Heat acclimation does not reduce the impact of hyperthermia on central fatigue.

We tested the hypothesis that improved physiological symptoms of passively induced heat acclimation (HA) might impair the impact of hyperthermia on central fatigue and consequently cause greater peripheral fatigue. Subjects in the experimental group (7 males and 6 females) completed seven sessions of HA involving passive heating of the lower body by immersion up to the waist in a water bath at approximately 44 degrees C (air T 23 degrees C, rh 40%) for 45 min, repeated every other day for 2 weeks. During the first and the last HA sessions, participants performed a 2-min MVC of the knee extenso

Shoulder Kinematic and Muscle Activity Compensations to Scapular Stabilizer Weakness: An Optimal Control Framework.

PURPOSE: Shoulder kinematic and muscular redundancy promotes considerable variability, obscuring possible insights into neuromuscular control and compensation mechanisms for muscle weakness or fatigue. The current study harnessed recent advancements in optimal control formulations for computational musculoskeletal models to determine potential neuromuscular control strategies to compensate for isolated muscle weakness. METHODS: A computational shoulder model characterized by independent clavicular, scapular, and humeral kinematics and 138 muscle elements was used. Optimal control-predicted th

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Integrative Neuromuscular Training for Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often exhibit early deficits in muscle and movement competence, which can compromise long-term health. Integrative neuromuscular training (INT), a multifaceted approach combining fundamental movement activities with strength exercises, may help address these deficits during critical developmental periods. METHODS: Eight children treated for ALL (aged 6-12 years) completed a supervised INT intervention (2 sessions/week for 8 weeks). Primary outcomes were feasibility (recruitment, retention, adherence, compliance, and toleran

Adaptations to fatigue during a repetitive multiplanar lifting task.

Warehouse workers are often required to perform physically demanding repetitive lifting tasks leading to fatigue. Previous research has primarily focused on constrained lifting tasks when investigating fatigue. The purpose of the current study was to investigate fatigue-based movement adaptations during a multiplanar, ecologically relevant lifting task. Participants (n = 28) lifted, transferred, and lowered a mass continuously for 60 min. Full body kinematics and muscle activity of the lumbar erector spinae, rectus abdominis, external oblique, and anterior deltoids were collected continuously.

Thyroarytenoid Muscle Avulsion.

Thyroarytenoid muscle avulsion is a rare condition in which laryngeal trauma causes a separation of the thyroarytenoid muscle from the arytenoid cartilage. Typically, symptoms are nonspecific but include severe dysphonia and voice fatigue. They are similar to symptoms of vocal process avulsion. Strobovideolaryngoscopy, laryngeal electromyography, and laryngeal computed tomography may be helpful in diagnosis. However, intraoperative palpation under general anesthesia is the most definitive way to establish its diagnosis. We present two cases of thyroarytenoid muscle avulsion, a condition that h

Myopathy as a first symptom of Huntington's disease in a Marathon runner.

A semi professional marathon runner at risk for Huntington's disease (HD) (43 CAG repeats) developed signs of a slowly progressive myopathy with exercise-induced muscle fatigue, pain, elevated creatine kinase level, and worsening of his running performance many years before first signs of chorea were detected. Muscle biopsy displayed a mild myopathy with mitochondrial pathology including a complex IV deficiency and analysis of the patient's fibroblast culture demonstrated deficits in mitochondrial function. Challenging skeletal muscle by excessive training might have disclosed myopathy in HD e…

Factors associated with reduction in quality of life after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Long-term changes in health-related quality of life (HrQoL) after SARS-CoV-2 infection are common, but their causes and consequences are poorly understood. This prospective, population-based study examined associations between HrQoL and 49 demographic and clinical variables. HrQoL was assessed using the European Quality-of-Life-5-Dimensions-5-Level-Version in 3,475 participants (56% female; aged 18-88 years) approximately 9 months (baseline) and 26 months (follow-up) after their initial infection. Results were compared with the demographic and clinical variables using recursive feature elimina

Protective effect of PNQX on motor units and muscle property after sciatic nerve crush in neonatal rats.

Sciatic nerve injury in neonatal rats results in significant reduction in the number of surviving motoneurons and impairs muscle development. We examined the possible neuroprotective effects of daily in vivo administration of 1,4,7,8,9,10-hexahydro-9-methyl-6-nitropyrido[3,4-f]quinoxaline-2,3-dione (PNQX), an AMPA/kainate receptor antagonist, on sciatic nerve injured rats, during the period of plasticity of the rat nervous system. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of PNQX on muscle properties impaired by nerve crush. At the second postnatal day, the sciatic nerve of the rat left hind lim

Nutrient Therapy for the Improvement of Fatigue Symptoms.

Fatigue, characterised by lack of energy, mental exhaustion and poor muscle endurance which do not recover following a period of rest, is a common characteristic symptom of several conditions and negatively impacts the quality of life of those affected. Fatigue is often a symptom of concern for people suffering from conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Vitamins and minerals, playing essential roles in a variety of basic metabolic pathways that support fundamental cellular functions, may be important in mitigating physical and mental fatigue

Physiological alterations of motor units in hemiplegia.

Isometric contractions of single motor units in the first dorsal interosseous muscle were recorded with an intramuscular microstimulation technique in patients with short- or long-term hemiplegia and compared with controls. In the hemiplegic patients motor units could be classified as in controls, utilizing twitch contraction time and fatigue sensitivity, as FF (fast fatigable), FR (fast fatigue resistant) and S (slow fatigable). The mean twitch contraction time of fast-twitch but not slow-twitch units was slightly prolonged in patients with spastic hemiplegia and motor units, especially type

Comparison of canine skeletal muscle power from twitches and tetanic contractions in untrained muscle: a preliminary report.

Power output and blood flow were determined in dogs for four muscles (gastrocnemius, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, and triceps) to det … and triceps tolerate stretching much better. We conclude that power can be improved without causing muscle fatigue by choice of muscle, choice of electrical stimulation parameters, linear geometry for contraction of the muscle, and matching the force load to each individual muscle.

Strabismus and eye muscle function.

Studies of external eye muscle morphology and physiology are reviewed, with respect to both motor and sensory functions in concomitant strabismus. The eye muscles have a more complex fibre composition than other striated muscle, and they are among the fastest and most fatigue-resistant muscles in the body. However, it is not generally believed that concomitant strabismus is due to a primary abnormality of the eye muscles or the ocular motor system. The gross anatomy of eye muscles, including the shape and position of the eye muscle pulleys, was not changed in strabismus. The histology of the e

Skeletal muscle function during the progression of cancer cachexia in the male ApcMin/+ mouse.

While cancer-induced skeletal muscle wasting has been widely investigated, the drivers of cancer-induced muscle functional decrements are only beginning to be understood. Decreased muscle function impacts cancer patient quality of life and health status, and several potential therapeutics have failed in clinical trials due to a lack of functional improvement. Furthermore, systemic inflammation and intrinsic inflammatory signaling's role in the cachectic disruption of muscle function requires further investigation. We examined skeletal muscle functional properties during cancer cachexia and det
