Automatic motion analysis system for pyloric flow in ultrasonic videos.

Ultrasonography has been widely used to evaluate duodenogastric reflux (DGR). But to the best of our knowledge, no automatic analysis system was developed to realize the quantitative computer-aided analysis. In this paper, we propose a system to perform the automatic detection of DGR in the ultrasonic image sequences by applying the automatic motion analysis. The motion field is estimated based on image velocimetry. Then, an intelligent motion analysis is applied. For the DGR detection, the motion and structural information is combined to analyze the transploric motion of the fluid. In order t…

Precursors of post-bout motion sickness in adolescent female boxers.

Athletic head trauma (both concussive and sub-concussive) is common among adolescents. Head trauma often is followed by motion sickness-like symptoms, by changes in cognitive performance, and by changes in standing body sway. We evaluated adolescent female boxers who did and did not report motion sickness after a bout (i.e., a boxing match), together with a control group of non-boxers. We asked whether pre-bout body sway would differ between boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not. In addition, we asked whether pre-bout cognitive performance would differ between …

Motion perception without Nystagmus--a novel manifestation of cerebellar stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The motion perception and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) each serve distinct functions. The VOR keeps the gaze steady on the target of interest, whereas vestibular perception serves a number of tasks, including awareness of self-motion and orientation in space. VOR and motion perception might abide the same neurophysiological principles, but their distinct anatomical correlates were proposed. In patients with cerebellar stroke in distribution of medial division of posterior inferior cerebellar artery, we asked whether specific location of the focal lesion in vestibulocerebellum c…

Why do adults with dyslexia have poor global motion sensitivity?

Two experiments aimed to determine why adults with dyslexia have higher global motion thresholds than typically reading controls. In Experiment 1, the dot density and number of animation frames presented in the dot stimulus were manipulated because of findings that use of a high dot density can normalize coherence thresholds in individuals with dyslexia. Dot densities were 14.15 and 3.54 dots/deg(2). These were presented for five (84 ms) or eight (134 ms) frames. The dyslexia group had higher coherence thresholds in all conditions than controls. However, in the high dot density, long duration …

Does 3D produce more symptoms of visually induced motion sickness?

3D stereoscopy technology with high quality images and depth perception provides entertainment to its viewers. However, the technology is not mature yet and sometimes may have adverse effects on viewers. Some viewers have reported discomfort in watching videos with 3D technology. In this research we performed an experiment showing a movie in 2D and 3D environments to participants. Subjective and objective data are recorded and compared in both conditions. Results from subjective reporting shows that Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is significantly higher in 3D condition. For objective …

OBJECTIVE: Synkinetic facial movement after facial nerve regeneration is a well-documented phenomenon. Rarely, patients recovering from faci … ear, corresponding to a measured decrease of 10 dB in the PTA. Over the next several months, facial motion continued to improve, and hearing changes became less bothersome, so no intervention was undertaken. CONCLUSION: The changes presented in the hearing threshold fit within the classically described 15-dB attenuation provided by the stapedial reflex. …

Evaluation of preoperative hip range of motion under general anaesthesia.

Hip range of motion (ROM) may be an important preoperative variable, however, measurement of hip ROM can be affected by various factors. The purposes of this study were to compare conventional preoperative ROM measurements with those measurements obtained under general anaesthesia, and to better define the associations between preoperative hip ROM, and demographic, functional, and diagnostic variables.
Conventional preoperative hip ROM and ROM under general anaesthesia were prospectively measured in 471 hips. Harris pain score, the Crowe classification, and the diagnosis were also investigated…

Multilevel oblique corpectomy for cervical spondylotic myelopathy preserves segmental motion.

PURPOSE: To document the neurological outcome, spinal alignment and segmental range of movement after oblique cervical corpectomy (OCC) for … ge in spine curvature. None developed spinal instability. CONCLUSIONS: The OCC preserves segmental motion in the short-term, however, the tendency towards straightening of the spine, albeit without clinical worsening, warrants serial follow-up imaging to determine whether this motion preservation is long lasting.

Prolonged reduction of motion sickness sensitivity by visual-vestibular interaction.

The angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were elicited simultaneously at low frequencies to study effects of habituation of the velocity storage time constant in the vestibular system on motion sickness. Twenty-nine subjects, eleven of whom were susceptible to motion sickness from common transportation, were habituated by sinusoidal rotation at 0.017 Hz at peak velocities from 5 to 20°/s, while they watched a full-field OKN stimulus. The OKN stripes rotated in the same direction and at the same frequency as the subjects, but at a higher velocity. This produced…

Heart rate variability and motion sickness during forklift simulator driving.

The goal of the study was to determine the effect of a 1-h hour long forklift truck virtual simulator driving on the mechanism of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation in operators. The participants were divided into 2 subgroups: subjects with no definite inclination to motion sickness (group A) and subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness (group B). Holter monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was carried out in all subjects during the virtual simulator driving. For 12 consecutive epochs of ECG signal, HR variability analysis was conducted in time and frequency domains. I…

Various anti-motion sickness drugs and core body temperature changes.

INTRODUCTION: Blood flow changes and inactivity associated with motion sickness appear to exacerbate the rate of core temperature decrease during subsequent body cooling. We investigated the effects of various classes of anti-motion sickness drugs on core temperature changes. METHODS: There were 12 healthy male and female subjects (20-35 yr old) who were given selected classes of anti-motion sickness drugs prior to vestibular Coriolis cross coupling induced by graded yaw rotation and periodic pitch-forward head movements in the sagittal plane. All subjects were then immersed in water at 18 de…

Radical posterior capsulectomy improves sagittal knee motion in crouch gait.

BACKGROUND: Knee flexion contracture leading to crouch gait is commonly seen in children with myelomeningocele. Progressive increase in knee flexion contracture increases energy cost, which interferes with efficient, functional ambulation. To prevent this, surgical release has been recommended when a knee flexion contracture exceeds 15° to 20°. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore asked whether knee flexion contracture release improved dynamic sagittal motion and walking velocity using computerized gait analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 11 patients (20 knees) with high-s…

Spatially asymmetric reorganization of inhibition establishes a motion-sensitive circuit.

Spatial asymmetries in neural connectivity have an important role in creating basic building blocks of neuronal processing. A key circuit module of directionally selective (DS) retinal ganglion cells is a spatially asymmetric inhibitory input from starburst amacrine cells. It is not known how and when this circuit asymmetry is established during development. Here we photostimulate mouse starburst cells targeted with channelrhodopsin-2 (refs 6-8) while recording from a single genetically labelled type of DS cell. We follow the spatial distribution of synaptic strengths between starburst and DS

Patching cardiac and head motion artefacts in diffusion-weighted images.

Motion artefacts are an important but often disregarded problem in diffusion-weighted imaging, which can readily lead to corrupt diffusion model estimations. The new processing method proposed in this paper uses robust tensor estimation that is spatially informed to efficiently detect the most frequently occurring artefacts, namely those that result from head and cardiac motion. Simulations demonstrate that the method is more robust and accurate than previous methods. The tensor estimates are more accurate in motion artefact-free conditions, less sensitive to increases in artefact magnitude an…

3D surface perception from motion involves a temporal-parietal network.

Previous research has suggested that three-dimensional (3D) structure-from-motion (SFM) perception in humans involves several motion-sensitive occipital and parietal brain areas. By contrast, SFM perception in nonhuman primates seems to involve the temporal lobe including areas MT, MST and FST. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study compared several motion-sensitive regions of interest including the superior temporal sulcus (STS) while human observers viewed horizontally moving dots that defined either a 3D corrugated surface or a 3D random volume. Low-level stimulus features …

Cortical Membrane Potential Dynamics and Laminar Firing during Object Motion.

When an object is introduced moving in the visual field of view, the object maps with different delays in each of the six cortical layers in … utation of a spatially restricted pre-depolarization (SRP), and firing in the direction of cortical motion prior to the mapping of the bar. After 350 ms, the representations of the bar (peak firing and peak VSD signal) in areas 19/21 and 17/18 moved over the cortex in phase. The dynamics comprise putative mechanisms for automatic saliency of novel moving …

Motion sickness in pilot trainees: management to keep them flying.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness is a recurrent problem in pilot schools. Many techniques to overcome motion sickness are used worldwide, mostly including sedative medication and psychotherapy. Motion sickness does not correlate with future pilot skills: it should not be a criterion for selection of candidates. The problem must be controlled from the onset in an objective way. In the Swiss Air Force selection program, time compression does not allow any delay between the selection flights, nor can drugs be used. METHODS: We created an after-flight motion sickness checklist. We present a descript…

Nauseogenicity of off-vertical axis rotation vs. equivalent visual motion.

INTRODUCTION: Off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) provokes motion sickness. The visual motion equivalent to OVAR in simulators is also nauseogenic. Our experiment compared the nauseogenicity of OVAR vs. visual motion. METHODS: There were 12 subjects who undertook the following conditions: A) OVAR in darkness at 0.2 Hz, 18 degrees tilt; B) same OVAR with eyes open in the light; and C) stationary, seated upright, watching a video of the visual motion experienced in B. The conditions were counterbalanced and performed at the same time of day with a minimum 5-d separation between conditions. Stimul…

Neural correlates of visually induced self-motion illusion in depth.

Optic-flow fields can induce the conscious illusion of self-motion in a stationary observer. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to reveal the differential processing of self- and object-motion in the human brain. Subjects were presented a constantly expanding optic-flow stimulus, composed of disparate red-blue dots, viewed through red-blue glasses to generate a vivid percept of three-dimensional motion. We compared the activity obtained during periods of illusory self-motion with periods of object-motion percept. We found that the right MT+, precuneus, as well as areas located …
