Function of Connexins in the Interaction between Glial and Vascular Cells in the Central Nervous System and Related Neurological Diseases.

Neuronal signaling together with synapse activity in the central nervous system requires a precisely regulated microenvironment. Recently, the blood-brain barrier is considered as a "neuro-glia-vascular unit," a structural and functional compound composed of capillary endothelial cells, glial cells, pericytes, and neurons, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of the microenvironment in and out of the brain. Tight junctions and adherens junctions, which function as barriers of the blood-brain barrier, are two well-known kinds in the endothelial cell junctions. In this review, w…

Sources of adult mesenchymal stem cells applicable for musculoskeletal applications - a systematic review of the literature.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were first discovered by Friedenstein and his colleagues in 1976 from bone marrow. The unique property of these cells was their potential to develop into fibroblastic colony forming cells. Since Friedenstein's discovery of these cells the interest in adult MSCs has been progressively growing. Nowadays MSCs are defined as undeveloped biological cells capable of proliferation, self renewal and regenerating tissues. All these properties of MSCs have been discovered in the past 35 years. MSCs can play a crucial role in tissue engineering, organogenesis, gene therapy,

Identification of signaling systems in proliferating and involuting phase infantile hemangiomas by genome-wide transcriptional profiling.

Infantile hemangiomas are characterized by rapid capillary growth during the first year of life followed by involution during early childhood. The natural history of these lesions creates a unique opportunity to study the changes in gene expression that occur in the vessels of these tumors as they proliferate and regress. Here we use laser capture microdissection and genome-wide transcriptional profiling of vessels from proliferating and involuting hemangiomas to identify differentially expressed genes. Relative to normal placental vessels, proliferating hemangiomas were characterized by incre

Vascular changes in merkel cell carcinoma based on a histopathological study of 92 cases.

Although prominent vascular proliferation is a known feature of various neuroendocrine tumors, it has not been systematically studied in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin. The purpose of this study was to fully characterize the light microscopic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of vascular changes associated with MCC and to determine their frequency and differential diagnostic implications. Additionally, the presence of human herpesvirus 8 DNA in the lesional tissue was investigated. Of 92 studied cases of MCC, 18 cases (20%) were found to exhibit foci of prominent vasc

The structural basis of the inner blood-retina barrier in the eye of Macaca mulatta.

This is a morphological analysis of the inner blood-retina barrier in various segments of the retinal vasculature in the eye of Macaque monkeys. The primary aims of this study are to identify the components of the walls of the arteries, central capillaries, peripheral capillaries and veins of the retina using light and electron microscopy, and to compare and contrast junctional morphology as revealed by thin section electron microscopy and freeze-fracture. The walls of these vascular segments are composed of continuous endothelium, muscle cells or pericytes, and connective tissue. Endothelial …

Aspartylglycosaminuria (AGU) is a hereditary metabolic disorder characterized by slowly progressive mental deterioration from infancy, urina … er cell types, particularly in the kupffer cells and brain macrophages, as well as in the capillary pericytes. Biochemical studies suggest that the principal storage material consists of aspartylglycosamine itself; glycoasparagines of higher molecular weight are present as only minor components. Mitochondrial dysfunction of renal tubular epithelial cells in chronic kidney disease-associated fibrosis: from organelle homeostasis to multicellular remodeling.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health burden, and renal fibrosis is a common pathological correlate of progressive loss of k … nflammatory cell death, and paracrine signaling to fibroblasts, macrophages, endothelial cells, and pericytes. Evidence is organized within a tubule-to-niche framework that distinguishes causal perturbation from temporal or transcriptomic association, model-specific findings from cross-model convergence, and experimental efficacy from clinical translation. …

Mechanisms and integrative machine learning approaches to blood-brain barrier biomarker profiling for personalized ischemic stroke management.

Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption playing a central role in vasogenic edema, neuroinflammation, hemorrhagic transformation, and secondary neuronal injury. The BBB is a specialized neurovascular unit composed of endothelial tight junctions, pericytes, astrocytes, and basement membrane structures that undergo coordinated molecular and cellular changes during ischemia-reperfusion injury, generating diverse biomarker signatures including endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammatory mediators, and extracel…

Micro-Fragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT) in Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine: A Narrative Review of the Biological Basis and Clinical Evidence.

Micro-fragmented adipose tissue (mFAT) is a promising autologous biologic in regenerative medicine because it provides a mechanically processed adipose-derived product that preserves native extracellular matrix architecture and a cellular milieu rich in mesenchymal stem cells, pericytes, growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular vesicles. Mechanistically, mFAT is hypothesized to act largely through paracrine signaling that dampens inflammation, supports vascular stabilization, and promotes cartilage and soft-tissue repair; in vitro data suggest modulation of osteoarthritic synovial macropha…
