Association between nonsuicidal self-injury and borderline personality features in early-adolescent students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a disabling mental health condition marked by affective, cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal instability. Borderline personality features (BPF) often emerge during adolescence and can predict later BPD. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) - the deliberate, direct infliction of tissue damage without suicidal intent - has shown a strong association with BPF. This study examined the relationship between NSSI and BPF in early-adolescent students. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey, 244 first-cycle high-school students in Urmia, Iran, were

Large language models show high clinical safety but differences in completeness for reproductive counselling in women with inflammatory rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases: a comparative expert evaluation.

Specialized pregnancy counselling improves maternal and infant outcomes in women with inflammatory rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (iRMDs). As such services are not universally available, large language models (LLMs) may increasingly serve as an accessible source of information for patients seeking guidance on family planning, pregnancy, and lactation. This highlights the need to evaluate this software in terms of their adequacy, accuracy and overall reliability. The aim of the analysis is to evaluate the possibility of using LLMs as reliable sources of information regarding female pati

Treatment of culturally diverse children and adolescents with depression.

This article is written for the practitioners treating depression in ethnic minority youth. It will review the context in which services are delivered to these youth: Researchers have recognized persistent ethnic differences in terms of utilization of services and unmet need. Furthermore, when ethnic minority youth do receive pediatric mental health care, the services that they receive may differ from those given to White patients. The reasons for these discrepancies have been examined in numerous studies, and have included contextual variables (economics, availability, and accessibility of se

Youth Involvement in Family Drinking and Parental Permission to Sip/Taste Alcohol: A Test of an Early Risk Pathway to Perceived Parental Approval of Underage Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Several alcohol-specific parenting behaviors are associated with adolescent alcohol use. An important next step in the literature is integrating these behaviors into unified risk pathways, which have the potential to inform preventive interventions and public health messaging. Youth involvement in family drinking (i.e., asking children to fetch, pour, and open drinks) reflects parental-approved contact with alcohol, which may present the opportunity for sipping/tasting alcohol with parental permission. In turn, sipping/tasting alcohol with parental permission may increase adolescen

Social Media Use and HIV-Related Risk Behaviors in Young Black and Latino Gay and Bi Men and Transgender Individuals in New York City: Implications for Online Interventions.

Urban young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and transgender women continue to experience high rates of new HIV infections in the USA, yet most of this population is not reached by current prevention interventions. The rate of Internet and social media use among youth is high. However, continually updated understanding of the associations between social media access and use and HIV risk behaviors is needed to reach and tailor technology-delivered interventions for those most vulnerable to HIV-racially and ethnically diverse urban YMSM and transgender persons. Thus, we conducted an in-person, v

Prescription medication borrowing among adult patients at an urban medical center.

Prescription medication borrowing can result in adverse health outcomes. We aimed to study the patterns of borrowing prescription medications in an adult urban population seeking healthcare in the outpatient, emergency, and inpatient units of an urban medical center. Participants indicated whether they (1) had a primary care doctor, medical insurance, a prior history of substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, or chronic pain; and (2) had borrowed a prescription medication. If so, they noted the medication obtained, source, frequency of use, and reasons why they had not obtained a prescription

Examining Weight Suppression, Leptin Levels, Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Response, and Reward-Related Constructs in Severity and Maintenance of Bulimic Syndromes: Protocol and Sample Characteristics for a Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa and related syndromes (BN-S) characterized by binge eating vary considerably in illness severity and course. Using the Research Domain Criteria framework of the National Institute of Mental Health, we developed a model positing that the same set of physiological consequences of weight suppression (WS; defined as the difference between the highest and current adult body weight) contribute to binge-eating severity and maintenance by (1) increasing the drive or motivation to consume food (reward valuation effort [RVE]) and (2) decreasing the ability for food consumptio

The feasibility and acceptability of implementing simplified cognitive behavioral therapy approaches to support postpartum mental health and address associated social and behavioral barriers to postpartum family planning in Amhara, Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health can negatively impact health outcomes across diverse health areas, including in the first year postpartum. Yet, the intersection of postpartum mental health and postpartum family planning (FP) is understudied. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based practice that has proven helpful for improving mental health and supporting positive behavior change across health areas, including in low-resource settings. Drawing on existing CBT tools, we created and piloted an intervention called Mothers Time, designed to be delivered in three sessions by a commun

Investigating Suicide Risk Factors Among Appalachian West Virginian Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide rates in the United States have increased over the past two decades, with rural areas, particularly the Appalachian Region, facing unique challenges that elevate suicide risk. These include economic hardships, social isolation, and limited access to mental health services. PURPOSE: This study addresses critical gaps in understanding lifetime suicide risk in West Virginia (WV), a predominantly rural state entirely within the Appalachian Region. By identifying the factors driving urban-rural differences in suicide risk, this research seeks to inform interventions tailored

Predictive factors associated with sexual activity and consistent condom use during travel abroad: a cross-sectional survey of young Canadian adults.

BACKGROUND: For young adults seeking new experiences, international travel provides opportunities for casual sexual encounters. The aim of this study was to identify the predictive factors associated with travel-associated sex and consistent condom use in a non-random sample of single and partnered young travelers. METHODS: Sexually-active Canadians, aged 18-25 years, who traveled abroad in 2016, were purposively recruited to participate in an online survey. Two binomial logistic regressions were performed to examine the demographic, sexual health and lifestyle factors associated with (1) hav

Reported Low Uptake of HCV Testing among People Who Inject Drugs in Urban Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: HCV testing is an important first step for treatment and prevention, particularly for those who are highly vulnerable to HCV infection such as people who inject drugs (PWID). In settings where direct-acting antiretroviral medicines are becoming more available, limited information exists about who and where to target to increase the prevalence of HCV testing among PWID. This study is aimed at understanding the prevalence of HCV testing uptake and its determinants of medical services and risk behaviors. METHODS: From February 2016 to April 2017, a sample of 509 PWID was interviewed

Sexual and Reproductive Health Indicators and Intimate Partner Violence Victimization Among Female Family Planning Clinic Patients Who Have Sex with Women and Men.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women are more likely than heterosexual women to have ever experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Although IPV is associated with sexual risk and poor reproductive health outcomes among US women overall, little is known about whether IPV is related to sexual and reproductive health indicators among sexual minority women in particular. METHODS: Baseline data from a prospective intervention trial were collected from women ages 16-29 years at 24 family planning clinics in western PA (n=3,455). Multivariable logistic regression for clustered survey data was used

The Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale fails to discriminate pain or anxiety in a chronic disabling occupational musculoskeletal disorder population.

BACKGROUND: The Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS) was developed to measure fear and anxiety responses to pain. Many studies have found associations between PASS scores and self-report measures of pain, anxiety, and disability as well as among inhibited movement patterns and activity avoidance behaviors (eg, kinesophobia). This study aimed to identify clinically meaningful cut-off points to identify high or low levels of pain anxiety and to determine if the PASS provides additional useful information in a functional restoration (FR) treatment program for chronic disabling occupational musculos

Comparison of risk behaviors and socio-cultural profile of men who have sex with men survey respondents recruited via venues and the internet.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly more men who have sex with men (MSM) are using the internet to seek sex partners, and many HIV-related studies targeting MSM collect data from gay venues in order to inform the design of prevention programs. However, internet-based MSM may have different HIV risk behaviors and associated factors from those attending venues. This study examined differences in risk behaviors and socio-cultural profiles between MSM recruited from venues (e.g., gay bars/saunas) and from the internet respectively. METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted. A total of 566 C

A longitudinal study of the relative importance of factors related to use of dental services among young adults.

BACKGROUND: The decline in the appropriate use of dental services from childhood to adulthood is of concern. The relative importance of factors influencing use of dental services in young adulthood should inform strategies to address this issue. AIM: To develop models predictive of inadequate utilisation of dental care in young adults and to determine the relative importance of health behaviours, need for dental care, and socio-demographic factors. Inadequate utilisation of dental care was determined as lack of visit for dental care during the study period and as problem-based care-seeking be
