Learning-Based Median Nerve Segmentation From Ultrasound Images For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Evaluation.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy. Ultrasound imaging (US) may help to diagnose and assess CTS, through the evaluation of median nerve morphology. To support sonographers, this paper proposes a fully-automatic deep-learning approach to median nerve segmentation from US images. The approach relies on Mask R-CNN, a convolutional neural network that is trained end-to-end. The segmentation head of Mask R-CNN is here evaluated with three different configurations, with the goal of studying the effect of the segmentation-head output resolution on the overall Mask R

An ensemble framework based on Deep CNNs architecture for glaucoma classification using fundus photography.

Glaucoma is a chronic ocular degenerative disease that can cause blindness if left untreated in its early stages. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (Deep CNNs) and its variants have provided superior performance in glaucoma classification, segmentation, and detection. In this paper, we propose a two-staged glaucoma classification scheme based on Deep CNN architectures. In stage one, four different ImageNet pre-trained Deep CNN architectures, i.e., AlexNet, InceptionV3, InceptionResNetV2, and NasNet-Large are used and it is observed that NasNet-Large architecture provides superior performance

Convolutional neural networks predict the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Theory and applications.

In this study, we aimed to detect paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes before they occur so that patients can take precautions before putting their and others' lives in potentially life-threatening danger. We used the atrial fibrillation prediction database, open data from PhysioNet, and assembled our process based on convolutional neural networks. Conventional heart rate variability features are calculated from time-domain measures, frequency-domain measures using power spectral density estimations, time-frequency-domain measures using wavelet transform, and nonlinear Poincaré plot measure

Enabling forward uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis in cardiac electrophysiology by reduced order modeling and machine learning.

We present a new, computationally efficient framework to perform forward uncertainty quantification (UQ) in cardiac electrophysiology. We consider the monodomain model to describe the electrical activity in the cardiac tissue, coupled with the Aliev-Panfilov model to characterize the ionic activity through the cell membrane. We address a complete forward UQ pipeline, including both: (i) a variance-based global sensitivity analysis for the selection of the most relevant input parameters, and (ii) a way to perform uncertainty propagation to investigate the impact of intra-subject variability on

An online, non-destructive method for simultaneously detecting chemical, biological, and physical properties of herbal injections using hyperspectral imaging with artificial intelligence.

Botanical drugs hold great potential to prevent and treat complex diseases. Quality control is essential in ensuring the safety, efficacy, and therapeutic consistency of these drug products. The quality of a botanical drug product can be assessed using a variety of analytical methods based on criteria that judge the identity, strength, purity, and potency. However, most of these methods are developed on separate analytical platforms, and few approaches are available for in-process monitoring of multiple quality properties in a non-destructive manner. Here, we present a hyperspectral imaging-ba

Objective and automated assessment of surgical technical skills with IoT systems: A systematic literature review.

The assessment of surgical technical skills to be acquired by novice surgeons has been traditionally done by an expert surgeon and is therefore of a subjective nature. Nevertheless, the recent advances on IoT (Internet of Things), the possibility of incorporating sensors into objects and environments in order to collect large amounts of data, and the progress on machine learning are facilitating a more objective and automated assessment of surgical technical skills. This paper presents a systematic literature review of papers published after 2013 discussing the objective and automated assessme

Exploiting lamina terminalis appearance and motion in prediction of hydrocephalus using convolutional LSTM network.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the lamina terminalis (LT) is crucial for non-invasive evaluation of the CSF diversion for the treatment of hydrocephalus. Together with deep learning algorithms, morphological and physiological analyses of the LT may play an important role in the management of hydrocephalus. AIM: We aim to show that exploiting the motion of LT can contribute to the evaluation of hydrocephalus using deep learning algorithms. METHODS: The dataset contains 61 True-fisp data with routine sequences 37 of which are labeled as 'hydrocephalus' and the others as 'normal condition'. A fiftee

Towards threshold invariance in defining hippocampal ripples.

Objective.Hippocampal ripples are transient neuronal features observed in high-frequency oscillatory bands of local field potentials (LFPs), and they occur primarily during periods of behavioral immobility and slow-wave sleep. Ripples have been defined based on mathematically engineered features, such as magnitudes, durations, and cycles per event. However, the 'ripple' could vary from laboratory to laboratory because their definition is subject to human bias, including the arbitrary choice of parameters and thresholds. In addition, LFPs are often influenced by myoelectric noise arising from a

Automated detection of artefacts in neonatal EEG with residual neural networks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To develop a computational algorithm that detects and identifies different artefact types in neonatal electroencephalography (EEG) signals. METHODS: As part of a larger algorithm, we trained a Residual Deep Neural Network on expert human annotations of EEG recordings from 79 term infants recorded in a neonatal intensive care unit (112 h of 18-channel recording). The network was trained using 10 fold cross validation in Matlab. Artefact types included: device interference, EMG, movement, electrode pop, and non-cortical biological rhythms. Performance was assessed by p

Development of a machine-learning based voice disorder screening tool.

OBJECTIVE: Early recognition and referral are crucial for voice disorder management. Limited availability of subspecialists, poor primary care awareness, and the need for specialized equipment impede effective care. Thus, there is a need for a tool to improve voice pathology screening. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) have shown promise in analyzing acoustic characteristics of phonation. However, few studies report clinical applications of MLAs for voice pathology detection. The objective of this study was to design and validate a MLA for detecting pathological voices. METHODS: A MLA was de

Design and Validation of a New Diagnostic Tool for the Differentiation of Pathological Voices in Parkinsonian Patients.

Pathological speech, in its many forms, is a symptom of numerous serious diseases affecting millions of people worldwide, including more than 10 million Parkinson patients. Here, a powerful method is proposed for detecting pathological speech, using a two-dimensional (2D) convolutional neural network (CNN). Spectrograms are extracted from voice recordings of healthy and Parkinson diagnosed patients, which are fed into the CNN architecture. The voice samples comprise a subset of the benchmark mobile Parkinson Disease (mPower) study. The proposed model achieves 98% accuracy in Parkinson detectio

Multi- class classification of breast cancer abnormalities using Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

The real cause of breast cancer is very challenging to determine and therefore early detection of the disease is necessary for reducing the death rate due to risks of breast cancer. Early detection of cancer boosts increasing the survival chance up to 8%. Primarily, breast images emanating from mammograms, X-Rays or MRI are analyzed by radiologists to detect abnormalities. However, even experienced radiologists face problems in identifying features like micro-calcifications, lumps and masses, leading to high false positive and high false negative. Recent advancement in image processing and dee

Deep Learning Algorithms for Interpretation of Upper Extremity Radiographs: Laterality and Technologist Initial Labels as Confounding Factors.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained to identify abnormalities on upper extremity radiographs achieved an AUC of 0.844 with a frequent emphasis on radiograph laterality and/or technologist labels for decision-making. Covering the labels increased the AUC to 0.857 (p = .02) and redirected CNN attention from the labels to the bones. Using images of radiograph labels alone, the AUC was 0.638, indicating that radiograph labels are associated with abnormal examinations. Potential radiographic confounding features should be considered when curating data for radiology CNN development.

Automatic Assessment Of Hip Effusion From MRI.

Joint effusion is a hallmark of osteoarthritis (OA) associated with stiffness, and may relate to pain, disability, and long-term outcomes. However, it is difficult to quantify accurately. We propose a new Deep Learning (DL) approach for automatic effusion assessment from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) using volumetric quantification measures (VQM). We developed a new multiplane ensemble convolutional neural network (CNN) approach for 1) localizing bony anatomy and 2) detecting effusion regions. CNNs were trained on femoral head and effusion regions manually segmented from 3856 images (63 pat

Lightweight deep neural networks for cholelithiasis and cholecystitis detection by point-of-care ultrasound.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Emergency physicians (EPs) frequently deal with abdominal pain, including that is caused by either gallstones or acute cholecystitis. Easy access and low cost justify point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) use as a first-line test to detect these diseases; yet, the detection performance of POCUS by EPs is unreliable, causing misdiagnoses with serious impacts. This study aimed to develop a machine learning system to detect and localize gallstones and to detect acute cholecystitis by ultrasound (US) still images taken by physicians or technicians for preliminary diagnoses. Identification of Snails and Schistosoma of Medical Importance via Convolutional Neural Networks: A Proof-of-Concept Application for Human Schistosomiasis.

In recent decades, computer vision has proven remarkably effective in addressing diverse issues in public health, from determining the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of diseases in humans to predicting infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we investigate whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can also demonstrate effectiveness in classifying the environmental stages of parasites of public health importance and their invertebrate hosts. We used schistosomiasis as a reference model. Schistosomiasis is a debilitating parasitic disease transmitted to humans via snail intermediate hosts. T

Prediction of stenosis behaviour in artery by neural network and multiple linear regressions.

Blood flow analysis in the artery is a paramount study in the field of arterial stenosis evaluation. Studies conducted so far have reported the analysis of blood flow parameters using different techniques, but the regression analysis is not adequately used. Artificial neural network is a nonlinear and nonparametric approach. It uses back-propagation algorithm for regression analysis, which is effective as compared to statistical model that requires a higher domain of statistics for prediction. In our manuscript, twofold analyses of data are done. First phase involves the determination of blood

Smart chest X-ray worklist prioritization using artificial intelligence: a clinical workflow simulation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to evaluate whether smart worklist prioritization by artificial intelligence (AI) can optimize the radiology workflow and reduce report turnaround times (RTATs) for critical findings in chest radiographs (CXRs). Furthermore, we investigate a method to counteract the effect of false negative predictions by AI-resulting in an extremely and dangerously long RTAT, as CXRs are sorted to the end of the worklist. METHODS: We developed a simulation framework that models the current workflow at a university hospital by incorporating hospital-specific CXR generation rates and repo
