Staging-dependent dysbiosis of plaque microbiota in early childhood caries.

OBJECTIVES: The stage-specific ecological and functional microbial features of ECC remains poorly defined. This study aimed to characterize the lesion-associated microbiome and evaluate stage-specific microbial signatures of ECC. METHODS: Paired supragingival plaque samples were collected from an active cavitated lesion (caries) and a spatially-matched intact surface (control) of 84 ECC-affected children aged 3 - 4 years. Lesions were classified by depth as enamel caries and dentine caries. Microbial profiles were generated by 16S rRNA sequencing and analysed for community diversity, structur

Skin microbiota of fallow deer: Composition, diversity, and influencing factors.

Understanding the microbiota of wild animals can contribute to the monitoring of population health or habitat changes. The skin microbiota of fallow deer remains poorly characterized and represents a gap in current veterinary microbiology research. The aim of this study was to analyse skin microbiota of fifteen clinically healthy fallow deer using next-generation sequencing. Genomic DNA was extracted from superficial skin swabs collected from three anatomical sites per individual (n = 45 samples) and sequenced targeting the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequencing.…

Microbiota metabolite lithocholic acid in cancer: Mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

The human gut microbiome is centrally implicated in host disease and health control via the production of a range of bioactive metabolites. Of these, lithocholic acid (LCA), a derivative of microbial metabolism secondary bile acid, has received attention owing to its multifaceted functions in cancer. LCA, a hydrophobic microbiota-derived bile acid, was implicated in carcinogenicity and hepatotoxicity even in the ancient era. In this sense, studies have found a contrasting role of LCA as a tumor promoter or tumor suppressor based on the molecular environment and type of tumor. Antitumor effects…

Functional capacities drive recruitment of bacteria into plant root microbiota.

Root-associated microbiomes are shaped by the plant, yet vary across environments and hosts, challenging prediction and engineering. Here, to uncover principles of bacterial selection at the root-soil interface, we applied a systems-level approach using reconstitution studies with communities of isolates from Arabidopsis, barley and Lotus grown in soil. Functional divergence among the microbiota of the host plants reflected distinct strategies: in Arabidopsis and barley, recruitment was primarily shaped by inoculum, while Lotus root environment favoured fewer, functionally diverse isolates, ak…

Dietary Modulation of Migraine: Metabolic, Neuroinflammatory and Microbiota-Mediated Mechanisms.

Migraine is a common neurological condition characterized by recurrent headache attacks, frequently associated with prodromal, aura, and postdrome phases. Increasing evidence suggests that metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction play a central role in migraine pathophysiology, contributing to cortical hyperexcitability and increased oxidative stress. Additionally, the gut microbiota has emerged as an important modulator of migraine susceptibility via the gut-brain axis, influencing inflammation, neurotransmitter production, and neuronal excitability. Specific dietary interventions, including k…

Bactrocera dorsalis and Its Gut Microbiota: An Emerging Insect Model.

The gut microbiota influences host health, development, nutrition, and behavior, positioning it as a frontier research area in life sciences. Bactrocera dorsalis is a major agricultural pest, with a short life cycle, ease of laboratory rearing, and the availability of germ-free larvae. The gut microbiota of B. dorsalis is complex and relatively insensitive to environmental influences. Due to these advantages, B. dorsalis has emerged as a promising model organism for gut microbiota research. This review synthesizes the advantages of B. dorsalis as a model organism, detailing its gut structure a…

Microbiota injury during conditioning for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for hematological malignancies, but it is associated with substantial gut microbial dysbiosis linked to graft-versus-host disease, infections, and transplant-related mortality. The conditioning regimen represents the first major iatrogenic insult delivered within the transplant pathway, but its specific contribution to microbiota injury, independent of subsequent aplasia, antibiotic exposure, and mucositis, remains incompletely characterized. We conducted a prospective, single-center, observation…

Alteration of small intestinal microbiota in diet-induced steatohepatitis mice.

OBJECTIVE: Dysbiosis is an important factor that exacerbate metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) via the gut-liver axis. The alterations in the small intestinal microbiota and their contribution to MASH pathogenesis remain largely unexplored. The present study aimed to clarify the alteration of small intestinal microbiota and the gene expression in a diet-induced mouse model of MASH. METHODS: C57BL6/J mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined high-fat diet (CDAHFD) to induce MASH. qRT-PCR was performed to evaluate the gene expression in liver and ileal tissues.…

The Interplay between Gut Microbiota and Diet-Induced Kidney Protection.

KEY POINTS: Beneficial diets changed the composition of gut microbiota in an ischemia-reperfusion injury‑dependent manner in rodents. Taxonomic and functional profiling revealed a central role of Lachnospiraceae , a main producer of microbially derived short-chain fatty acids. Comparative bulk transcriptomics suggested the metabolic use of these bacterial products as an additional energy source in kidneys of protected mice. BACKGROUND: On one hand, dietary interventions are known for their pivotal role in regulating diversity, composition, and function of the gut microbiome. On the other hand…

Microbiota and lipid mediators: from molecular crosstalk to therapeutic opportunities.

The gut microbiota constitutes a metabolically active ecosystem that dynamically interacts with the host lipid metabolism and cellular signaling networks. While dietary lipids shape the microbial composition and metabolite production, the microbiota reciprocally biotransform fatty acids, thereby regulating lipid mediator bioavailability and host cellular responses. This bidirectional molecular crosstalk plays a pivotal role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis, epithelial barrier integrity, and immune regulation. Microbiota-derived lipid signals, including short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, …

IBS and SIBO: Gut Microbiota, Pathophysiology, and Non-Pharmacological Interventions.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) share symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. Both are linked to dysbiosis and gut-brain axis dysfunction. IBS is a multifactorial disorder characterized by abnormal motility, visceral hypersensitivity, low-grade inflammation, and alterations in the microbiota. In contrast, SIBO is defined by excessive bacterial colonization of the small intestine that can mimic or worsen IBS symptoms. Gut microbes and their metabolites influence motility, immune activation, barrier integrity, and gas p…
