Development and validation of a nomogram for spontaneous closure of duodenal fistulas after infection control in septic patients.

BACKGROUND: In septic patients, the rate of spontaneous closure is lower than in non-infected patients. Few studies have focused on predicting spontaneous closure after sepsis control, which is crucial for guiding treatment decisions such as surgery or observation. This study developed and validated a nomogram to predict the likelihood of spontaneous closure in external duodenal fistulas after infection control in septic patients. METHODS: Between January 2004 and October 2024, patients from centers A and B were included in the development cohort, while those from centers C and D constituted …

Inorganic materials to prevent liquefactive necrosis and improve wound healing: A role of infection control across ischemic models.

Liquefactive necrosis, clinically manifesting as wet gangrene, is a catastrophic complication of ischemic wounds driven by bacterial overgrowth, proteolytic tissue lysis, and loss of structural integrity; current treatments remain largely limited to surgical debridement or amputation. Here, we show that inorganic biomaterial films releasing hydroxide ions, with or without oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, can markedly inhibit the development and spread of liquefactive necrosis in ischemic skin and cartilage. A calcium peroxide (CaO2) loaded film in alginate hydrogel was evaluated in ischemic rat d

Impact of Malaria Infection on the Diagnostic Performance of Adipsin for Preeclampsia in Pregnancy: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and preeclampsia are major pregnancy-related complications that share overlapping complement and inflammation-mediated pathways. Although adipsin has been proposed as a diagnostic biomarker for preeclampsia, its diagnostic performance in the context of concurrent malaria infection remains poorly understood. This study investigated the impact of malaria infection on plasma adipsin levels and evaluated its diagnostic performance for preeclampsia. METHODS: This case-control study included 200 pregnant women between 20 and 42 weeks of gestation, stratified into four groups: no

Vitamin D3 contribution to systemic and local control of Salmonella Typhimurium infection in an in vivo mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D serves as a critical modulator of innate and adaptive immune responses. Its active metabolite, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), exhibits potent antimicrobial activity in both humans and mice, positioning it as a promising adjunctive or alternative therapeutic for infectious diseases through immune modulation and clearance of pathogens. Among these, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, a leading cause of foodborne zoonotic infections, presents significant global public health burdens. METHODS: Employing an in vivo murine model, we recapitulated the systemic a

Active surveillance pharmacovigilance for Clostridioides difficile infection and gastrointestinal bleeding: an analytic framework based on case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Active surveillance pharmacovigilance is an emerging approach to identify medications with unanticipated effects. We previously developed a framework called pharmacopeia-wide association studies (PharmWAS) that limits false positive medication associations through high-dimensional confounding adjustment and set enrichment. We aimed to assess the transportability and generalizability of the PharmWAS framework by using medical claims data to reproduce known medication associations with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) or gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). METHODS: We conducted

Evaluation of the Expression of Infection-Related Long Noncoding RNAs among COVID-19 Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a worldwide pandemic, activates signaling cascades and leads to innate immune responses and secretion of multiple chemokines and cytokines. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a crucial role in inflammatory pathways. Through our search on the PubMed database, we discovered that existing research has primarily focused on examining the regulatory impacts of five lncRNAs in the context of viral infections. However, their role in regulating other conditions, including SARS-CoV-2, has not been explored. Therefore, thi
