Anthelmintics are central to parasite control in companion animals, but drug targets in helminths remain limited. Anthelmintic resistance is a clinically significant threat, with emerging multiple anthelmintic drug-resistant Ancylostoma caninum, macrocyclic lactone-resistant Dirofilaria immitis and praziquantel-resistant Dipylidium caninum. Each treatment is a selection event which eliminates susceptible parasites and enriches resistant survivors. Drug-resistant helminths often go undetected due to limited diagnostics and sole reliance on treatment. While some molecular tools can detect gene p

Lizards represent a diverse group, adapted to a wide variety of environments, and interact with a wide range of parasites. The composition of a parasitic community can be influenced by several factors, including the host, the environment, and the parasite itself. This study evaluated the composition of the helminth community in three species of lizards of the genera Ameiva, Ameivula, and Tropidurus, from a Carrasco habitat in Chapada do Araripe, Brazil. Carrasco is a little-explored environment in which the diversity of hosts and parasites is still poorly understood. The composition of the hel

Gonatodes humeralis is a small gecko common in the Amazon, and little is known about its parasite community. The present work assessed for the first time in detail the parasite community of G. humeralis in 2 conservation areas of the municipality of São Luís, State of Maranhão, Brazil, and the factors associated with it. A total of 132 lizards were collected. We found only 3 parasite taxa: the nematode Skrjabinelazia galliardi in the stomach, the digenean Mesocoelium sp., and the cestode Oochoristica sp., both in the small intestine. Skrjabinelazia galliardi was the most dominant, prevalent, a

Carbohydrate metabolism is a universal requirement for all life forms, with glycolysis providing a conserved pathway for energy production. Helminth parasites, including cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes, exhibit remarkable metabolic plasticity that enables survival within nutrient-limited, hypoxic, and immunologically hostile host environments. To adapt, these parasites rely heavily on carbohydrate metabolism, particularly glycolysis and associated anaerobic pathways such as malate dismutation, to sustain ATP generation across different life cycle stages. Infection often leads to the upregu

Helminthiases affect more than one billion people worldwide and remain tightly linked to environmental conditions, yet they are often underrepresented in discussions of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. As global temperatures rise and ecosystems shift, the life cycles, geographic distributions, and transmission dynamics of parasitic helminths are being reshaped in complex and sometimes contrasting ways. Here, we argue that helminthiases should be understood as ecological outcomes emerging from interactions among climatic drivers, environmental conditions, microbial communities, and host p

Enteroparasites were investigated in free-ranging Saguinus ursulus from the eastern Brazilian Amazon. Parasites were detected in 76.5% (13/17) of capture events, with Prosthenorchis sp. most frequently detected (58.8%; 10/17). Animals showed good body condition and no clinical abnormalities. This is the first report of Prosthenorchis sp. infection in S. ursulus.

The present paper comprises a systematic survey of trematodes and acanthocephalans based on helminthological examinations of 64 specimens of 14 species of freshwater fishes, belonging to six families of four fish orders, mostly from localities in Hubei Province, central China, collected in the autumn of 2002. A total of 15 trematode species (in 12 families) and 5 acanthocephalan species (in four families) was recorded. Almost all parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Some findings r

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) of soil-transmitted helminth parasites against the most widely available drugs is an ongoing concern for both human-infecting and livestock-infecting species. There has been substantial evidence of AR in livestock but less in humans, which may be due to a variety of reasons. In this paper, we develop an eco-evolutionary model that couples the life cycle of these parasites with their underlying evolution in a single biallelic genetic locus that confers resistance to treatment drugs. We determine the critical treatment frequency needed to effectively eliminate the po

BACKGROUND: Helminthiases are neglected diseases that affect billions of people worldwide, particularly those with inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene practices, and limited access to clean water. Due to frequent underreporting, wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as a valuable tool for monitoring parasitic infections at population-level. This study aimed to detect and quantify helminth eggs in untreated sewage sludge from eight wastewater treatment plants located in different Brazilian socioeconomic regions.
METHODS: The study was conducted from June 2021 to December 2023 in Goiás and

OBJECTIVES: Deworming programmes of soil-transmitted helminths are generally monitored and evaluated by aggregating drug coverage and infection levels at a district level. However, heterogeneity in drug coverage at finer spatial scales means indicators may remain above thresholds for elimination as a public health problem or of transmission in some areas. This paper aims to highlight the misleading information that aggregating data at larger spatial scales can have for programme decision making.
METHODS: Drug coverage data from the Geshiyaro project were compared at two spatial scales with re

PURPOSE: The infection of brown trout (Salmo trutta) by the acanthocephalan parasite Echinorhynchus truttae is initiated by the ingestion of gammarid crustaceans harbouring the cystacanth form. Gammarus pulex has been reported as the common intermediate host of this parasite species. The absence of G. pulex in the rivers of Spain suggests that native gammarid species may play the role of intermediate host for E. truttae, which is the only acanthocephalan species reported in salmonids in this country. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether native gammarid species of Galician ri

Ponto-Caspian gobies became highly abundant in many regions outside their native distribution range (e.g. in the Rhine River system). In the newly invaded habitats, the parasite communities of the invasive gobies are characterized by a lower species richness compared to their native range. Interestingly, acanthocephalans of the genus Pomphorhynchus are highly abundant, although they do not become mature and mostly remain encapsulated in the abdominal cavity as preadults. Thus, gobiids could either represent a dead-end host for Pomphorhynchus sp. declining its population (dilution effect) or ac

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are a parasitic infection that predominantly affects impoverished regions. Model-based geostatistics (MBG) has been established as a set of modern statistical methods that enable mapping of disease risk in a geographical area of interest. We investigate how the use of remotely sensed covariates can help to improve the predictive inferences on STH prevalence using MBG methods. In particular, we focus on how the covariates impact on the classification of areas into distinct class of STH prevalence.

School-based mass deworming programs are implemented to reduce soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection prevalence and intensity among school-aged children. However, previous studies debate the impact of deworming beyond the removal of worms. Hence, this study aimed to examine the effect of mass deworming on nutritional indicators in young Ethiopian schoolchildren. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,036 participants from April to May 2020 in Jimma Town, Ethiopia. An interviewer-based questionnaire was administered to the children to gather data on sociodemographic, lif

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the breasts in men, which is usually benign but can also manifest as a result of malignancies, and can be either unilateral or bilateral. Pseudogynecomastia is male breast enlargement due to excessive fat, while true gynecomastia is a proliferation of glandular tissue. Gynecomastia is common in infants, adolescents, and elderly men, with the most common cause is related to hormonal changes associated with aging. Medical intervention is usually required for true gynecomastia that has lasted more than a year. Here, we report a case of a 33-year-old Chinese-Indon

Helminth parasites of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus (n = 440), were surveyed in five localities, comprising woodland and grassland sites, in Southern England. Seven species of helminths were identified, among which Heligmosomoides polygyrus and Syphacia stroma were dominant (prevalence = 79.1% and 54.1%, respectively). Less common species were the trematode Corrigia vitta (14.8%), cestodes Catenotaenia pusilla (8.4%), Hydatigera taeniaeformis (4.1%) and Microsomacanthus crenata (3.4%) and the nematode Aonchotheca murissylvatici (0.2%). The release of cytokines from epithelial and stromal cells is critical for the initiation and maintenance of tissue immunity. Three such cytokines, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, IL-33, and IL-25, are important regulators of type 2 immune responses triggered by parasitic worms and allergens. In particular, these cytokines activate group 2 innate lymphoid cells, TH2 cells, and myeloid cells, which drive hallmarks of type 2 immunity. However, emerging data indicate that these tissue-associated cytokines are not only involved in canonical type 2 responses but are also important in the context of v

Mass drug administration (MDA), targeted at school-aged children (SAC) is recommended by the World Health Organization for the control of morbidity induced by soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection in endemic countries. However, MDA does not prevent reinfection between treatment rounds, and research suggests that only treating SAC will not be sufficient to interrupt transmission of STH. In countries with endemic infection, such as Ethiopia, the coverage, community-groups targeted, and rates of reinfection will determine how effective MDA is in suppressing transmission in the long-term.
