Parental exposure to carcinogens and risk for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Colombia, 2000-2005.

BACKGROUND: School readiness is an important public health outcome, determined by a set of interdependent health and developmental trajectories and influenced by a child's family, school, and community environments. The same factors that influence school readiness also influence educational success and health throughout life. CONTEXT: A California cigarette tax ballot initiative (Proposition 10) created new resources for children aged 0 to 5 years and their families statewide through county-level First 5 commissions, including First 5 LA in Los Angeles County. An opportunity to define and pro

The mediating role of steroid hormones in the relationship between bisphenol A and its alternatives bisphenol S and F exposure and preeclampsia.

Steroid hormone imbalance is believed to increase the odds of developing PE. Bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitutes (e.g., bisphenol S (BPS) … etween BPS concentrations and the development of PE might be mediated by maternal T. In conclusion, maternal exposure to BPS during pregnancy is linked to higher maternal T concentrations, which might increase the odds of developing PE. T might mediate the association between BPS exposure and the development of PE.

Maternal Interpersonal Trauma and Child Social-Emotional Development: An Intergenerational Effect.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that maternal interpersonal trauma can adversely affect offspring health, but little is known about potential transmission pathways. We investigated whether interpersonal trauma exposure had direct and indirect associations with offspring social-emotional development at 12-months of age in an at-risk, home visited population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 1172 mother-child dyads who participated in a multi-site, early childhood home visiting program. Children were born January 2007 to June 2010 and data were collected at enrolment (prenat

Combined Effects of Gestational Phthalate Exposure and Zinc Deficiency on Steroid Metabolism and Growth.

Disruption of steroid hormone signaling has been implicated independently in the developmental abnormalities resulting from maternal phthalate plasticizer exposure and developmental zinc deficiency. This study investigated if secondary zinc deficiency may result from dietary exposure to a low level of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) through gestation and if this could be associated with altered steroid metabolism. The interaction between marginal zinc nutrition and DEHP exposure to affect pregnancy outcome, zinc status, and steroid metabolism was also assessed. For this purpose, rats were fed

Time-dependent placental transfer of sevoflurane during cesarean delivery under general anesthesia: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: General anesthesia for cesarean delivery requires balancing adequate maternal anesthetic depth against fetal drug exposure. The relationship between induction-to-delivery time, maternal anesthetic concentration, and fetal sevoflurane exposure remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 16 women undergoing elective cesarean delivery under general anesthesia were enrolled. Paired maternal and umbilical blood samples were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry at delivery. Our primary investigation was the correlation betw

Maternal age, anthropometrics and pregnancy oestriol.

It has been hypothesised that oestrogen exposure in utero influences the risk for breast cancer in adult life. Although several studies report associations between breast cancer and maternal factors associated with birthweight of the offspring - a marker for antenatal oestriol exposure - little is known about the relations between maternal oestrogen levels and these factors per se. We therefore analysed the association between oestriol levels in 188 women in the 17th, 25th, 33rd and 37th weeks of pregnancy, and maternal age, prepregnancy weight, height and pregnancy weight gain. Both maternal

[Environmental Chemical Exposure and Its Effects on Infants' Reproductive Hormones].

In recent years, the birthrate has been continuously declining in Japan. The main causes of the decline are social factors. On the other hand, there is increasing evidence that many environmental chemicals show endocrine disrupting properties. Thus, we hypothesized that exposure to these chemicals would also be a causal for the fertility crisis. In this review, we examined current evidence that focused on environmental chemical exposure in utero and its association with reproductive hormones in children. We have included the findings from a prospective birth cohorts, the Hokkaido Study on Envi

Maternal Blood Manganese and Early Neurodevelopment: The Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) Study.

BACKGROUND: Manganese is an essential trace element and common component of water, soil, and air. Prenatal manganese exposure may affect fetal and infantile neurodevelopment, but reports on in utero manganese exposure and infant neurodevelopment are rare. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate a relationship between maternal blood manganese level and neurodevelopment of infants at 6 months of age. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) birth cohort study. The study population included 232 pairs of pregnant women and their infants

Maternal smoking and birth defects: validity of birth certificate data for effect estimation.

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to assess the validity of birth certificate data for estimating the association between maternal smoking and birth defects. The US standard birth certificate includes check boxes for maternal smoking and for 21 congenital anomalies. The sensitivity and specificity of birth certificate data have been studied, but previous studies have not addressed the validity of these data for estimating the association between birth defects and maternal smoking or other risk factors. METHODS: US public-use natality data (1997-1998) were used to calculate the prevalence ratio (

Prenatal Smoking Exposures and Epigenome-Wide Methylation in Newborn Blood.

BACKGROUND: Maternal sustained smoking during pregnancy is associated with thousands of differentially methylated CpGs in newborns, but impacts of other prenatal tobacco smoking exposures remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify differential DNA methylation in newborns from maternal sustained smoking and less studied prenatal smoking exposures (i.e., maternal exposure to secondhand smoke [SHS] exposure during pregnancy, maternal quitting before pregnancy, paternal smoking around conception, and paternal quitting before pregnancy). METHODS: We conducted a large meta-analysis of prenatal tobacco…

Investigating the Association Between Infantile Colic and Parental Migraine.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the prevalence of infantile colic and determine its associated factors. Previous studies demonstrate that maternal migraine is significantly associated with increased odds of infantile colic. However, paternal migraine is not significantly associated with infantile colic. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of infants and parents. We surveyed all parents who brought healthy babies aged ≥3 months to our clinic. We determined the association of infantile colic with the following: child being the first- or nonfirst-born, breastfed or mixed- or formula-fed, sleep

Socioeconomic position and exposure to multiple environmental chemical contaminants in six European mother-child cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to environmental chemical contaminants at critical periods of development can lead to lifelong health consequences. Traditionally, socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are thought to experience higher contaminant exposures; however, this relationship may not hold for all contaminants. METHODS: Using data from six European birth cohorts (1301 mother-child pairs), we determined biomarkers of exposure to 41 contaminants in biological samples from children (6-12 years) and their mothers during pregnancy, including organochlorine compounds (OCs), polybrominated dipheny

Drinking water disinfection byproducts and risk of orofacial clefts in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBP)s may contribute to orofacial cleft (OFC) development, but studies are sparse and beset with limitations. METHODS: Population-based, maternal interview reports of drinking water filtration and consumption for 680 OFC cases (535 isolated) and 1826 controls were linked with DBP concentration data using maternal residential addresses and public water system monitoring data. Maternal individual-level exposures to trihalomethanes (THM)s and haloacetic acids (HAA)s (µg/L of water consumed) were estimated from reported cons…

A High Adherence to Six Food Targets of the Mediterranean Diet in the Late First Trimester is Associated with a Reduction in the Risk of Materno-Foetal Outcomes: The St. Carlos Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Prevention Study.

A prenatal diet affects materno-foetal outcomes. This is a post hoc analysis of the St. Carlos gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) Prevention Study. It aims to evaluate the effect of a late first-trimester (>12 gestational weeks) degree of adherence to a MedDiet pattern-based on six food targets-on a composite of materno-foetal outcomes (CMFCs). The CMFCs were defined as having emergency C-section, perineal trauma, pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia, prematurity, large-for-gestational-age, and/or small-for-gestational-age. A total of 874 women were stratified into three groups acc

Prenatal and childhood exposure to mixtures of environmental chemicals and adolescence attentional problems: a triangulation study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental chemicals is suspected to influence attentional function, yet causal evidence is inconsistent. We triangulated multiple lines of evidence to estimate the effects of prenatal and childhood exposure to environmental chemicals on adolescent attention problems. METHODS: We followed 1,658 participants in the European Human Early-Life Exposome cohort. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), metals, phenols, and phthalate and organophosphate pesticide (OPP) metabolites were measured during pregnancy and childhood. Adolescent attention problems were evaluated

[Transgenerational effects of parental exposure to ionizing radiation].

The deleterious effects of exposure to ionizing radiation on human health have been known for many years. The main long term effect of this exposure is an increase in the risk for developing benign and malignant tumors in the exposed population. This review summarizes the existing data on the possible effects of ionizing radiation on the second generation, focusing on cancer risk. The two mechanisms through which parents' exposure to radiation could affect their children's health are intrauterine exposure of the fetus and preconception exposure of the gonads. Intrauterine exposure to ionizing

Ambient particulate matter, maternal thyroid function, and birth weight: A mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight (BW) is an indicator of fetal growth and development. Previous studies showed inconsistent results on the association of ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure with BW, and the role of maternal thyroid function has not been clarified. METHODS: We recruited 1711 gravidas between 2017 and 2019 in Henan, China. All participants were followed up until delivery. Daily concentrations of PM, including PM2.5 and PM10, were evaluated by using the spatial-temporal model. Maternal thyroid hormone (TH) levels were quantified by electrochemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay.
