BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia and distorted fatty acid (FA) metabolism are frequent biochemical abnormalities associated with anorexia nervosa (AN). Gut microbiota is supposed to play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of AN. Apart from the digestive function of bile acids (BAs), these compounds have multiple metabolic functions due to the activation of specific receptors.
OBJECTIVE/AIMS: The aims of the study were to investigate biochemical measures, including plasma lipids (lipoproteins, respectively), fatty acid (FA) patterns, and the profile of plasma Bas, in AN patients and healthy con

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder predominantly caused by Cutibacterium acnes and its virulence-associated CAMP (Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen) factors, particularly CAMP1 and CAMP2, which contribute to inflammation and bacterial survival. With increasing antibiotic resistance and concerns over microbiome disruption from conventional treatments, probiotic-derived postbiotics present a promising alternative. This study aimed to investigate the anti-acne potential of fatty acids produced by Pediococcus acidilactici BCBH1, targeting CAMP1 and CAMP2 proteins of C. acnes using

The effect of Sargassum polycystum crude extract on lipid metabolism was examined against acetaminophen-induced (800 mg/kg body wt., intraperitoneally) hyperlipidemia during toxic hepatitis in experimental rats. The animals intoxicated with acetaminophen showed significant elevation in the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and free fatty acid in both serum and liver tissue. The levels of tissue total lipids and serum LDL-cholesterol were also elevated with depleted levels of serum HDL-cholesterol and tissue phospholipid. The acetaminophen-induced animals showed significant alterations in th

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate condition between normal aging and dementia. Drug intervention is an important way to prevent MCI from developing into dementia. GuiLingJi (GLJ) is a traditional Chinese medicine formulae and it has the effect of enhancing memory. In view of the absence of special effective drugs for MCI, GLJ warrants investigation as a potential therapeutic agent.
METHODS: This study uses a rat model of MCI, induced by D-galactose injections and a semi-high-fat diet, to explore the therapeutic efficacy of GLJ in MCI and elucidate the potential un

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of sour cherry seed oils, including samples obtained by Soxhlet extraction and maceration, as well as ten commercial samples. The results demonstrated that the 15-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity of the oil samples ranged from 6% to 80%. Regarding cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition, while most samples showed negligible activity, the oil produced by Soxhlet extraction inhibited COX-1 and COX-2 by 38% and 32%, respectively. Similarly, the oil obtained via maceration showed inhibition rates of 25% and 23% for COX-1 and COX-2, respe

Red goji berries, reputed worldwide as "superfruit", are commonly marketed after natural drying or hot-air drying. A sensomics approach was applied to the aroma analysis of red goji berries under two drying methods. Fifty-two aroma-active compounds were screened and identified by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) coupled with gas chromatography with olfactometry (GC/O). The contents and the odor activity values (OAVs) of 49 aroma-active compounds were determined. Acetic acid was the predominant aroma compounds in both berries. Meanwhile, the key aroma compounds in both berries were (E)-2-

Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is a severe chronic neurodegenerative disease in Asia. Identification of important metabolites associated with PACG is crucial for early intervention and advancing knowledge of the disease mechanism. We applied gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for targeted metabolomic analysis on serum samples from 38 newly diagnosed PACG patients and 48 controls. Palmitoleic acid (PA), linoleic acid (LA), γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) were identified as important metabolites associated with PACG. PA and GLA were significantly elevated (p <

Hydroxycinnamic acid bound arabinoxylans (HCA-AXs) were extracted from brans of five Indian millet varieties and response surface methodology was used to optimize the extraction conditions. The optimal condition to obtain highest yield of millet HCA-AXs was determined as follows: time 61min, temperature 66°C, ratio of solvent to sample 12ml/g. Linkage analysis indicated that hydroxycinnamic acid bound arabinoxylan from kodo millet (KM-HCA-AX) contained comparatively low branched arabinoxylan consisting of 14.6% mono-substituted, 1.2% di-substituted and 41.2% un-substituted Xylp residues. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid (LA), which are both n-6 unsaturated fatty acids, play vital roles in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation. The multi-functional protein scavenger receptor CD36 has also been shown to participate in inflammation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the interactions between CD36 and GLA or LA in LPS-induced inflammation remain unclear. We used small interfering RNA and adenoviral systems to manipulate CD36 expression in primary goat mammary gland epithelial cells (pGMECs), and the results showed that nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) l

Experimental Mg2+ deficiency was induced in a group of rats by feeding them a Mg2+-deficient diet for 23 days. They were pair-fed to compare with a control group of rats fed a Mg2+-sufficient diet. In the Mg2+-deficient group the plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were increased while HDL-cholesterol was decreased. In the Mg2+-deficient group the plasma level of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS) used as a measure for lipid peroxidation was increased. The increase was attributed to the increased cytosolic Ca2+ in Mg2+-deficiency which can cause: 1) increase of hydro

The rise of difficult-to-treat fungal infections necessitates novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, endophytic fungi were isolated from Acalypha hispida leaves and molecularly identified as Penicillium oxalicum via 18S rRNA sequencing. LC-MS/MS analysis of the fungal extract revealed major bioactive compounds, including linoleic acid, sinapinic acid, alternariol monomethyl ether, ellagic acid, and kaurenic acid. Oily-core poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether-block-poly(lactide-co-glycolide) nanocapsules (PEGylated PLGA NCs) were developed to encapsulate the fungal extract, improving stab

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has been consistently linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). HDL lipoproteins may serve as a possible link in this association through their hepatic synthesis and atheroprotective properties. Serum samples were collected from 51 MASLD patients (diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound), 40 with coronary artery disease, and 50 healthy controls. HDL lipid profiles were investigated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. Patients with MASLD exhibit an increased percentage of lysophosphatidylcholine a

Nitroxyl radicals can trap fatty acid allyl radicals on ferric-lipoxygenases at lower oxygen content, which are an intermediate in the lipoxygenase reaction. In the present study, we examined whether nitroxyl radical-trapping of fatty acid allyl radicals on the enzyme proceeds in biological fluids with abundant antioxidants. The fatty acid allyl radical-nitroxyl radical adducts were quantified by HPLC with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD); the adducts in eluate degraded into nitroxyl radical by passing through heating coil at 100 degrees C, and then nitroxyl radical was detected by electro

To determine whether haemodialysis produces an increase in free radical activity, plasma phospholipid plus free fatty acid (PL+FFA) octadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (18:2(9,11)) and plasma thiobarbituric acid reactivity (TBAR) were measured serially during dialysis with cuprophan and polycarbonate membranes. Plasma TBAR did not change significantly during dialysis with either membrane. There was however, an increase in PL + FFA 18:2(9,11) and in the molar ratio of 18:2(9,11) to its parent compound, linoleic acid (18:2(9,12)), with both membranes, although this was most significant with cuprophan mem

"Cooked" flavor was the key factor affecting the aroma quality of peach puree (PP) during thermal treatments, and it could be effectively regulated by glucose oxidase (GOD). However, the interaction between GOD and "cooked" components needs in-depth research. In this study, 28 aroma-active compounds with odor activity value ≥1 were first identified in PP during concentration and sterilization. It was confirmed that 1-octen-3-one contributed to the "cooked" attribute using sensomics including aroma recombination and omission, and the odor was enhanced when its concentration was ≥1.25 μg/g. GOD

Lipid droplets (LDs) are central in regulating metabolism in stress-induced conditions, including one triggered by nutrient deprivation. Genetic manipulation of the lipid metabolic network or supplementation of a high-fat diet/oleic acid (OA) are the traditional routes for voluntarily triggering LD formation in cells and animals to study the role of LDs in disease biology. We developed a new screening platform for identifying small molecule-based LD inducers, which identified linoleic acid (LOA, diunsaturated fatty acid) as a better tool than OA (monounsaturated fatty acid) in promoting LD for

Ascorbic acid is a multifaceted compound that can perform both antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities in the redox reactions induced by transition metal ions, so its role in nature and especially in the human body is still the subject of debate. In the present study, we have examined the influence of ascorbic acid on lipid peroxidation in a model system that mimics the cell membrane, namely micelles of linoleic acid (LA), induced by chelate complexes of iron and copper ions with quinone-chelator 2-phenyl-4-(butylamino)-naphtholquinoline-7,12-dione (Q1). This quinone effectively generates react

To determine the molecular basis of the neuropathology of copper deficiency, brain lipid composition was determined in second-generation copper-deficient rats. Non-parous female rats were fed a low copper diet (0.5 mg Cu/kg) or a control diet (10 mg Cu/kg) during gestation and lactation, and the offspring were continued on the respective diets to approximately 8 wk of age. In one experiment the source of carbohydrate was 15% starch and 52.6% sucrose, and in another experiment sucrose and glucose were compared in a factorial design. The source of carbohydrate had no effect on copper status. Mye
