Bioresorbable Scaffolds for Coronary Stenosis: When and How Based Upon Current Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: First-generation bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS), largely represented by the poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) ABSORB (Abbott Vascular, Temecula, Illinois, US), have demonstrated, in low to moderate lesion complexity, similar efficacy to current generation metallic drug-eluting stents. However, a trend toward more device thrombosis has been observed, especially when the scaffolds are used in off-label situations. In this review, we address the most relevant drawbacks of these devices and, based on the available scientific data, we visit the scenarios where there is more uncertainty ab

A Comprehensive Review of the Literature Supporting Recommendations From the Canadian Diabetes Association for the Use of a Plant-Based Diet for Management of Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is considered one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada, representing a serious public health concern. Thus, clinicians have begun targeting modifiable risk factors to manage type 2 diabetes, including dietary patterns such as a plant-based diets (PBDs). The Canadian Diabetes Association has included PBDs among the recommended dietary patterns to be used in medical nutrition therapy for persons with type 2 diabetes. To support knowledge translation, this review summarizes the current literature relating to PBDs and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, its clinical ap

[Observational Study Protocol: Management of Anemia in Allogeneic Bone Marrow Donors].

Bone marrow harvesting from healthy voluntary donors for related or unrelated allogeneic transplantation is considered a safe procedure. However, its associated hematologic impact is well recognized, including a decrease in hemoglobin levels, with a potential need for transfusion support. In accordance with the policies of several donation centers, donors provide one unit of autologous blood that is reinfused after bone marrow collection, thereby avoiding the risks associated with allogeneic transfusion. Nevertheless, this practice carries risks such as the development of pre-bone marrow harve

Unintended Prolonged Opioid Use: Protocol for a Case-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Misuse of prescription opioids remains a public health problem. Appropriate short-term use of these medications in opioid-naive patients is indicated in selected settings but can result in unintended prolonged opioid use (UPOU), defined as the continuation of opioid therapy beyond the period by which acute pain would have been expected to resolve. Clinical strategies aimed at preventing UPOU are lacking due to the absence of information about how this poorly understood clinical phenomenon actually develops. OBJECTIVE: In this research project, 3 Clinical and Translational Science

COVID-19 Vaccination Safety Profiles in Patients With Solid Tumour Cancers: A Systematic Review.

Vaccination has become an essential means of protection for solid tumour patients against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this systematic review, we sought to identify common safety profiles of the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with solid tumours. A search of Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane was conducted for studies in English full-text that reported side-effect data experienced by patients with cancer who were at least 12 years old with solid tumours or a recent history of solid tumours after receiving either one or multiple doses of the COVID-19 vaccination. Study quality

PsyNBIOsis: Investigating the Association between Maternal Gestational Diabetes, Mental Health, Diet and Childhood Obesity Risk: Protocol for a Prospective, Longitudinal, Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with poorer maternal mental health (depression and anxiety). Maternal mental health and GDM are likely to influence diet, which in turn impacts the course of GDM. Maternal diet may also be directly or indirectly associated with changes in infant anthropometry. The aims of this study are to (1) examine the associations between maternal GDM, mental health and diet, and (2) evaluate the associations between these maternal factors, breastmilk composition and infant anthropometry. METHODS: This prospective, observational, longitudinal c

Development and validation of diagnostic and prognostic prediction tools for dental caries in young children through prospective and cross-sectional observational studies: a protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is the most common oral disease worldwide, affecting up to 90% of children globally. It can lead to pain, infection and impaired quality of life. Early prevention is a key strategy for reducing the prevalence of dental caries in young children. Valid and reliable diagnostic or prognostic tools that enable accurate individualised prediction of current or future dental caries are essential for facilitating personalised caries prevention and early intervention. However, no efficacious tools currently exist in early childhood-the optimal period for disease prevention. W

Associations Between Poor Oral Health and Risk of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

PURPOSE: Many epidemiologic studies have reported an association of poor oral health, especially periodontal disease (PD) and tooth loss, with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). However, these studies have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, the present study investigated whether poor oral health is an independent predictor of SCCHN through a meta-analysis of observational studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for relevant observational studies of the association between oral health a

Association between sarcoidosis, pulse wave velocity, and other measures of subclinical atherosclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Chronic inflammation from autoimmune diseases has shown to be a risk factor for atherosclerosis, subsequently leading to cardiovascular disease. Endothelial dysfunction is the early pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in chronic inflammation, but the risk of atherosclerosis in sarcoidosis is less well defined. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the association of subclinical atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness in sarcoidosis. A comprehensive search of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases was performed from date of inception through August 2017. The inclusion criterion was observational studies eva

Prior autoimmune disease and risk of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and multiple myeloma: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Several observational studies have investigated autoimmune disease and subsequent risk of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma. Findings have been largely inconsistent and hindered by the rarity and heterogeneity of the autoimmune disorders investigated. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to evaluate the strength of the evidence linking prior autoimmune disease and risk of MGUS/multiple myeloma. METHODS: A broad search strategy using key terms for MGUS, multiple myeloma, and 50 autoimmune diseases was used to search four

Targeting inflammation in cardiometabolic disease: Icosapent ethyl modulates monocyte-derived macrophages isolated from patients with cardiovascular disease with or without type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: Despite intensive lipid-lowering therapy, individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) exhibit residual inflammatory risk, which drives recurrent cardiovascular events. This risk is amplified in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where a pro-inflammatory milieu accelerates atherogenesis. Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs), key mediators of vascular inflammation, contribute significantly to this process. Icosapent ethyl (IPE), a highly purified ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), reduces major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) beyond triglyceride lowering, yet

Including comparative observational evidence in trial-level surrogate endpoint evaluation: assessing relapse-free survival as a surrogate endpoint for overall survival in patients with acute myeloid leukemia post-transplant.

OBJECTIVES: Overall survival (OS) is the gold standard outcome for the assessment of treatment benefits in oncology trials. However, OS requires lengthy patient follow-up and can be confounded by competing risks. This study aims to assess the validity of relapse-free survival (RFS) as a trial-level surrogate end point for OS in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and develop novel methods to combine data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and comparative observational evidence (COE) studies. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A systematic review was conducted to identify RCTs and COE studies reporting
