Feasibility of referral to a therapist for assessment of psychiatric problems in primary care - an interview study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety disorders are common in primary care. Comorbidities are frequent, and the diagnoses can be difficult. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) can be a support in the clinical examination of patients with complex problems. However, for family practitioners (FPs), time and perceptions about structured interviews can be barriers to the MINI. An inter-professional teamwork process where FPs refer a patient to a therapist for a MINI assessment represents one way in which to address the problem. The results are fed back to the FPs for diagnosis and

Specific Depressive Symptoms and Primary Tumor Location as Potential Predictors of Smoking Maintenance After Head and Neck Cancer Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Despite the known benefits of smoking cessation for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, a significant proportion continue to use tobacco after treatment. Although the causes of this phenomenon are multifactorial, the underlying psychological mechanisms are still poorly understood. AIM: Investigate the influence of sociodemographic, clinicopathological, and psychological factors on smoking cessation after treatment of HNC. METHODS: This study included 71 smoking HNC patients who had completed cancer treatment for at least 12 months. Clinicopathological characteristics and anxiety

Beyond Clinical Predictors: Determining the Impact of Psychosocial Factors in Chronic Pain After Spinal Cord Injury.

UNLABELLED: Although chronic pain is common after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and prognostic models have traditionally prioritized clinical injury characteristics, the relative contribution of sociodemographic and psychological factors remains undercharacterized. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a national longitudinal cohort from United States inpatient rehabilitation centers participating in the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems. Adults with traumatic SCI (N=1303) completed Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems Form 1 and a 1-year follow-up Form 2 interview. Pain intensity at 1 year was asse

Mental health of caregivers for people with dementia and cerebral palsy as a key determinant of caregiver burden: a multivariable analysis.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregiving plays a vital role in supporting dependent individuals; however, prolonged caregiving is associated with significant physical and psychological strain. Understanding factors associated with caregiver burden is essential for designing effective interventions to protect caregiver health and sustain long-term care systems. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between psychological, physical, and contextual factors on caregiver burden and to identify variables independently associated with caregiver burden. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 73

The role of financial difficulty on the health and well-being of adults with functional limitations that may require long-term services and supports.

Access to Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) is a big concern for many older adults and adults with disabilities who strive to live independently at home. People who have functional limitations that hinder completion of essential day-to-day activities are especially vulnerable to financial difficulty, which may further jeopardize their health and well-being. Using Pearlin's Stress Process Model, this study aims to understand how cumulative financial difficulties proliferate health and well-being among adults who are experiencing various types of functional limitations. This study used the

Sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease, an early and multiple problem.

In Parkinson's disease (PD), it remains unclear whether sleep disorders including insomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), are isolated or combined, interact with each other and are associated with clinical factors. We sought to determine the prevalence and combinations of the main sleep disorders, and their clinical and polysomnographic associations in early stage PD. Sleep disorders were systematically diagnosed after medical interview and video-polysomnography in 162 participants with

A Positive Psychology Intervention for Patients with an Acute Coronary Syndrome: Treatment Development and Proof-of-Concept Trial.

Positive psychological constructs are associated with superior outcomes in cardiac patients, but there has been minimal study of positive psychology (PP) interventions in this population. Our objective was to describe the intervention development and pilot testing of an 8-week phone-based PP intervention for patients following an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Initial intervention development and single-arm proof-of-concept trial, plus comparison of the PP intervention to a subsequently-recruited treatment as usual (TAU) cohort. PP development utilized existing literature, expert input, and qu

War’s long shadow: masculinity, medicine, and the gendered politics of trauma, 1914-1939.

War is an inherently traumatizing experience, and during the First World War more than 15,000 Canadian soldiers were diagnosed with some form of war-related psychological wounds. Many more went unrecognized. Yet the very act of seeking an escape from the battlefield or applying for a postwar pension for psychological traumas transgressed masculine norms that required men to be aggressive, self-reliant, and un-emotional. Using newly available archival records, contemporary medical periodicals, doctors' notes, and patient interview transcripts, this paper examines two crises that arose from this

Screening for mental disorders in cardiology outpatients.

The objective of the study was to compare the frequency of mental disorders in cardiology outpatients to the number of patients with psychological problems identified by cardiologists. In a cardiology outpatient service, 103 consecutive patients were asked to participate in the study. Of these 86 were included and screened for mental disorder with the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD), Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) psychosis screening, the Clock Drawing Test, and the WHO-5 Well-being Index. The cardiologists were asked to rate the severity of somatic and

Psychological functioning among members of a small polar expedition.

BACKGROUND: While depressed mood, insomnia, irritability and impaired cognition represent common responses to the physical and psychosocial stressors associated with polar environments, wide variations exist in their expression and the degree to which they adversely affect the health and performance of polar expeditioners. In particular, the process of successful adaptation to polar environments and the psychosocial characteristics associated with this process remains poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: Psychosocial characteristics associated with successful coping with typical stressors are also

Psychological Distress, Caregiver Burden and Quality of Life Among Informal Carers of First Nations Australians Diagnosed With Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

IntroductionInformal carers provide essential support for people diagnosed with cancer, however, the demands of caregiving can negatively impact their psychological wellbeing. There is a need to examine psychological wellbeing among carers of First Nations cancer patients to understand the impacts of caregiving within cultural contexts. Therefore, this study aims to quantify carer psychological distress, burden, and quality of life (QoL) among carers of First Nations Australian cancer patients - key indicators of carer wellbeing that may have implications for both carers and patients.MethodsTh

Longitudinal assessment of psychological distress and its determinants in a sample of firefighters based in Montreal, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters face elevated risks of common mental health issues, with distress rates estimated at around 30%, surpassing those of many other occupational groups. While exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is a well-recognized risk factor, existing research acknowledges the need for a broader perspective encompassing multidimensional factors within the realm of occupational stress. Furthermore, this body of evidence heavily relies on cross-sectional studies. This study adopts an intensive longitudinal approach to assess psychological distress and its determinants among

Diminished Health Returns of Educational Attainment Among Immigrant Adults in the United States.

Objectives: Marginalization-related diminished returns (MDRs) refer to weaker health effects of educational attainment for socially marginalized groups compared to the socially privileged groups. Most of the existing literature on MDRs, however, has focused on marginalization due to race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Thus, very limited information exists on MDRs of educational attainment among immigrant populations in the United States. Aims: Building on the MDRs framework and using a nationally representative sample of US adults, we compared immigrant and native-born adults for the effe

The Four Es 1-year later: a tool for predicting the development of gambling problems.

The Four Es is a 40-item scale measuring psychological risk for the development of problem gambling behavior. One-year follow-up interviews (n = 395) from a previously reported phone survey in Queensland, Australia (n = 2,577) (Rockloff & Dyer, 2006) tested the ability of the Four Es instrument to prospectively identify persons who would later develop gambling problems. Two groups of participants were selected for the 1-year follow-up interviews, including (1) persons who had gambling problems, high-risk alcohol abuse problems, and/or substance abuse problems (abuse group); and (2) a random se
