OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the survival outcomes and potential prognostic factors of patients with temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TBSCC) treated at our institution.
METHODS: We retrospectively included patients who were diagnosed with TBSCC between 2008 and 2019. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) method was used to describe overall survival (OS), and the association between baseline characteristics and prognoses was examined using Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: Fifty consecutive patients with TBSCC were included in this study. The results showed that patients with adv

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an integral part of the evaluation of local and regional disease in tongue squamous cell carcinoma prior to surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of MRI in assessing tumour dimensions, as well as the impact of the time-lag from diagnostic biopsy on the accuracy of MRI. The medical records of 64 patients with tongue carcinoma were reviewed retrospectively. Tumour maximum diameter and tumour depth of invasion were compared between pathology and MRI (T1- and T2-weighted). MRI-derived maximum tumour diameter and depth of invasion correlated

There are previous papers suggesting that floor of mouth (FOM) oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) metastasise earlier than other oral cavity subsites. This report further evaluates that hypothesis. Between February 2006 and December 2019, 825 patients underwent curative resection of OSCC. Data on nodal metastases and depth of invasion (DOI) of the primary tumour were collated. The relationship between tumour DOI and likelihood of nodal metastases was examined. A total of 203 patients had a FOM OSCC, 75 of which had nodal metastases. No difference was found in the incidence of, or correlation

BACKGROUND: Regional metastasis of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HNcSCC) can be seen in either parotid and/or cervical lymph nodes. The aim of this study was to assess whether there was a difference in prognosis between parotid and cervical nodal metastases.
METHODS: Patients with regional metastasis from HNcSCC were identified from an institutional database. Disease-specific (DSS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: Five hundred and thirty-five patients were identified with median follow-up

PURPOSE: The individualized prediction of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OC-SCC) is essential and should be as comprehensive as possible. The aim of this study was to identify new risk factors and develop nomograms comparing all anatomic sites of the oral cavity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. All patients with OC-SCC diagnosed from 2004 to 2015 were selected and divided into the training cohort and the validation cohort. Age, gender, race, marital status, primary site, tumor grade,

Distant metastases in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck are uncommon, and the incidence rises with neck node metastasis. The lung, liver, and bones are the common possible sites for distant metastasis. Cutaneous and cardiac metastases are extremely rare situations with aggressive behaviors and present in the late course of the disease. Here, we report a case of anterior tongue cancer with cutaneous, bone, cardiac, lung, and soft tissue of right suprascapular area metastases after a gap of 2 years of follow-up of completion of treatment with radical surgery and adjuvant concurrent ch

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm of presumed neuroendocrine origin, with aggressive behavior and poor prognosis, that tends to have an increased incidence among elderly Caucasians and immunosuppressed individuals. MCC is either associated with a clonal integration of the Merkel cell polyoma virus into the host genome or with genomic alterations caused by chronic UV exposure. Tumors of either carcinogenesis show epithelial, neuroendocrine, and B-lymphoid lineage markers. HIV-infected African albinos have a higher risk of developing skin cancers, including MCC, in compari

Spindle Cell Carcinoma (SpCC), also known as Sarcomatoid Carcinoma, is a rare and peculiar biphasic malignant neoplasm that occurs mainly in the upper aero-digestive tract, mostly in larynx. SCC accounts for 3% of all squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in the head and neck region. It is a rare variant of SCC which shows spindled or pleomorphic tumour cells simulating a true sarcoma. We present a case report of SpCC nasal cavity in a 50-year-old female patient, presented with intermittent epistaxis from left nasal cavity. On physical examination, the patient had an ulcero-exophytic type of mass in

BACKGROUND: While several studies have indicated that a margin status of < 1 mm should be classified as a positive margin in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC), there is a lack of extensive cohort studies comparing the clinical outcomes between patients with positive margins and margins < 1 mm.
METHODS: Between 2011 and 2020, we identified 18,416 Taiwanese OCSCC patients who underwent tumor resection and neck dissection. Of these, 311 had margins < 1 mm and 1013 had positive margins. To compare patients with margins < 1 mm and those with positive margins, a propensity score (PS)-matc

Most recent survival prediction has been based on TNM staging, which does not provide individualized information. However, clinical factors including performance status, age, sex, and smoking might influence survival. Therefore, we used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze various clinical factors to precisely predict the survival of patients with larynx squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). We included patients with LSCC (N = 1026) who received definitive treatment from 2002 to 2020. Age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, location of

OBJECTIVE: Positive surgical margins in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma are associated with cost escalation, treatment intensification, and greater risk of recurrence and mortality. The positive margin rate has been decreasing for cT1-T2 oral cavity cancer over the past 2 decades. We aim to evaluate positive margin rates in cT3-T4 oral cavity cancer over time, and determine factors associated with positive margins.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a national database.

BACKGROUND: The basicranial region lacks definite boundaries and includes various anatomical units. We developed a novel concept of the posterior oral anatomical complex (POAC) to identify these anatomical units in the basicranial region. OSCC with POAC involvement is termed posterior oral squamous cell carcinoma (POSCC) with poor prognosis. The principal aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anatomy unit resection surgery (AUSR) on patients with POSCC.
METHODS: A total of 120 POSCC patients who underwent radical surgical treatment were recruited for this study. These POSCC patients

BACKGROUND: Staging systems for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) produce inconsistent risk stratification.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify further prognostic parameters for better stratification.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the prognostic significance of clinicopathologic parameters of 230 patients who underwent primary excision of invasive cSCC of the head and neck (n = 115) and non-head and non-neck (n = 115) locations. In addition to known high-risk features, we analysed tumour nest shape, invasion pattern, lymphoid response pattern and tumour budding.

BACKGROUND: miRNA is one of the advanced epigenetic molecular markers correlating with lymph node metastasis in patients with Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Numerous published papers are showing correlation of miRNA with metastasis. There is a need to analyze and validate such correlation.
METHOD: English language literature in major databases from the last 20 years was searched using controlled vocabulary and keywords. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were followed for selection of studies. The quality assessment was done as per the QUADAS tool 2 by three independent reviewers.

OBJECTIVES: The presence of and the causative role of high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) is a subject of controversy in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The disagreement can be related to the misclassification of OSCC as oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and/or lack of standard detection methods. This study aimed to examine the presence of transcriptionally active high-risk HPV in a homogenous Norwegian cohort of primary and second primary OSCC of the mobile tongue (oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma-OTSCC).

The glenohumeral joint is the most mobile in humans. Of all the joints 50% of dislocations involve the shoulder, mostly young males. When the first dislocation occurs in a patient under 20 years age the risk for recurrent instability increases to 90%. Many techniques are available to reduce and stabilise the glenohumeral joint; in cases of anterior dislocations one of which is the famous Bristow's procedure, originally described in 1954 by Laterjet. The purpose of this study is was to determine the Functional Outcomes of the modified Bristow procedure. This retrospective review was conducted a
