A novel route for saving cooperation on dynamical networks: Enhancing rationality.

Cooperation is crucial for all levels of living systems. The last two decades have seen progress in revealing the mechanisms for cooperation in structured populations. Most of those analytical works have an explicit assumption, i.e., weak rationality or high temperature in statistical physical terms. It is still far from known how rationality alters the fate of cooperation, although simulation results have provided some intuitions. To be specific, the analytical insight is still lacking under what conditions cooperation can still be promoted, given that it cannot be favored by weak rationality…

Strain-localized luminescent e-skin for high-resolution pressure mapping and visual force feedback.

Electronic skins (e-skins) that emulate human intuitive tactile perception with visual feedback capabilities are vital for next-generation wearables, robotics, and biomedical applications. However, existing visualized pressure mapping systems either require dense pixelated arrays that add bulk, complexity and signal crosstalk, or rely on rigid or semi‑rigid architecture,  and are not able to conform to dynamically changing curved, soft surfaces. Here, we report a soft mechano-electroluminescent e-skin for high-resolution visualized pressure mapping. Quantitative pressure sensing is achieved on

Enhanced bacterial chemotaxis in confined microchannels occurs at lane widths matching circular swimming radius.

Understanding bacterial behavior in confined environments is helpful for elucidating microbial ecology and developing strategies to manage bacterial infections. While extensive research has focused on bacterial motility on surfaces and in porous media, chemotaxis in confined spaces remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the chemotaxis of Escherichia coli within microfluidic lanes under a linear concentration gradient of L-aspartate. We demonstrate that E. coli exhibits significantly enhanced chemotaxis in lanes with sidewalls compared to open surfaces. We attribute this phenomenon pri

IntentionAR: An Intention-Driven Camera-Projector System for AR Assembly Guidance.

Augmented reality (AR) assembly guidance systems can help users quickly master the assembly process of unfamiliar objects. However, it is very difficult for practical use without a thorough understanding of users' intentions. Furthermore, existing approaches still struggle to handle complex hand-part interactions and nonlinear assembly steps, and achieving intuitive and real-time guidance remains challenging. To address these issues, we propose an intention-driven camera-projector AR assembly guidance system (IntentionAR) that integrates online user intention inference with a finite-state asse

Mapping alkaloids with mass spectrometry imaging: Application of spatial distribution in medicinal plants and animal tissues.

Alkaloids, as natural bioactive compounds, exhibit significant pharmacological activities and broad applications, holding considerable research value in botany, drug metabolism, and toxicology. In the field of mass spectrometry detection, alkaloids are extensively studied due to their favorable response in positive ion mode. As a mature and rapidly evolving molecular imaging technology, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) can intuitively visualize the spatial distribution of alkaloids in tissues without the need for labeling. Currently, the most commonly used MSI techniques for alkaloids include s

Colorimetric sensing array based on Fe single-atom nanozyme for ultrasensitively discriminating organophosphorus pesticides.

BACKGROUND: Pesticide residue monitoring is of vital importance in ensuring food safety and promoting public health. In contrast to traditional approaches, colorimetric sensor arrays enable rapid, intuitive, and cost-effective simultaneous detection of multi-pesticides. RESULTS: In this study, we constructed a three-channel colorimetric sensor array based on the catalytic oxidation of various substrates mediated by a synthesized Fe-N/C single-atom nanozyme (Fe-N/C SAN). Distinct color responses and fingerprint-like patterns were generated for six organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), as each pes

Visual prompt engineering for multimodal and irregularly sampled medical data.

BACKGROUND: A patient undergoes multiple examinations in each hospital stay, where each provides different facets of the health status. These assessments include temporal data with varying sampling rates, discrete single-point measurements, therapeutic interventions such as medication administration, and images. While physicians are able to process and integrate diverse modalities intuitively, neural networks need specific modeling for each modality complicating the training procedure. METHODS: We demonstrate that this complexity can be significantly reduced by visualizing all information as

Solubilization of PET in binary mixtures of HFIP and DCM.

The dissolution of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a critical step for a solvent-based process, yet it typically requires highly corrosive or toxic solvents. Here, we investigate the solubilization and conformational behavior of PET in binary mixtures of hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and dichloromethane (DCM) as a strategy to reduce HFIP usage while maintaining effective dissolution. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements reveal that PET remains molecularly dissolved in HFIP/DCM mixtures up to 50 vol% DCM. Analysis of PET chain conformations shows a transition from Gaussian beha

Reorienting with the Bare Hand: Gesture-Based Techniques for Orientation-Enabled Teleportation in Virtual Reality.

Teleportation is a widely adopted locomotion technique in virtual reality (VR), with reorientation commonly integrated into commercial systems to reduce physical turning and improve navigational control. However, research on reorientation-enabled teleportation has received limited attention and still lacks clear design guidance, resulting in longer interaction times, greater complexity, and higher mental workload. To bridge this gap, we revisit reorientation-enabled teleportation through bare-hand interaction, a natural and device-free modality that is now increasingly supported and widely ado

The concept of functional cure in advanced/metastatic melanoma treated with combined nivolumab and ipilimumab or nivolumab alone.

BACKGROUND: Immune-Checkpoint-Inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly improved the course of advanced/metastatic melanoma and the concept of ICIs curative potential began to appear. To use statistical approaches to determine whether advanced/metastatic melanoma patients treated with nivolumab alone or in combination with ipilimumab may be considered as functionally cured. METHODS: Individual patient data were reconstructed from published Kaplan-Meier curves of the anti-PD1 arms of the Checkmate-067. The assumption of functional cure was assessed using three approaches based on a flexible-paramet

BACKGROUND: Albinism, a group of rare genetic conditions characterized by visual impairment and variable hypopigmentation, is extensively studied in biomedical research. However, the psychosocial aspects, particularly in France, remain under-investigated, contributing to the invisibility of this sensory disability. OBJECTIVES: The ALBIPSY project aimed to explore the lived experience of persons with albinism (PWAs) and their significant others (SOs), and to examine the role of dyadic adjustment in maintaining their quality of life. METHODS AND SETTINGS: This study employed a sequential mixed

Observation-related activity in the human motor cortex increases with effector anthropomorphicity.

Neurons in the motor cortex can be engaged not only in motor execution but also during observation of movements performed by other anthropomorphic agents (i.e., humans or monkeys). However, it is unknown how motor cortical neurons respond during observation of the range of assistive or prosthetic devices controlled by people using intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs). We recorded single-unit activity in the precentral gyrus while iBCI users viewed grasp-like movements performed by a spectrum of virtual effectors that included human, robotic, and hand-like dot stimuli. We found a rel

Extended depth-of-focus liquid-crystal-based lens with deterministic forward design based on frozen-wave synthesis.

An extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) lens is essential for overcoming the limited axial response of conventional optical systems, where high-quality imaging is confined to a narrow depth range. However, existing optimized approaches based on phase engineering or inverse design often suffer from limited physical interpretability and restricted control over the axial response. Here, we propose a forward-designed EDOF strategy based on the frozen-wave framework, in which the axial intensity distribution is directly prescribed through the coherent superposition of Bessel beams with different cone ang

Combined Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery and Transcervical Approach for Substernal Thyroidectomy: A Sternotomy Sparing Technique.

Significant extension of thyroid masses into the mediastinum has historically necessitated high-morbidity sternotomy or thoracotomy incisions during substernal thyroidectomy. This preliminary experience from a single-center, tertiary-care academic institution illustrates a combined minimally invasive robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) and transcervical approach for substernal thyroidectomy. Patients are considered for the minimally invasive approach for substantial goiter extension into the anterior and posterior mediastinum, in addition to risk factors for wound healing complications as

Enhancing Human Navigation Ability Using Force-Feedback From a Lower-Limb Exoskeleton.

Humans operating in dynamic environments with limited visibility are susceptible to collisions with moving objects, occupational hazards, and/or other agents, which can result in personal injuries or fatalities. Most existing research has focused on using vibrotactile cues to address this challenge. In this work, we propose a fundamentally new approach that utilizes variable impedance on an active exoskeleton to guide humans away from hazards and towards safe areas. This framework combines artificial potential fields with current impedance-based theories of exoskeleton control to provide a com

EAMAPG: Explainable Adversarial Model Analysis via Projected Gradient Descent.

Despite the outstanding performance of deep learning (DL) models, their interpretability remains a challenging topic. In this study, we address the transparency of DL models in medical image analysis by introducing a novel interpretability method using projected gradient descent (PGD) to generate adversarial examples. We use adversarial generation to analyze images. By introducing perturbations that cause misclassification, we identify key features influencing the model decisions. This method is tested on Brain Tumor, Eye Disease, and COVID-19 datasets using six common convolutional neural net
