[Physiology and methods for studying the baroreceptor reflex].

The baroreflex is of major importance for the moment-to-moment maintenance of arterial pressure particularly during orthostatic stress. Blood pressure increase stimulates the receptors e.g. in the carotid sinuses and the aortic arch, and rapidly increases the receptor discharge rate. Blood pressure decrease induces arrest of impulse transmission to the nucleus of the solitary tract. The impulses are modulated by the nucleus ambiguous, the rostral ventrolateral medulla, the dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve, parabrachial and paraventricular nuclei and other central structures. Blood pressure in

Quantitative analyses of thalamic and cortical origins of neurons projecting to the rostral and caudal forelimb motor areas in the cerebral cortex of rats.

On the basis of studies using intracortical microstimulation, the existence of rostrocaudally separate two forelimb representation areas has been inferred in the motor cortex of rats. They are termed caudal and rostral forelimb areas (CFA and RFA). In this study, it was confirmed first that RFA and CFA are located in cytoarchitectonically distinct areas (medial and lateral parts of agranular cortex, respectively). In the second part of this study, the distribution of thalamic and cortical neurons projecting to RFA and CFA was quantitatively compared by injections of small and relatively consta

Physiological evidence that the vestibular system participates in autonomic and respiratory control.

Electrical or natural stimulation of the vestibular system results in changes in blood pressure and respiratory motor output. An increase in excitatory drive on the sympathetic nervous system occurs during nose-up vestibular stimulation in cats; this response is appropriate to offset orthostatic hypotension that could result from nose-up body rotations during movements such as vertical climbing. In addition, transection of the vestibular nerves in anesthetized or awake cats compromises the ability to correct decreases in blood pressure that result from nose-up body tilt. The vestibular system

Daily patterns of running wheel activity in male anophthalmic mice.

Circadian rhythms are generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) and synchronized (entrained) to environmental light-dark cycles by the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT), a direct pathway from the retina to the suprachiasmatic nuclei. In anophthalmic mice, the optic primordia are resorbed between embryonic days 11.5 and 13, before retinal ganglion cells emerge. Thus the retinohypothalamic tract, which is the primary "zeitgeber" for circadian rhythms in sighted animals, never forms, and there is no retinal or photic input to the circadian system. We have used wheel running activity, a highly co

The role of the prefrontal cortex in self-consciousness: the case of auditory hallucinations.

Many patients with schizophrenia report hallucinations in which they hear voices talking to them or about them. Behavioural and physiological studies show that this experience is associated with processes occurring in auditory language systems associated with both the production and the reception of speech. I propose that hallucinations are experienced because patients have difficulty in distinguishing sensations caused by their own actions from those that arise from external influences. This distinction can be made by predicting the sensations that will result from executive commands (forward

Step phase-related excitability changes in spino-olivocerebellar paths to the c1 and c3 zones in cat cerebellum.

1. Chronically implanted microwires were used to record extracellular field potentials generated in the c1 and c3 zones in the cortex of lobules V and VI of the cerebellum by non-noxious stimuli delivered to the superficial radial nerve in the ipsilateral forelimb. Responses due to input via climbing fibre afferents were studied; their latency and other characteristics identified them as mediated mainly via the dorsal funiculus spino-olivocerebellar path (DF-SOCP). 2. Responses at individual sites were studied repeatedly with a range of stimulus intensities and during two different behaviours:

Infraorbital nerve block in neonates for cleft lip repair: anatomical study and clinical application.

Infraorbital nerve block in neonates is not well described although it has been suggested that bilateral infraorbital nerve block is the local analgesic technique of choice for early repair of cleft lip. The purpose of this study was to determine the location of the infraorbital nerve in neonatal cadavers and to identify clinically useful landmarks. Thirty infraorbital nerves were identified in 15 neonatal cadavers with a mean weight of 2.85 (SD 0.32) kg (range 2.45-3.5 kg) via an upper buccal sulcus incision. The mean distance from the infraorbital nerve to the base of the alae nasi was 7.7 (

Projections of individual Purkinje cells of identified zones in the flocculus to the vestibular and cerebellar nuclei in the rabbit.

The rabbit flocculus can be divided into five zones (zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and C2) with the use of acetylcholinesterase histochemistry. The projections of individual Purkinje cells in these zones to the vestibular and cerebellar nuclei were studied by using biocytin as an anterograde tracer. The zones were physiologically identified in terms of the Purkinje cell complex spike modulation occurring in response to optokinetic stimulation. In zones 1 and 3 neurons respond best to rotation about a horizontal axis that is close to perpendicular to the ipsilateral anterior semicircular canal, whereas in

T-cadherin expression delineates specific regions of the developing motor axon-hindlimb projection pathway.

T-cadherin is a unique member of the cadherin family anchored to the membrane by a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol moiety (Ranscht and Dours-Zimmermann, 1991). T-cadherin's distribution in the developing motor axon pathway was mapped by immunocytochemistry in the chick lumbosacral region as spinal neurons project to and innervate hindlimb muscle. On growing motor axons, T-cadherin was expressed biphasically. Initially, uniform T-cadherin expression occurred on motor neurons as they projected between the spinal cord and the base of the hindlimb (stage 21-24), and then decreased as the axons sorte

Neural projections of the pineal organ in the larval sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus L.) revealed by indocarbocyanine dye tracing.

The distribution of the central neural connections of the pineal organ of the larval sea lamprey was investigated by means of anterograde and retrograde tracing with the fluorescent lipophilic dye, DiI (1,1'-dioctadecyl 3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate). Pinealofugal projections are well developed in larvae, extending from the posterior commissure into the diencephalon and mesencephalon. Small numbers of neurons were retrogradely labelled in the transition zone between the diencephalon and the mesencephalic tegmentum. These cells may constitute the first pinealopetal system de

Thalamic connections of the second somatic sensory area in cats studied with anterograde and retrograde tract-tracing techniques.

The thalamic connections of the second somatosensory area in the anterior ectosylvian gyrus of cats have been investigated using the retrograde tracer horseradish peroxidase and the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin. Horseradish peroxidase was injected iontophoretically in several somatotopic zones of the second somatosensory area map of six cats. Sites of horseradish peroxidase delivery were identified preliminarily by recording with microelectrodes the responses of neurons to skin stimulation. Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin was iontophoretically injected within the ve

Projections of the ventral subiculum to the amygdala, septum, and hypothalamus: a PHAL anterograde tract-tracing study in the rat.

The projections of the ventral subiculum are organized differentially along the dorsoventral (or septotemporal) axis of this cortical field, with more ventral regions playing a particularly important role in hippocampal communication with the amygdala, bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (BST), and rostral hypothalamus. In the present study we re-examined the projection of the ventral subiculum to these regions with the Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHAL) method in the rat. The results confirm and extend earlier conclusions based primarily on the autoradiographic method. Projections from

Course of the fiber pathways to pons from parasensory association areas in the rhesus monkey.

The course of the fiber pathways to pons from parasensory association areas in the rhesus monkey was investigated by injection of tritiated amino acids and the technique of autoradiography. Results confirm the projection to pons from parasensory association areas in the temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes and extend these observations to include the posterior parahippocampal gyrus. The findings reveal that the white matter of the posterior limb of the internal capsule above the midpoint of the lateral geniculate nucleus, and at the medial aspect of the lateral geniculate nucleus, comprise

Brainstem facial-motor pathways from two distinct groups of stapedius motoneurons in the cat.

To determine the brainstem origins and axonal routes of stapedius motoneurons, we labeled motoneurons by injecting cat stapedius muscles with horseradish peroxidase. Some injections were made in normal cats and some in cats in which the middle segment of the internal facial genu had been cut. By tracing labeled axons and by comparing the locations of labeled cell bodies in normal and lesioned cats, we divided stapedius motoneurons into two groups: "perifacial" and "accessory." Perifacial stapedius motoneurons have cell bodies located around the motor nucleus of the facial nerve and axons which

[The role of adrenergic receptors in the realization of hypothalamic effects on the motor function of the digestive tract in hypophysectomized dogs].

Chronic experiments on hypophysectomized dogs with gastric and small intestinal fistulas as well as with hypothalamus-implanted electrodes have shown that blockade of alfa-adrenoreceptors by phentolamine increases the number of the excitatory motility responses while stimulating hypothalamic structures during rest of the gastrointestinal tract and decreases inhibitory effects of the stomach while stimulating hypothalamic structures during work of the digestive tract. The blockade of beta-adrenoreceptors by obsidan induces weakening of excitatory responses of the digestive tract and intensifica

Multiple feedback loops in the flying cockroach: excitation of the dorsal and inhibition of the ventral giant interneurons.

1. In a tethered cockroach (Periplaneta americana) whose wings have been cut back to stumps, it is possible to elicit brief sequences of flight-like activity by puffing wind on the animal's body. 2. During such brief sequences, rhythmic bursts of action potentials coming from the thorax at the wingbeat frequency, descend the abdominal nerve cord to the last abdominal ganglion (A6). This descending rhythm is often accompanied by an ascending rhythm (Fig. 2). 3. Intracellular recording during flight-like activity from identified ascending giant interneurons, and from some unidentified descending

Different interhemispheric transfer of kanji and kana writing evidenced by a case with left unilateral agraphia without apraxia.

Recent neuropsychological studies have revealed that the processing of kanji (the Japanese morphograms) and kana (the Japanese syllabograms) involves different intrahemispheric mechanisms. We describe a patient showing left unilateral agraphia without apraxia for kanji, but not for kana, who was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging as having a lesion of the posterior body of the corpus callosum. This patient indicates that different neural pathways are used for kanji and kana not only intrahemispherically, but also interhemispherically.

Cortico-cortical connections of the motor cortex in the brushtailed possum (Trichosurus vulpecula).

Cortico-cortical connections of motor cortex in the marsupial brushtailed possum were traced by making injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into two parts of motor cortex: the rostral agranular part which does not overlap somatosensory cortex, and the caudal part which does. Following injections in motor cortex, labelled neurons were observed on the same side of the brain within somatosensory areas 1 and 2 and in parietal cortex just caudal to S1, with most neurons in cortical Layers 2-4. Commissural connections were found in half of the experiments, with many labelled neurons in cortica
