Mental health among caregivers of children with nephrotic syndrome: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with nephrotic syndrome may experience psychological challenges due to the disease's unpredictability and home monitoring burden. Prevalence and risk factors of distress, anxiety, and depression among these caregivers are unknown. METHODS: We analyzed data from Insight into Nephrotic Syndrome: Investigating Genes, Health, and Therapeutics, a prospective observational childhood nephrotic syndrome cohort. We included children (1-18 years) diagnosed from 1996-2023 from the greater Toronto area, Canada, and their caregivers. Children had annual study visits for

Disparities in parental distress in a multicenter clinical trial for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Parent psychological distress during childhood cancer treatment has short- and long-term implications for parent, child, and family well-being. Identifying targetable predictors of parental distress is essential to inform interventions. We investigated the association between household material hardship (HMH), a modifiable poverty-exposure defined as housing, food, or utility insecurity, and severe psychological distress among parents of children aged 1-17 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) enrolled on the multicenter Dana-Farber ALL Consortium Trial 16-001. METHODS: Th

The revictimization of older Mexican women: understanding the accumulation of multiple victimizations throughout a lifetime.

BACKGROUND: The victimization of women constitutes a human rights violation and a health risk factor. The central objectives of this study were to analyze the probability of revictimization among older adult Mexican women and to examine whether child abuse (CA) and/or intimate partner violence (IPV) are associated with a greater risk of elder abuse (EA) victimization. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of 18416 women 60 and older, based on data from the National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (2016), which is national and subnational representative. A descripti

Effectiveness of a stepped-care programme of internet-based psychological interventions for healthcare workers with psychological distress: Study protocol for the RESPOND healthcare workers randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has challenged health services worldwide, with a worsening of healthcare workers' mental health within initial pandemic hotspots. In early 2022, the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly around the world. This study explores the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a stepped-care programme of scalable, internet-based psychological interventions for distressed health workers on self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms. METHODS: We present the study protocol for a multicentre (two sites), parallel-group (1:1 allocation ratio), an

The relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms in middle school students: a network analysis model.

OBJECTIVE: Based on network analysis methodology, a network model was constructed to elucidate the relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms among middle school students. By identifying core nodes (high-strength symptoms) and bridge nodes (cross-group associated symptoms) within the two symptom clusters, the study reveals the interactive pathways between these constructs. This approach provides a foundation for precise mental health interventions tailored to middle school students. METHODS: A total of 1,576 middle school students in central Anhui Province were selected by th

Integrating and synthesizing adversity and resilience knowledge and action: The ICARE model.

This article proposes a model for understanding the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as dynamic and interrelated biobehavioral adaptations to early life stress that have predictable consequences on development and health. Drawing upon research from multiple theoretical and methodological approaches, the intergenerational and cumulative adverse and resilient experiences (ICARE) model posits that the negative consequences of ACEs result from biological and behavioral adaptations to adversity that alter cognitive, social, and emotional development. These adaptations often have nega

Decentering, rumination, cognitive defusion, and psychological flexibility in people with chronic pain.

The psychological flexibility model appears to be useful for organizing research into chronic pain. One component of the model is called "cognitive defusion." A process referred to as decentering, measured by the Experiences Questionnaire (EQ), appears similar to cognitive defusion. The purpose of this study is to extend previous investigations of the EQ, to evaluate its factor structure, and examine both indirect and direct roles for decentering in relation to key clinical outcomes. 352 people seeking pain treatment participated in this study. All completed the EQ and standard measures of dai

Implicit awareness in anosognosia: clinical observations, experimental evidence, and theoretical implications.

Unawareness  of deficits caused by brain damage or neurodegeneration, termed anosognosia, has been demonstrated in a number of different neurological conditions. Clinical observation suggests that unawareness paradoxically can be accompanied by signs of understanding or representation of deficit, but not explicitly expressed. Such "implicit awareness," an apparent oxymoron, is implied by or inferred from actions or statements of the person with neurological disorder. In the current paper, we review clinical observations and experimental evidence which suggest the occurrence of implicit awarene

Homeless identities: enacted and ascribed.

Homelessness has been a perennial concern for sociologists. It is a confronting phenomenon that can challenge western notions of home, a discrete family unit and the ascetics and order of public space. To be without a home and to reside in public places illustrates both an intriguing way of living and some fundamental inadequacies in the functioning of society. Much homelessness research has had the consequence of isolating the 'homeless person' as distinct category or indeed type of individual. They are ascribed with homeless identities. The homeless identity is not simply presented as one di

Testing the construct validity of Dixon and Johnson's (2007) Gambling Functional Assessment.

The Gambling Functional Assessment (GFA; Dixon & Johnson, 2007) is a 20-item self-report inventory identifying four potential consequences maintaining gambling behavior. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are performed for two large, nonclinical samples of university undergraduates. For the exploratory analysis, the optimal model yields two factors: Positive Reinforcement (correlated with GFA Sensory, Attention, and Tangible scores) and Negative Reinforcement (correlated with GFA Escape scores). One GFA item fails to load on either factor adequately. Factor loadings are confirmed usi

Dependent personality disorder: comparing an expert generated and empirically derived five-factor model personality disorder count.

Assessment of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th Ed.; DSM-IV ) personality disorders (PDs) using five-factor model (FFM) prototypes and counts has shown substantial promise, with a few exceptions. Miller, Reynolds, and Pilkonis suggested that the expert-generated FFM dependent prototype might be misspecified in relation to the DSM-IV because of the overemphasis of high Agreeableness and underemphasis of low Conscientiousness in the experts' conception. A meta-analytic review of the relations between the FFM facets and Dependent PD (DPD) was conducted and used to cre

Perceived effects of emotion intensity on athletic performance: a contingency-based individualized approach.

This study, based on the Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning model, examined the perceived effect of idiosyncratic emotions and bodily symptoms on athletic performance along the entire emotion-intensity range. The participants were 35 elite Italian athletes, 16 women and 19 men, competing in either figure skating or gymnastics. Idiosyncratic emotional descriptors were rated on Borg's CR-10 scale to estimate the perceived impact on performance and hedonic tone for each level of emotion-intensity range. The findings revealed a large interindividual variability in the content of emotions as w

Is vision continuous with cognition? The case for cognitive impenetrability of visual perception.

Although the study of visual perception has made more progress in the past 40 years than any other area of cognitive science, there remain major disagreements as to how closely vision is tied to cognition. This target article sets out some of the arguments for both sides (arguments from computer vision, neuroscience, psychophysics, perceptual learning, and other areas of vision science) and defends the position that an important part of visual perception, corresponding to what some people have called early vision, is prohibited from accessing relevant expectations, knowledge, and utilities in

[Premorbid adjustment and negative schizophrenic symptoms].

The relationship between premorbid schizoid traits and the positive and negative symptoms assessed by the Andreasen's SANS and SAPS scales was studied in a sample of 115 DSM-III-R schizophrenics. For the assessment of the schizoid traits the abbreviated Philip's scale of premorbid social-personal adjustment was employed. Negative symptoms, excepting the attentional scale, but no positive symptoms were significantly correlated (p < or = .01) with the Philips's scale. These results suggest that the schizoid traits are the behavioral precursors of schizophrenic negative symptoms. The implications

Social attributional biases of peer-rejected and aggressive children.

Peer-rejected high-aggressive, rejected low-aggressive, and non-rejected third- and fifth-grade boys were shown sets of drawn pictures differently balanced on Kelley's social dimensions of distinctiveness (i.e., depicting a hypothetical peer interacting with other children) and consistency (i.e., depicting the peer interacting with the subject) information. Following each set, a provoking incident involving the subject and peer was described in which the subject experienced a negative outcome and the peer exhibited ambiguous intent. When given no social information, rejected high-aggressive an

[Psychopathology of the schizophrenic defect (creation of an integrated model of negative changes)].

An integrative model of schizophrenic defect is offered. The model presumes the negative changes to extend over all the levels of psychic activity, though in uneven manner, rather than be confined to a distinct sphere. In 200 schizophrenic patients the defect had a complicated structure integrating the negative changes of schizoid and pseudoorganic types. Extreme variants of integration of schizoid and pseudoorganic changes can be regarded as two distinct defect types with prevailing personality deformations (combination of verschroben-type changes with personality level decreasing) and the fa

Construction of a Risk Identification Model Based on Electrolytes and Related Factors for Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy: A Secondary Analysis of Clinical Trial Data.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is one of the most common symptoms during early gestation. A subset of affected women may progress to severe NVP, which is frequently accompanied by electrolyte disturbances, impaired nutritional status, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the relationships between multiple electrolyte-related factors and the severity of NVP have not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To explore the statistical associations between multiple electrolytes, related laboratory indicators, and NVP severity, and to develop a risk identification model

Psychological Safety and Workaholism Among Nurses: The Mediating Role of Patient Expectation Management and the Moderating Role of Age.

BACKGROUND: Psychological safety is an important organizational resource that promotes open communication, learning, and collaboration in nursing. However, its potential association with less desirable outcomes, such as workaholism, remains unclear. This study examined the associations between perceived psychological safety and workaholism among nurses, focusing on the mediating roles of supporting and suppressing patient expectations and the moderating role of age. METHODS: Data for this study were obtained from 523 nurses employed in public hospitals across Türkiye using a cross-sectional s

Perceived social support and mental health in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: mediating effects of resilience.

Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) experience elevated risks of psychological distress, yet the psychosocial mechanisms underlying this burden remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychological distress in adolescents with AIS and to investigate the roles of perceived social support and resilience as protective factors. In this cross-sectional study, 229 adolescents aged 12-18 years with confirmed AIS were recruited from a tertiary spine surgery center. Participants completed the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), the Multidimensional Scale of
