Autoantibodies to nervous tissue structures are associated with autonomic neuropathy in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.

There is evidence that the immune system may play a role in the pathogenesis of autonomic neuropathy in Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. In the present study, we investigated the presence of autoantibodies to sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous structures and their correlation with other conventional autoantibodies in well-characterised diabetic populations, with or without diabetic neuropathy, and normal subjects. An indirect immunofluorescent complement-fixation technique was used, with monkey adrenal gland, rabbit cervical ganglia and vagus nerve as substrates. Of the patie

Peripheral neuroendocrinology of the cervical autonomic nervous system.

1. The sympathetic superior cervical ganglia (SCG) provide innervation to the pineal gland and median eminence through the internal carotid nerve and to the thyroid and parathyroid glands through the external carotid nerve. 2. Postsynaptic activation in median eminence nerve endings shortly after superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) was accompanied by a depression of LH and FSH release and by a 3-5 day delay in rat estrous cyclicity. A decrease in TSH and GH release and an increase in ACTH and prolactin release were also found. These effects were accompanied by a) an increase in medial basa

Effects of laughing and weeping on mood and heart rate variability.

We investigated the effects of laughing and weeping induced by watching comedy and tragedy videos on mood and autonomic nervous function. Ten healthy female subjects volunteered for the experiment. Chest electrocardiogram and respiration curve were recorded before, after, and during watching a comedy or a tragedy video. We also asked them to fill out profiles of mood states (POMS) to evaluate their mood states while watching videos. Autonomic nervous function was estimated by spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). All subjects more or less laughed and wept while watching comedy and

Does Virtual Reality Reduce Dental Treatment Stress in Patients With Dental Anxiety? A Comparison With Nitrous Oxide Sedation: A Crossover Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to compare the effects of virtual reality (VR) and nitrous oxide (N2O) sedation on anxiety and stress in patients with dental anxiety. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight patients with dental anxiety (five women; mean age, 41 years) with scores ≥ 19 on the Japanese version of the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale underwent three interventions: VR (natural landscapes and ambient music), N2O (30% N2O/70% oxygen), and no intervention (control). Autonomic nervous activity, including low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and the LF/HF ratio, was measured. VR significantly reduced LF a

[Description of the resting electrocardiogram in a series of patients with myasthenia gravis].

UNLABELLED: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease characterized by the presence of acetylcholine receptor-directed autoantibodies. Functional cardiac disorders are the most common since there is no neuro-muscular plate in the heart. Autonomic nervous system is involved in MG, but the cardiac manifestations of such an involvement remain unclear. Previous EKG studies in patients with MG show heterogeneous results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive and observational study was performed to know the main electrocardiographic characteristics and some autonomic nervous function in a s

[Lower urinary tract function and its disorders].

The lower urinary tract provides two modes of operation--storage and elimination of urine. The normal function results in the coordination of contraction and relaxation of muscles of the urinary bladder and urethral sphincters. Disorders of these activities or their interaction lead to the development of lower urinary tract dysfunctions. The nervous system plays an essential role in the regulation of the functions. The control of micturition is coordinated by several regious of the central nervous system. Afferents and efferents of the peripheral nervous system carry signals from and to the lo

Severe hypertension after atropine administration a case report.

Atropine, a cholinergic receptor antagonist, counteracts the parasympathetic nervous system's inhibitory effects on the sinus node, thereby increasing heart rate. It is frequently used to manage atrioventricular block, organophosphate and beta-blocker poisoning, and sinus bradycardia. This case report highlights a rare instance of hypertensive urgency induced by atropine administration, emphasizing the clinical significance of this adverse effect. We present a case report involving a 48-year-old male patient scheduled for right inguinal hernia surgery. The patient was administered atropine pri…

Vagal Stimulation and Arrhythmias.

I mbalance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems is probably the most prevalent autonomic mechanism underlying many a rrhythmias . Recently, vagus nerve stimulation ( VNS has emerged as a novel therapeutic modality to treat arrhythmias through its anti adrenergic and anti inflammatory actions . C linical trials applying VNS to the cervical vagus nerve in heart failure pati en ts yielded conflicting results, possibly due to limited understanding of the optimal stimulation parameters for the targeted cardiovascular diseases. Transcutaneous VNS by stimulating the auricular branch…

Cardiovascular Disorders Mediated by Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction.

Cardiovascular disorders, such as orthostatic hypotension and supine hypertension, are common in patients with neurodegenerative synucleinopathies such as Parkinson disease (PD), and may also occur in other conditions, such as peripheral neuropathies, that result in autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. Dysfunction and degeneration of the ANS are implicated in the development of orthostatic and postprandial hypotension and impaired thermoregulation. Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) results from sympathetic failure and is a common autonomic disorder in PD. Supine hypertension may

An in vivo guinea pig preparation for studying the autonomic regulation of airway smooth muscle tone.

The autonomic nervous system plays a primary role in regulating airway smooth muscle tone. Here, we describe the development of an in vivo guinea pig model that permits systematic studies of the autonomic control of airway smooth muscle. The model is based on preparations previously described and utilizes measurements of isometric tension in a perfused segment of extrathoracic guinea pig trachea in situ. It has the advantage that the autonomic innervation to the tracheal segment under study can be physiologically or pharmacologically isolated and studied independently from other mechanisms reg

Reduced cholinergic sinus node restraint in hyperthyroidism.

The role of the cholinergic nervous system in the tachycardia of hyperthyroidism was investigated in this study of dogs made severely thyrotoxic by the administration of Na-L-thyroxine over a six to nine month period. Differences in heart rate between control and thyrotoxic unanesthetized dogs could be abolished by cumulative doses of intravenous atropine both before and after beta-adrenergic blockade with propranolol, and at submaximal as well as maximal heart rates. There were no differences in the heart rate response of control and thyrotoxic anesthetized dogs to vagal stimulation or to the

The role of neuropeptides in adverse myocardial remodeling and heart failure.

In addition to traditional neurotransmitters of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the heart also contains numerous neuropeptides. These neuropeptides not only modulate the effects of neurotransmitters, but also have independent effects on cardiac function. While in most cases the physiological actions of these neuropeptides are well defined, their contributions to cardiac pathology are less appreciated. Some neuropeptides are cardioprotective, some promote adverse cardiac remodeling and heart failure, and in the case of others their functions are unclear. Some have both card…

Cardiac electrophysiology of patients with spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is a clinical syndrome encountered frequently in trauma centers and is accompanied by both acute and chronic heart rhythm abnormalities. The injury is characterized by sympathetic nervous system impairment with preservation of parasympathetic output via the vagus nerve. Severe bradycardia in the form of life-threatening sinus arrest or complete heart block may be observed in the acute recovery phase. Therapy for arrhythmias in the acute phase includes atropine, intravenous chronotropes, methylxanthines for the prevention of episodic bradycardia, and pacemaker implantation in

State of the peripheral nervous system in patients with hypothalamic insufficiency.

An investigation was carried out by non-invasive techniques of the state of the peripheral nervous system in patients with a constitutional-acquired form of hypothalamic insufficiency. Ten healthy individuals were included in the control group. The presence of subclinical parasympathetic vegetative insufficiency was identified by cardiovascular tests. It was more marked in patients with an early onset of the neuroendocrine disturbances and longer course of the disease. In the opinion of the authors, this suggests the constitutional-acquired character of the vegetative disturbances. In addition

Micturitional disturbance in radiation myelopathy.

Detailed micturitional histories and urodynamic studies were performed in five patients with radiation myelopathy. All patients had micturitional symptoms that were irritative in five and obstructive in four, and four had urinary incontinence. Urodynamic studies showed that three patients had residual urine of 158 ml on average. Cystometry showed that four patients had detrusor hyperreflexia and one had low compliance cystometrogram. External sphincter electromyography showed that four patients had detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. These results indicated that micturitional disturbance seemed to

Nerve input to tumours: Pathophysiological consequences of a dynamic relationship.

It is well known that tumours arising in different organs are innervated and that 'perineural invasion' (cancer cells escaping from the tumour by following the nerve trunk) is a negative prognostic factor. More surprisingly, increasing evidence suggests that the nerves can provide active inputs to tumours and there is two-way communication between nerves and cancer cells within the tumour microenvironment. Cells of the immune system also interact with the nerves and cancer cells. Thus, the nerve connections can exert significant control over cancer progression and modulating these (physically

Exposure to tobacco smoke containing either high or low levels of nicotine during adolescence: differential effects on choline uptake in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of experimental studies that investigate the effects of tobacco smoke exposure during adolescence. Here, we investigated the effects of tobacco smoke generated from cigarettes containing either high or low levels of nicotine on the cholinergic system. METHODS: From postnatal day (PN) 30 to 45, 18 C57BL/6 (inbred) and 16 Swiss (outbred) mice of both sexes were exposed to tobacco smoke (whole body exposure for 8 hr/day and 7 days/week) generated from one of two reference research cigarettes: type 3R4F (HighNIC group-nicotine = 0.73 mg/cigarette) or type 4A1 (LowNIC

Neuromuscular blocking drugs and heart rate changes after direct nerve stimulation and during classical conditioning in cats.

Two experiments investigated cardiovascular responses to several common neuromuscular blocking compounds. Experiment 1, employing 16 cats, assessed ganglionic transmission in sympathetic and parasympathetic systems controlling heart rate and blood pressure after d-tubocurarine chloride (d-T.C.), dimethyl d-tubocurarine iodide (D. d-T.I.), succinylcholine chloride (SC), or saline. Cardiovascular responses to sympathetic stimulation were essentially unaffected at drug levels that blocked evoked electromyograms; however, vagally evoked bradycardia and corresponding blood pressure decrease were bl

Evidence for cholinergic synapses between dissociated rat sympathetic neurons in cell culture.

Sympathetic principal neurons were dissociated from superior cervical ganglia of new-born rats, and grown in cell culture. In electrophysiological experiments two types of excitatory synapses were found. One, which was relatively rare, was shown to operate by electrical transmission. The other, the predominant type, had several characteristics of chemical transmission, and pharmacological evidence indicated it was cholinergic.
