[A retrospective assessment of spinocellular carcinomas of the lip treated by roentgenotherapy].

From December 1965 to December 1987 (22 years), 279 patients with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the lip were treated in this Department with roentgenotherapy. All the patients that had completed the treatment were evaluated with a follow-up time of 5 years (n=255). Distribution by age, sex, occupation, residence, evolution time of the lesion, localization (upper lip, lower lip and commissure), tumoral size and histological grade were analysed. Concerning technical conditions and fractionation, we evaluated the type and which dose of radiation elicit acute reactions as wel

[Applied phoniatry. VI. The dysarthria and aphasia syndromes as a result of cranial nerve palsies (author's transl)].

Dysarthria and aphasia represent primary symptoms of cerebral nerve dysfunction, and may particularly involve the facial and the hypoglossal nerves. In order for management to be effective, careful examination of the muscular functions of the oral cavity is required, with particular emphasis placed on the movements of the tongue and velum. Such evaluation, which utilizes both neuropsychologic and linguistic determinations, permit an accurate differentiation of the possible causes of aphasia to be made. During the evaluation, both verbal and non-verbal responses by the patient are included for

Goldenhar's syndrome associated with cardiac malformations.

A case of Goldenhar's syndrome associated with cardiac malformations such as single ventricle, atresia of pulmonary artery, and patent ductus arteriosus is described. The association of cardiac malformations with Goldenhar's syndrome is very rare and suggests that it is necessary to perform a careful clinical evaluation in this syndrome whether or not additional malformations may exist in visceral organs.

Evaluation of specific modified histones in lip carcinogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Histones regulate chromatin density and therefore influence gene expression and cellular proliferation. These properties are modified by methylation, acetylation and phosphorylation of histones. The aim of this study was to investigate the variation of specific modified histones in actinic cheilitis (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (SCCL). METHODS: Samples of non-neoplastic tissue of the lip (NNTL, n = 9), AC (n = 33), and SCCL (n = 27) were submitted to immunohistochemistry to detect the modified histones H3K36me3, H3K9ac, H4K12ac, and H3S10 ph. RESULTS: Reactivity for

The Recurrent E-Cadherin (CDH1) Mutation c.760G>A Causes Orofacial Clefts but Does Not Predispose to Hereditary Cancer.

Objective: Congenital, non-syndromic orofacial clefts (CL/P) are infrequently monogenic in etiology. However, heterozygous pathogenic CDH1 germline variants were reported in a few non-syndromic CL/P families, as well as in one syndromic form of CL/P: the blepharocheilodontic syndrome. CDH1 encodes epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin), and close to 300 different pathogenic CDH1 variants are listed in the ClinVar mutation database. The majority of CDH1 germline variants are implicated in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to classify the CDH1 c.760

Cleft lip/palate and hereditary diffuse gastric cancer: report of a family harboring a CDH1 c.687 + 1G > A germline mutation and review of the literature.

Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is an autosomal-dominantly inherited cancer syndrome associated with a high risk for diffuse gastric and lobular breast cancer, caused by heterozygous CDH1 germline mutations. Of note, also cleft lip/palate (CLP) has been described in few HDGC families. Here we report on an extensive pedigree presenting with HDGC, CLP and a CDH1 splice site mutation (c.687 + 1G > A) and review the literature for families with CDH1 mutations, HDGC and CLP. Transcript analysis showed that the c.687 + 1G > A mutation leads to loss of the last 42 bp of exon 5 and is consequ

A New Modification of Fan Flap for Large Lower Lip Defects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The reconstruction of the lower lip defects which may result from malignancy, trauma, and burn is necessary for mastication, oral competence, salivary retain, articulation, and aesthetic appearance of the face. While small (30% of the lower lip) and medium (30%-80% of the lower lip) size defects are reconstructed using primary repair and local flaps, reconstruction of the large defects including total and near-total of the lower lip is very challenging entity. We introduce a new modification of the fan flap named extended fan flap for reconstruction of the total and near-t

One stage reconstruction of the floor of the mouth with a subcutaneous pedicled nasolabial flap.

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial flaps have been recognised as versatile flaps for a variety of defects in the face, nose, lip and the oral cavity. Random pattern inferiorly based nasolabial flaps (NLF) have been utilised for covering small defects on the anterior floor of the mouth, but usually require a second stage procedure to divide the flap base. A subcutaneous pedicled inferiorly based nasolabial flap can provide a one stage repair of moderate sized defects of the floor of the mouth after de epithelialisation of the base of the flap. AIM: To evaluate the feasibility of a single stage reconstruct

Identification of germline mutations in the cancer predisposing gene CDH1 in patients with orofacial clefts.

Orofacial clefts (OFC) are among the most common birth defects worldwide. The etiology of non-syndromic OFC is still largely unknown. During embryonic development, the cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin, encoded by CDH1, is highly expressed in the median edge epithelium of the palate. Furthermore, in multiple families with CDH1 mutations, OFC cases are observed. To determine whether CDH1 is a causative gene for non-syndromic OFC and to assess whether CDH1 mutation screening in non-syndromic OFC patients enables identification of families at risk of cancer, direct sequencing of the full coding s

Gene expression profiling analysis contributes to understanding the association between non-syndromic cleft lip and palate, and cancer.

The present study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying non‑syndromic cleft lip, with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), and the association between this disease and cancer. The GSE42589 data set was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, and contained seven dental pulp stem cell samples from children with NSCL/P in the exfoliation period, and six controls. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened using the RankProd method, and their potential functions were revealed by pathway enrichment analysis and construction of a pathway interaction network.
