Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was demonstrated for 15 months in semen from a male homosexual with a recent history of a mononucleosis-like illness. The male urogenital tract can harbor CMV for long periods, and sexual transmission of the virus is more likely in persons with multiple heterosexual or homosexual contacts.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of current e-cigarette use among US college students by the intersection of sexual and gender minority (SGM) status and race/ethnicity.
PARTICIPANTS: A national sample (N = 176,064) of college students from Fall 2019 to Fall 2022.
METHODS: A multi-year cross-sectional data analysis of the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment III.
RESULTS: The prevalence of current e-cigarette use was higher among SGM students (22.0%) than cisgender heterosexuals (19.1%) (p < .001). Higher odds of current e-cigarette use we

Hostile sexism evokes women's resistance necessitating benevolent sexism to promote cross-gender cooperation. Addressing inconsistent, primarily self-report evidence for ambivalent sexism theory principles, we test the actor and partner effects of sexist attitudes on behaviors exhibited within heterosexual couples' interactions (N = 855 dyadic interactions). Showing that men's hostile sexism likely incites resistance, men's hostile sexism predicted more hostile and less responsive behavior by men and their women partners. Providing new behavioral evidence that benevolent sexism may promote het

Across five studies and one supplementary study (five preregistered; N = 3,215 adults), we found that men, more than women, avoided shared experiences (e.g., going to the movies, sharing food) with individuals of the same gender. Furthermore, persistent societal expectations that men should be unambiguously heterosexual underpinned this pattern: Men felt more apprehensive about signaling same-gender romance in platonic relationships than women did. In turn, romantic prototypicality drove the pattern of men (more than women) avoiding shared activities, above and beyond differences in how hedoni

PURPOSE: To examine differences in unstable housing and health-risk behaviors and experiences by sexual identity among U.S. high school students.
METHODS: Using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative survey of U.S. high school students, we calculated prevalence estimates and prevalence ratios of unstable housing by sexual identity (lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, and other-identifying [LGBQ+] vs. heterosexual). Among students experiencing unstable housing, we calculated prevalence estimates and prevalence ratios by sexual identity for substance use, vi

LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of sexual violence victimization than their heterosexual, cisgender counterparts. Emerging research suggests unique barriers to disclosure and help-seeking in the aftermath of sexual assault, but relatively little work has examined LGBTQIA+ identity-related concerns discussed in a help-seeking context. This study examined anonymous, archival data, from a sample of 292 visitors to the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline. Analyses were limited to visitors who identified as the victim of a sexual violence event, disclosed they identified as LGTBQIA+

OBJECTIVE: To predict trends in diagnosed HIV prevalence by extrapolation to 2004 using data from the annual surveys of individuals receiving HIV-related care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1996 to 2001.
METHODS: Data from the annual surveys of prevalent HIV infections diagnosed (SOPHID) were adjusted for under-reporting and non-attendance and separately extrapolated for infections acquired homosexually, heterosexually and by other routes. The data were extrapolated using negative binomial and linear regression models based on the 1996 to 2001 annual surveys.
RESULTS: The negati

The impact of crack cocaine use on number of sex partners was examined using bivariate analyses and a logistic model on a national treatment cohort of 4939 individuals. Number of sex partners over the last 12 months was dichotomized as none/one versus multiple partners for the logistic analyses. The model included 11 independent variables not including prostitution or use of crack cocaine. For both genders, the bivariate analyses showed significant positive associations between crack use and number of partners regardless of type of sexual activity; those who used crack had more partners for al

BACKGROUND: We describe the changing epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Tennessee to identify opportunities for improved response to the epidemic.
METHODS: Health department records of all new cases of HIV/AIDS in Tennessee from January 1992 through December 2001 were examined. Cases were defined according to CDC criteria and classified as HIV or AIDS based on diagnosis in the initial report.
RESULTS: During the ten-year study period, 14,278 new cases were reported; 67% were HIV and 33% were AIDS. Incidence in males was three times higher than females. The rate among blacks was seven times higher t

satori (sat) is a Drosophila mutant in which male sexual orientation changes from heterosexual to homosexual. Another phenotype of the satori mutant is the absence of the male-specific muscle of Lawrence (MOL). The formation of MOL is repressed in females by the action of a female-determinant protein. Transformer (Tra), while a Tra-target doublesex (dsx) has no role in the MOL formation. Molecular cloning of the fruitless (fru) gene responsible for the sat mutation revealed that it encodes a putative transcription factor with a BTB domain and Zn finger motifs, and that the second exon of this

The percentage of gonococcal isolates in King County, Washington, requiring citrulline and uracil (CU auxotype) increased from 1.6% in 1986 to 16.5% in 1997. Among men, urethral infection with the CU auxotype (n=93), in comparison with infection by other auxotypes (n=1211), was associated with coexisting chlamydial infection, younger age, heterosexual contact, and fewer new recent partners (P<. 05). Among heterosexual men, urethral infection with the CU auxotype, compared with infection with other auxotypes, less often produced symptoms of urethral discharge (75% vs. 92%) or dysuria (47% vs. 7

From June 1981 through December 1991, 34% of all reported cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among women in the United States were attributed to heterosexual transmission, and that proportion has been increasing steadily (1). Factors associated with an increased risk for heterosexual transmission include unprotected sexual intercourse (2), multiple sex partners, and the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) (1). Women who have been surgically sterilized and who are sexually active and/or use injecting drugs may need the same prevention services for human immuno

Fulminant hepatitis occurs in only 1% of acute hepatitis B patients, requiring hospitalization, but coinfection with delta virus increases the incidence. Hepatitis B and D infection are commonly associated with intravenous drug abuse, but there have been no previous reports of an association with nonparenteral cocaine. Crack use, via sexual promiscuity, is associated with an increased risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection, but has never been associated with viral hepatitis. We report four fatal cases of fulminant hepatitis B including, one with delta virus coinfection and one with hu

Among 115 heterosexual men who presented with genital ulcers to a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Nairobi, Kenya, the prevalence of serum antibody to HIV was 16.5%. A past history of genital ulcers was reported by 12 (63%) of 19 men with antibody to HIV versus 30 (31%) of 96 without antibody (P = 0.008). HIV infection was also positively associated with lack of circumcision, but was not associated with the etiology of the current genital ulcer. Logistic regression analysis (adjusted for age, number of recent sex partners, recent prostitute contact, circumcision, tribal ethnic identity,

Twenty-eight patients with recent onset of nonvesicular ulcerative genital lesions were studied prospectively to define the microbial etiology. Causative agents identified included herpes simplex virus (HSV), Chlamydia trachomatis, Haemophilus ducreyi, and Treponema pallidum. Three women and 25 men (seven of whom were homosexual) were studied. Ten patients did not have an etiology identified. Nine patients had syphilis, six had genital herpes, one had chancroid, one had granuloma inguinale, and one had a human bite injury. Six of seven homosexual men had syphilis, as compared with one of eight

Gonorrhoea cases increased steeply in women aged 20 to 24 years across 15 EU/EEA countries in July to December 2022 and January to June 2023 with, respectively, 73% and 89% more cases reported than expected, based on historical data from 2015 to 2019. Smaller increases among men due to heterosexual transmission were observed in nine EU/EEA countries. Interventions to raise awareness among young people about sexually transmitted infection risks are needed, emphasising the benefit of safe sexual practices and testing.

INTRODUCTION: Condomless anal intercourse (AI) confers a far greater likelihood of HIV transmission than condomless vaginal intercourse (VI). However, little is known about AI practice over the life course of women, to what extent AI practice is condom-protected, and whether it is associated with other HIV risk behaviors. We aim to describe longitudinal AI practice among HIV-seronegative women and to identify subgroups with distinct trajectories of AI practice.
METHODS: Using data from the Women's Interagency HIV Study, an observational cohort of US women with or at risk for HIV, we described

Few studies have quantified burdens and psychological impacts of physical violence victimization among sexual minority adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Central and South America-where AYAs experience among the highest rates of violence victimization globally. Accordingly, data from two population-based household surveys implemented in Colombia and Honduras between 2017 and 2018 were pooled to characterize disparities and mental health sequelae of physical violence victimization among AYAs aged 13 to 24 years by sexual minority status. Framed by minority stress theory, sex-stratified weig

BACKGROUND: Research showing that sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are at increased risk of substance use and mental health symptoms have insufficiently accounted for SGM identity diversity. This study examined differences in substance use and mental health symptoms among young adults with diverse sexual (heterosexual, lesbian/gay, asexual, bisexual, pansexual, and queer) and gender (cisgender, transgender, and on-binary) identities.
METHODS: Five longitudinal survey waves (2019-2023) of young adults (n = 2724; mean age = 21.7) from Southern California were used to estimate time-
