PURPOSE: The digastric branch is the second branch of the facial nerve after emerging from the stylomastoid foramen. To the best of our knowledge, few detailed anatomic studies of the digastric branch have been performed. Moreover, the use of the digastric branch for facial nerve reanimation has not been explored.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine sides of 5 fresh frozen cadavers were dissected for anatomic observation of the digastric branch and exploration of the feasibility of the digastric branch as a donor for facial nerve reanimation. The facial nerve trunk (FNT) and digastric branch were rea

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for lateral cervical recurrence of metastatic thyroid carcinoma compared to revision surgery (after a primary thyroidectomy and selective neck dissection) and RFA in the central compartment or thyroid bed. This review focuses on studies that differentiate between lateral and central neck RFA, as lesion location might influence outcomes and complication rates.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines, looking at articles that address management of thyroid cancer recurrence in the lateral nec…

INTRODUCTION: The posterior cervical triangle houses an important nodal basin in the spread of several cancers in the head and neck, particularly cutaneous malignancies of the scalp. A safe and effective Level V neck dissection necessitates thorough understanding of the neurovascular structures housed within the region. Conventional 2D anatomical representations offer insights into the named structures, but fall short in illustrating the spatial relationships crucial in surgery. Here, we aim to develop an anatomically-precise 3D virtual model of the posterior cervical triangle and its constitu…

We describe the case of a 68-year-old man who presented with an anterior floor of mouth squamous cell carcinoma and underwent bilateral neck dissection. Subsequently, the patient developed permanent bilateral hypoglossal palsies, causing significant dysphagia, dysarthria and breathing difficulties. Hypoglossal nerve damage from surgical causes is uncommon, occurring in only 0.42% of functional neck dissections. However, it is the bilateral and permanent features of this case which make it unique. This injury may have been caused by incorrect use of the Harmonic Focus scalpel. Therefore, we dis…

This article provides the facial plastic surgeon with anatomic and embryologic evidence to support the use of the deep-plane rhytidectomy for optimal treatment of the aging neck. An anatomic basis is established that demonstrates this technique's ability to maximize neck rejuvenation through its direct relationship to midface soft-tissue mobilization. A detailed description of the procedure, aimed at providing safe and consistent results, is presented with insights into anatomic landmarks, technical nuances, and alternative approaches to facial variations.

OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS)-guided sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB) of the head and neck in a porcine model.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: In this prospective, nonrandomized study, methylene blue and Sonazoid were injected into the lateral tongue or floor of mouth (FOM) of four swine. Real-time CEUS was used to identify contrast in the lymphatic channels flowing to the sentinel lymph node (SLN). Endoscopic or open SNB was performed. Neck dissection was then performed, and the residual nodal packet was examined for remaining contrast-enhancing or blue …

BACKGROUND: The relative delay in the development of endoscopic neck surgery has been attributed to the relatively narrow operative field and to the presence of many vital structures in it. For endoscopic neck surgery to be feasible, it is essential to create a comfortable working space. A method of creating a working space is the gasless skin-lifting technique. To date, there have been only few reports on the transcervical endoscopic approach to the submandibular gland.
AIM: Assessment of a new modification in the technique of video-assisted submandibular sialadenectomy aiming at improving t

A thorough knowledge of parathyroid embryology and anatomy is essential for maximum success in restoration of calcium homeostasis in those patients who have a form of hyperparathyroidism. In fact, an initial meticulous neck dissection by a competent parathyroid surgeon who is well versed in the embryology and anatomy of the neck is the current "hi tech" method of choice for parathyroid gland localization.

This case describes the first documented clinical presentation of Sweet's syndrome with unilateral swelling of the neck, severe pain and fever. The clinical and radiological manifestation resembled necrotising fasciitis and the patient underwent acute neck dissection. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with a new subtype of Sweet's syndrome called necrotising Sweet's syndrome, and quickly recovered after treatment with intravenous administration of prednisolone.

The case of a 6 week-old infant who presented with an anterior mediastinal mass that extended to the left neck is reported. During surgical dissection of the mass, the patient exhibited extreme hemodynamic instability consistent with a vasoactive tumor. The patient had a neuroblastoma with its origin in the posterior mediastinum, but with its mass effect in the anterior mediastinum and neck.

Submandibular gland suspension, a procedure designed to complement surgical rejuvenation of the aging neck, uses largely blunt dissection and suspension to the mandibular periosteum to elevate the gland, improving neck contour without excision of submandibular gland tissue. Although there is an increase in operative time, the risk of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding problems is very low, and the authors report high patient satisfaction.

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative hypoparathyroidism (HPT) is one of the most common complications in total thyroidectomy for thyroid carcinoma. Parathyroid glands (PTGs) are at risk of being damaged during total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection mainly due to inadvertent removal, interruption of the blood supply or hematoma formation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of our surgical procedure to preserve for parathyroid function retrospectively and to clarify the risk factors of HPT after total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-five patients …

The most common initial symptom of aortic dissection is chest pain. Other initial symptoms include pain in the neck, throat, abdomen and lower back, syncope, paresis, and dyspnoea. Headache as the initial symptom of aortic dissection has not been described previously. A 61-year-old woman with a history of migraine and arterial hypertension developed continuous bifrontal headache. Two hours later, right-sided thoracic pain and a diastolic murmur were suggestive of aortic dissection that was confirmed by echocardiography and subsequent surgery. The dissection commenced in the ascending aorta and
