Microhamartomatous rectal polyps are described in 11 out of 15 patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS). These readily identifiable polyps are of no clinical significance but their prevalence and unique nature rank them as of equal importance to other better known markers of TS such as the facial angiofibromata (adenoma sebaceum).

In a series of 124 consecutive Dutch patients the clinical and morphological features of 166 endoscopically removed colorectal adenomatous polyps were reviewed. The most frequent clinical symptom was manifest blood loss with the stools (51%), but no specific adenoma symptom seemed to exist. A 49-year-old woman with Gardner's syndrome, who underwent total proctocolectomy in 1982, was found to have a cancer of the duodenal bulb. Haemostasis by endoscopic injection was attempted in 169 patients with acute gastrointestinal haemorrhage between 1976 and 1982. Despite various caused initial haemostasis in the upper and lower digestive tract was achieved in 95%. Recurrences were seen in 10%. Definitive haemostasis thus was 85%. A case of polyposis coli preceded by hepatocellular carcinoma and epidermoid cysts is described. Only one other documented case of hepatoma in association with polyposis coli has been reported in the literature. This patient is not only the youngest to develop an extracolonic malignancy, but has also been fortunate to survive a disease often considered fatal. The possibility of a polyposis-linked resistance to extracolonic malignancies is discussed.

An unusual case of familial polyposis coli has been reported in which polypoid lesions of the stomach and the ileum were found in association to the adenomatosis coli. The histological examination showed that these lesions were not adenomatous polyps, as supposed by the radiographs, but non-inflammatory cysts located within the intact fundal glands of the stomach, and lymphoid polyps ("lymphcysts") of the ileum. Senescence marker protein 30 (SMP30) is a calcium-binding protein whose expression decreases during senescence. SMP30 deficiency increases susceptibility to cytokine-induced apoptosis in the liver and to radiation-induced apoptosis in the small intestine. The Fujinon intelligent color enhancement (FICE) system is a new, virtual chromoendoscopy technique that enhances mucosal visibility. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) with FICE technology (EPX-4400 processor, Japan) for the characterization of various small-bowel diseases. INTRODUCTION: Malignant tumours of the small bowel are uncommon in clinical practice. Adenocarcinoma is the most common of these tumours, accounting for approximately 35-45% of all tumours. It may occur sporadically, in association with familial adenomatous polyposis coli or Peutz-Jeghers syndrome or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer, or in association with chronic inflammatory bowel changes (such as Crohn's disease or celiac disease).

Endometriosis of the intestinal tract may mimic a number of diseases both clinically and pathologically. The authors evaluated 44 cases of intestinal endometriosis in which endometriosis was the primary pathologic diagnosis, and evaluated them for a variety of gross and histologic changes.
