Multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology and characterized by various clinical manifestations and multiple organ involvement. It has been reported in association with POEMS syndrome and can progress to Kaposi's sarcoma or malignant lymphoma. The disease runs a more aggressive course and a poor prognosis. Optimal therapies have not been well established up to now. We here reported a case of rare MCD complicated with multiple myeloma who received bortezomib and achieved very good remission. To our knowledge, this is the first report on MCD

Isolated levocardia with situs inversus, or ILSI, is a rare anomaly with a reported incidence of 1:22,000 in the general population and from 0.4% to 1.2% of all patients with congenital heart diseases. It is commonly associated with both congenital heart disease and splenic abnormalities, either asplenia or polysplenia. The prognosis is poor, and only about 5% to 13% of patients survive more than 5 years. The case described here, which had computed tomographic findings, is the first case reported with multiple malignancies associated with ILSI. This patient, at 73 years of age, is the second l

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) family lesions, and Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) are now classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) under the heading of histiocytic/dendritic cell neoplasms. Each disease may manifest as a focal lesion, as multiple lesions, or as a widespread aggressive systemic disease with visceral organ involvement. Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare systemic disease process of adults with limited cases in children. Challenges in diagnosis and novel disease presentations, including ALK-positive histiocytosis (a newly r

OBJECT: It has been suggested that synchronous brain metastases (that is, those occurring within 2 months of primary cancer diagnosis) are associated with a shorter survival time compared with metachronous lesions (those occurring more than 2 months after primary cancer diagnosis). In this study the authors used data obtained from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program to determine the incidence of synchronous brain metastases and length of survival of patients in a defined population of southeastern Michigan residents.
METHODS: Data obtained in 26

Primary intracranial myxofibrosarcoma is exceedingly rare, with less than 10 cases published. We present a case of a 23-year-old man with previous history of a primary low grade myxofibrosarcoma of the left parietal-occipital convexity resected in March 1999. He subsequently underwent several interventions for multiple local recurrent disease until March 2004. At that time, complete remission was documented. About 8 years later, in February 2012, the patient was admitted to the emergency room with refractory acute pulmonary oedema. On work up, sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia and

BACKGROUND: While it is not uncommon in patients with head and neck cancer to present with multiple metachronous primary neoplasms, rarely do these present as a singular mass composed of intertwined, histologically distinct malignant tumors. Sometimes referred to as collision tumors, these entities are poorly understood and only appear in a handful of case studies in the literature.
CASE REPORT: Here we present a 58-year-old male diagnosed with a human papillomavirus-related collision tumor consisting of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, as well as

BACKGROUND: In HIV-1-positive patients there have been no prospective studies that show an increase in cutaneous neoplasms.
OBJECTIVE: We observed HIV-1-positive patients to determine whether or not there was an increased incidence of cutaneous malignancies.
METHODS: A total of 724 HIV-1-positive patients were examined during a 36-month period for the development of cutaneous malignancies.
RESULTS: The most common cutaneous neoplasm found was Kaposi's sarcoma, especially in patients with late-stage disease. Basal cell carcinomas were the next most frequent tumor. We have also seen three mal

Extramedullary plasmactyoma is the solitary, soft tissue form of plasma cell neoplasm but lack the defining features of medullary or multiple myeloma. The diagnosis is difficult to make in routine practice setting due to the morphological and immunohistochemical overlap with plasmablastic lymphoma. We report a case of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma in a 52-year-old in the mandibular lingual gingiva and discuss its differential from plasmablastic lymphoma. The gingival mass regressed with primary radiotherapy.

We report the case of a 37-year-old, white male with a primary central nervous system lymphoma with multiple supra and infratentorial locations. The patient developed manifestations of intraocular inflammation secondary to the intracranial neoplasm (masquerade syndrome) and lymphocytopenia--with a low CD4 cell count--representing an immunodeficiency state which etiology was undiagnosed. The diagnosis of lymphoma was established by vitreous cytology. The patient died 10 months after the beginning of the symptoms.

A one-month-old infant boy was examined early in life because his mother had bilateral retinoblastoma and his father had bilateral microphthalmia. The ophthalmologist found his right eye was normal size with a coloboma of the iris, choroid, and retina. The left eye was microphthalmic with a coloboma of the uveal tract and retina. A vascularized fluffy white mass in the posterior pole was diagnosed clinically as a retinoblastoma. The tumor regressed with radiation. When the patient was four years of age, a large tumor was found in the region of the pineal recess, causing hydrocephalus and seizu

We report a case of a 77-year-old man presenting with bilateral hemothorax, hemoptysis, and multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules and lung infiltrates. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of a surgically resected nodule revealed epithelioid angiosarcoma, and the overall radiological and operative findings favored pulmonary origin. No other primary sites outside the thorax could be identified. The patient was planned for palliative chemotherapy, but his condition deteriorated, and he died before treatment could be initiated. Angiosarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive endothelial

Extramedullary plasmacytoma may originate in any organ, either as a primary tumor or as a facet of systemic multiple myeloma. These solid lesions most commonly affect the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract, skin, and lung. Primary plasmacytoma of the lymph node is a rare hematologic neoplasm, which usually manifests as an enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes with no evidence of any other plasma cell dyscrasia. A 56-year-old man was admitted, due to the presence of multiple palpable masses in the right cervical and submandibular areas. Surgical resection revealed

A patient with a metaplastic breast carcinoma as a second primary carcinoma after a renal pelvis neoplasm, an association not described before, is reported. Her first admission in October 1983 was due to a silent hematuria secondary to a mass in the right kidney. The histopathologic diagnosis was a grade II transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis without distant or regional lymph nodes metastasis. Four years later, a right upper and outer quadrant breast mass was detected. Malignant disease was diagnosed by needle biopsy, and a simple mastectomy (Madden type) was performed. The histolo

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory disorder that occurs as a consequence of immune dysregulation. HLH can be primary (familial or non-familial) or secondary to infection, autoimmune disease or malignancy. Malignancy-associated HLH is often accompanied by hematologic and lymphoid neoplasms. This report describes the case of a 3-year-old girl with an initial diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia who subsequently developed HLH during primary chemotherapy. She was admitted with a pulmonary infection, and initial blood tests showed thrombocytopenia

Neuromas are benign hyperplastic proliferations of normal peripheral nerve components. These can be associated with some genodermatoses, namely Cowden syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2B, especially when numerous lesions are present. Given the potential for malignancy (such as breast cancer, pheochromocytoma, and thyroid cancer) associated with these syndromes, other features indicative of either syndrome should be evaluated in patients presenting with multiple cutaneous neuromas. The evaluation should include a thorough family history and complete physical, dermatologic, and op

The clinicopathological and molecular features of synchronous parathyroid carcinoma (PC) and thyroid carcinoma in a male patient are presented. At 11, he received mantle field radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma. He had a 26-year adulthood history of recurrent nephrolithiasis treated five times with lithotripsy. At 52, he was referred to our clinic for hypercalcemia. Primary hyperparathyroidism was diagnosed (calcium: 3.46 mmol/L, parathormone: 150 pmol/L, preserved renal function, nephrolithiasis, and osteoporosis). Neck ultrasound revealed a 41 × 31 × 37 mm nodule in the left thyroid and small

A 76-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer and gastric cancer was referred to our hospital because of severe anemia. Computed tomography revealed peritoneal dissemination and lung metastasis. For diagnoses of cStage Ⅳa sigmoid cancer and cStage ⅣB gastric cancer, palliative laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and distal gastrectomy were planned in order to avoid tumor hemorrhage and intestinal obstruction. Intraoperative findings suggested cancer dissemination on the pelvic peritoneum, thus laparoscopic Hartmann's procedure and distal gastrectomy were performed. The final diagnosis was sigmoid colon c

We report a case of a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) presenting synchronously with a paraganglioma (PGL) in a Whipple reaction specimen. The patient was a 72-year-old female with a history of breast and vulvar cancer. The simultaneous occurrence of two synchronous tumours in the pancreas was striking. Due to the presence of PGL and multiple meta- and synchronous tumours, the patient was referred to genetic counselling. Tumour tissue from the vulvar carcinoma, the PDAC and the PGL was analysed by targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) of 161 cancer-related genes and by whole exome s

BACKGROUND: Double primary cancers have a low incidence rate, and synchronous hepatocellular carcinoma and gallbladder adenocarcinoma are rarely reported. Here, we report such a case- the 12th case of synchronous double primary cancers featuring HCC and GC, but the first case of neuroendocrine differentiation in the gallbladder.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old female was admitted to the hospital complaining of weakness and inappetence for six months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen indicated an 11 cm space-occupying lesion in the right lobe of the liver. Later, magn
