We report a case of intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with hemolytic anemia. While the paravertebral localization of the lesions demonstrated on CT and MRI was suspicious of intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis, In-111 chloride and Tc-99m Sn colloid bone marrow scintigraphies showing a bone marrow element of the lesion were useful to confirm the diagnosis.

UNLABELLED: Cholecystokinin (CCK)-B receptors have been demonstrated on a high percentage of medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTC) in vitro. Carcinoid tumors and endocrine pancreatic tumors often express somatostatin receptors (sst). Tumor spread may be visualized by sst scintigraphy using [(111)In-DTPA-D-Phe1]-octreotide. Between 1972 and 1985, 107 patients with chronic Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura underwent splenectomy. Platelet life span and sites of sequestration were studied with labelled platelets and external scanning. Medical treatment was always of scarce and transient effectiveness and had considerable side effects. Splenectomy had minimal complications and mortality and caused no hazard of overwhelming sepsis in adults. The murine 96.5 monoclonal antimelanoma antibody (MoAb) was labeled with In-111, and 1-20 mg were administered to 21 patients who had proved or suspected melanoma metastases. A case of lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) extravasation with an unsuspected traumatic meningocele after a gunshot wound was detected by means of retrograde myeloscintography using isobaric In-111-DTPA. In this report, we present a novel one-pot synthesis of Cu-In-S/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in buffer solution as a facile route to biocompatible nanoscale imaging probes, with emission wavelengths as far as 675 nm in the biologically important near-infrared spectral region and quantum yields of up to 16%. Whilst a simple route, our method produced particles that displayed exceptionally high cell viability with facile applications in in vivo imaging, highlighting the potential of these QDs as advanced imaging probes.
