Performance of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and No-U-Turn Sampler for estimating genetic parameters and breeding values.

BACKGROUND: Hamiltonian Monte Carlo is one of the algorithms of the Markov chain Monte Carlo method that uses Hamiltonian dynamics to propose samples that follow a target distribution. The method can avoid the random walk behavior to achieve a more effective and consistent exploration of the probability space and sensitivity to correlated parameters, which are shortcomings that plague many Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. However, the performance of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo is highly sensitive to two hyperparameters. The No-U-Turn Sampler, an extension of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, was recently

The development and validation of a multivariable prognostic model to predict foot ulceration in diabetes using a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analyses.

AIMS: Diabetes guidelines recommend screening for the risk of foot ulceration but vary substantially in the underlying evidence base. Our purpose was to derive and validate a prognostic model of independent risk factors for foot ulceration in diabetes using all available individual patient data from cohort studies conducted worldwide. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual patient data from 10 cohort studies of risk factors in the prediction of foot ulceration in diabetes. Predictors were selected for plausibility, availability and low heterogeneity. Logisti

Comparative Cold Tolerance in Ceratitis capitata and Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Cold tolerance studies were conducted with the egg and larval stages of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) and melon fly, Zeugodacus (Bactrocera) cucurbitae (Coquillett) in Navel oranges to determine whether quarantine cold treatments approved for C. capitata might also be effective against Z. cucurbitae. Navel orange is a good host for C. capitata and a poor host for Z. cucurbitae, and therefore, artificial infestation of fruit was used to facilitate comparisons. Laboratory-reared eggs and larvae were inserted in the center of Navel oranges, placed in cold storage chamber

Does centrality in a cross-sectional network suggest intervention targets for social anxiety disorder?

OBJECTIVE: Network analysis allows us to identify the most interconnected (i.e., central) symptoms, and multiple authors have suggested that these symptoms might be important treatment targets. This is because change in central symptoms (relative to others) should have greater impact on change in all other symptoms. It has been argued that networks derived from cross-sectional data may help identify such important symptoms. We tested this hypothesis in social anxiety disorder. METHOD: We first estimated a state-of-the-art regularized partial correlation network based on participants with soci

[Research progress and enlightenment of HIV infection risk assessment model in men who have sex with men].

The incidence of high-risk sexual behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) is high, indicating that MSM is the high-risk population of HIV/AIDS, syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and also the key population of transmission control. However, the risk of HIV infection is different between individual MSM due to differences in socio-demographic characteristics, sexual characteristics, sexual networks and other factors. It is imperative to establish an HIV infection risk assessment model for MSM in China, to allow for MSM to quantitatively recognize their risk of HIV

T3 versus T4 thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Palmar hyperhidrosis (PH) is a benign sympathetic disorder that can adversely affect the quality of life of patients. Thoracic sympathectomy (TS) at the T3 or T4 level has been used to treat PH. We aimed to determine the optimal denervation level for TS by comparing the efficacy of T3 TS versus T4 TS in PH patients. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies comparing T3 versus T4 TS for PH. Clinical end points included symptom resolution, patient satisfaction, and com

The influence of lightning induced voltage on the distribution power line polymer insulators.

Protection of medium voltage (MV) overhead lines against the indirect effects of lightning is an important issue in Malaysia and other tropical countries. Protection of these lines against the indirect effects of lightning is a major concern and can be improved by several ways. The choice of insulator to be used for instance, between the glass, ceramic or polymer, can help to improve the line performance from the perspective of increasing the breakdown strength. In this paper, the electrical performance of a 10 kV polymer insulator under different conditions for impulse, weather and insulator

Modelling of growth kinetics of Vibrio cholerae in presence of gold nanoparticles: effect of size and morphology.

Emergence of multiple drug resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria calls for new initiatives to combat infectious diseases. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), because of their non-toxic nature and size/shape dependent optical properties, offer interesting possibility. Here we report the antibacterial efficacy of AuNPs of different size and shape (AuNS10, AuNS100 and AuNR10; the number indicating the diameter in nm; S stands for sphere and R for rod) against the classical (O395) and El Tor (N16961) biotypes of Vibrio cholerae, the etiological agent responsible for cholera. A novel method of artery stenosis diagnosis using transfer function and support vector machine based on transmission line model: A numerical simulation and validation study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transfer function (TF) is an important parameter for the analysis and understanding of hemodynamics when arterial stenosis exists in human arterial tree. Aimed to validate the feasibility of using TF to diagnose arterial stenosis, the forward problem and inverse problem were simulated and discussed. METHODS: A calculation method of TF between ascending aorta and any other artery was proposed based on a 55 segment transmission line model (TLM) of human artery tree. The effects of artery stenosis on TF were studied in two aspects: stenosis degree and position. The degr

Synthetic lepidocrocite for phosphorous removal from reclaimed water: optimization using convex optimization method and successive adsorption in fixed bed column.

The batch and column experimental studies on the adsorption of phosphate onto synthetic lepidocrocite from reclaimed water are presented. A second-order polynomial model in the batch study is successfully applied to describe phosphate immobilization performance using the response surface methodology. The model proposed is further linked with the convex optimization method to determine the optimal variables for maximum phosphate uptake since convex method is a global optimization method. Consequently, under optimal parameters determined as pH of 3.88, an initial P concentration of 0.66 mg/L, an

Defining and estimating causal direct and indirect effects when setting the mediator to specific values is not feasible.

Natural direct and indirect effects decompose the effect of a treatment into the part that is mediated by a covariate (the mediator) and the part that is not. Their definitions rely on the concept of outcomes under treatment with the mediator 'set' to its value without treatment. Typically, the mechanism through which the mediator is set to this value is left unspecified, and in many applications, it may be challenging to fix the mediator to particular values for each unit or patient. Moreover, how one sets the mediator may affect the distribution of the outcome. This article introduces 'organ

The potential usefulness of human leukocyte antigen typing for celiac disease screening: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The presence of specific human leukocyte antigen-DQ2 and DQ8 seems to be necessary for celiac disease development, but the real contribution of its typing for screening is still uncertain. We aim to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic performance of human leukocyte antigen typing tests for celiac disease screening. METHODS: Systematic review of published studies assessing accuracy of human leukocyte antigen DQ2 and DQ8 typing for the detection of celiac disease were selected. A novel neural-inspired learning algorithm with application to clinical risk prediction.

Clinical risk prediction - the estimation of the likelihood an individual is at risk of a disease - is a coveted and exigent clinical task, and a cornerstone to the recommendation of life saving management strategies. This is especially important for individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) given the fact that it is the leading causes of death in many developed counties. To this end, we introduce a novel learning algorithm - a key factor that influences the performance of machine learning-based prediction models - and utilities it to develop CVD risk prediction tool. This novel neur

A hybrid model for predicting the prevalence of schistosomiasis in humans of Qianjiang City, China.

BACKGROUNDS/OBJECTIVE: Schistosomiasis is still a major public health problem in China, despite the fact that the government has implemented a series of strategies to prevent and control the spread of the parasitic disease. Advanced warning and reliable forecasting can help policymakers to adjust and implement strategies more effectively, which will lead to the control and elimination of schistosomiasis. Our aim is to explore the application of a hybrid forecasting model to track the trends of the prevalence of schistosomiasis in humans, which provides a methodological basis for predicting and

Improvement of disease prediction and modeling through the use of meteorological ensembles: human plague in Uganda.

Climate and weather influence the occurrence, distribution, and incidence of infectious diseases, particularly those caused by vector-borne or zoonotic pathogens. Thus, models based on meteorological data have helped predict when and where human cases are most likely to occur. Such knowledge aids in targeting limited prevention and control resources and may ultimately reduce the burden of diseases. Paradoxically, localities where such models could yield the greatest benefits, such as tropical regions where morbidity and mortality caused by vector-borne diseases is greatest, often lack high-qua

Artemisinin-induced parasite dormancy: a plausible mechanism for treatment failure.

BACKGROUND: Artemisinin-combination therapy is a highly effective treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria but parasite recrudescence has been commonly reported following artemisinin (ART) monotherapy. The dormancy recovery hypothesis has been proposed to explain this phenomenon, which is different from the slower parasite clearance times reported as the first evidence of the development of ART resistance. METHODS: In this study, an existing P. falciparum infection model is modified to incorporate the hypothesis of dormancy. Published in vitro data describing the characteristics of dorm

The role of aquatic reservoir fluctuations in long-term cholera patterns.

We propose and analyze an important extension of standard cholera epidemiological models, explicitly accounting for fluctuations of water availability to the human community under study. The seasonality of water input in the reservoir drives the variation of concentration of Vibrio cholerae. Two compartments are added to the Susceptible-Infected-Bacteria model. First, the recovered individuals, which, over many seasons, lose their immunity to the disease and replenish the Susceptible group. Second, the water volume of the reservoir, which determines bacterial dilution and, consequently, the pr

Formal reasoning on qualitative models of coinfection of HIV and Tuberculosis and HAART therapy.

BACKGROUND: Several diseases, many of which nowadays pandemic, consist of multifactorial pathologies. Paradigmatic examples come from the immune response to pathogens, in which cases the effects of different infections combine together, yielding complex mutual feedback, often a positive one that boosts infection progression in a scenario that can easily become lethal. HIV is one such infection, which weakens the immune system favouring the insurgence of opportunistic infections, amongst which Tuberculosis (TB). The treatment with antiretroviral therapies has shown effective in reducing mortali
