[Magnesium: physiological and clinical relevance. 1: homeostasis and alterations in the metabolism of magnesium].

Magnesium is the second most abundant cation in intracellular fluid and is an essential electrolyte. It has several critically important roles in the body, namely as a cofactor in numerous enzyme systems, and is involved in phosphate transfer, muscle contractility and neuronal transmission. The physiologic role, homeostasis, causes and clinical manifestations of hypo and hypermagnesemia and their therapy are briefly reviewed. Magnesium treatment is emerging as an important adjunct in the management of a few conditions: prevention and control of seizures in eclampsia, cardiovascular diseases, d

Magnesium fortification of water. A possible step forward in preventive medicine?

Magnesium is an essential cation for more than 300 enzymes in our body. Among them, it is a cofactor for ATP metabolism. Diverse clinical manifestations have been reported in conjunction with Mg++ deficiencies, including sudden death, accelerated atherosclerosis, asthma, neurologic and even psychiatric clinical entities. Limited previous studies with Mg++ supplementation have shown to be of a large preventive advantages. We summarize the current literature concerning Mg++ supplementation and recommend to do so on national basis adding magnesium to the water supplies of large areas.

[Magnesium in obstetric pathology].

Mean levels of maternal blood magnesium in a group of pathological pregnancies were compared to levels found in a group of physiological pregnancies. The paper concludes that low levels of blood magnesium are an improbable condition in pregnancy due to the existence of protective mechanisms, and that they are therefore rarely the cause of the most common obstetric pathologies.

[Mineral balance during hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration].

Keeping calcium (Ca) balance in equilibrium is one of the main goals in dialysis patients, and the dialysis schedule by itself can affect mineral metabolism. The aim of this paper is to evaluate Ca and magnesium (Mg) balances on different Quf in patients on RDT. Twenty-one patients [7 on hemodialysis (HD), 14 on hemodiafiltration (HDF)] were studied. Ca and Mg balances were assessed by measuring Ca and Mg in whole dialysis fluid. One patients on HDF was observed for three dialysis sessions, on different Quf, and negative values were observed for Quf above 70 ml/min. Mg balance was always negat

Magnesium is an essential cofactor in a host of important biochemical reactions. Magnesium deficiency is fairly common in certain groups of patients and can cause serious complications. The diagnosis is often difficult to make in the Emergency Department setting. The emergency physician should be aware of clinical situations that predispose to magne …

Comparing the Bioavailability of Two Seawater-Derived Magnesium Preparations.

Magnesium deficiency is a common problem worldwide; however, existing magnesium dietary supplement sources require large doses to overcome low bioavailability. Previously research has established that seawater contains magnesium in addition to 72 other trace and ultratrace minerals, resulting in better bioavailability than traditional magnesium sources. The purpose of the present study was to compare the bioavailability of magnesium obtained from two different seawater processing methods (hydroxide vs. citrate). In a double-blind manner, healthy, young men and women (N = 20) completed three tr…

Disorders of Calcium and Magnesium.

This review will discuss the importance and homeostasis of calcium and magnesium in the human body, as well as the implications and treatment of disordered calcium and magnesium. With calcium and magnesium often considered to be the "forgotten cations" in medicine, it is our hope that this review will lead providers to evaluate for and effectively manage these electrolyte disorders in the emergency department.

Incidence of ionized hypomagnesemia in adult patients undergoing noncardiac major surgery: a prospective observational trial.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the incidence of preoperative ionized hypomagnesemia and compare with that of total hypomagnesemia. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 536 patients aged >20 years who were scheduled for elective surgery. Total and ionized magnesium levels were evaluated before and after the surgery. Based on these levels, patients were classified into the following groups: ionized hypo- (<0.42 mmol/L), normo- (0.42-0.59 mmol/L) and hypermagnesemia (>0.59 mmol/L), as well as total hypo- (<1.9 mg/dL[0.78 mmol/L]), normo- (1.9-2.7 mg/dL[0.78-

[Lipid metabolism and magnesium].

According to the Vital Statistics Report published by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, heart disease and cerebrovascular disease are the main causes of death in Japan. The main pathological finding in these diseases is atherosclerosis and the main risk factors, besides the patient's age and diathesis, include hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smoking. Among the aforementioned various risk factors, hyperlipidemia play a crucial role at the stage of atherosclerosis. The main pathological findings in atherosclerosis include abnormal reactions of neutrophils, lymphocy
