AIDS knowledge, occupational precautions, and public education activities among law enforcement officers and first responders.

A survey on AIDS was administered within a large, southern California jurisdiction to law enforcement officers and first responders (paramedics, firefighters). Respondents had accurate knowledge about AIDS but several incorrect perceptions about HIV transmission; a substantial proportion believed that HIV could be contracted from casual contact. AIDS training was not frequent. Self-assessment of HIV risk was medium to high risk in one-third of respondents, and was largely attributable to fear of occupational exposure. Appropriate precautionary professional practices were adopted at low frequen

Canadian Youth Correctional Officers' Views on Their Work and Relationships With Youth in Their Care.

This study explored the personal perspectives of youth correctional officers within secure and open custody facilities in Ontario. A multi-methods design allowed for quantitative data collection to assess demographics and scores on a relationship scale and qualitative open-ended survey responses to explore areas of interest regarding officer work. Despite a small sample size (N = 26), results indicated trends in officers' views of their work and relationships with youth. Youth officers report various job duties ranging from supervision/security to cleaning and preparing meals. Results indicate

Exposure to aggression in three contexts of emergency response: A longitudinal examination of the relationship with psychological characteristics of the emergency responder.

Some emergency responders are more often exposed to workplace aggression than others. Victimological theories and previous studies suggest that characteristics of the target may predict exposure to workplace aggression. This paper examines the relationship between negative affect, hostile attribution, dominance, empathy, self-evaluations, and exposure to workplace aggression among emergency responders. Emergency medical workers, firefighters and police officers in the Netherlands filled in a survey during three measurement occasions (6 months apart). Results from the three occupational groups …

Mobilisation of emergency services for chemical incidents in Sweden - a multi-agency focus group study.

BACKGROUND: In chemical incidents, infrequent but potentially disastrous, the World Health Organization calls for inter-organizational coordination of actors involved. Multi-organizational studies of chemical response capacities are scarce. We aimed to describe chemical incident experiences and perceptions of Swedish fire and rescue services, emergency medical services, police services, and emergency dispatch services personnel. METHODS: Eight emergency service organizations in two distinct and dissimilar regions in Sweden participated in one organization-specific focus group interview each. …

Adaptation and Validation of a Burnout Inventory in a Survey of the Staff of a Correctional Institution in Bulgaria.

BACKGROUND: Burnout syndrome is a phenomenon that seems to be studied globally in relation to all types of populations. The staff in the system of correctional institutions in Bulgaria, however, is oddly left out of this tendency. There is no standardized model in Bulgaria that can be used to detect possible susceptibility to professional burnout. The methods available at present only register the irreversible changes that have already set in the functioning of the individual. V. Boyko's method for burnout assessment allows clinicians to use individual approach to patients and affords easy com

Influence of PAHs in ambient air on chromosomal aberrations in exposed subjects: international study - EXPAH.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (c-PAHs) in complex mixtures in ambient air on DNA damage (chromosomal aberrations) in occupationally exposed subjects measured as percent of aberrant cells (% AB.C.). There were in total 203 exposed subjects and 150 respective controls in the whole project, allocated in three different European cities - Kosice (Slovakia), Prague (Czech Republic) and Sofia (Bulgaria). The studied population from Kosice (Slovakia) consisted of 106 subjects. From these 51 were exposed policemen and 55 were contr…

Fatal accident resulting from methyl bromide poisoning after fumigation of a neighbouring house; leakage through sewage pipes.

An intoxication after using methyl bromide (CH3Br) in fumigation is reported. The accident resulted in the death of a newborn infant within 12-13 h after exposure, as well as clinical intoxication of the infant's parents. The concentration of bromide ion in the infant's blood was 170 mg l-1 and in the parents blood it was 130 and 110 mg l-1. Autopsy showed that the cause of death was acute pneumonia due to aspiration, most likely resulting from vomiting and aspiration after inhalation of CH3Br. The clinical symptoms of the parents are reported, as well as a brief survey on the kinetics and CH3

Artificial intelligence in intimate partner violence risk pathways: a PRISMA-ScR review of femicide prevention and medico-legal accountability.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing and related decision-support methods are increasingly studied in intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic-violence and gender-based violence contexts. The key question is not whether AI can predict femicide as an individual lethal event, but whether AI-related methods may help institutions recognise, document, communicate and act on distributed signs of escalation across clinical, legal, police, social-service and digital settings. METHODS: This PRISMA-ScR scoping review, informed by Joanna Briggs Insti…

Acute Psychosis and the Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash: Psychose aiguë et risque d'accident de la route.

BackgroundLimited evidence guides fitness-to-drive decision-making following an episode of acute psychosis.MethodWe used population-based administrative health and driving data from British Columbia, Canada, to identify all police-attended motor vehicle crashes between 2000 and 2016. Drivers were considered exposed if a hospitalization for acute psychosis ended in the 6-week interval prior to the crash. We assessed the association between psychosis and crashes using a case-crossover design that controls for relatively fixed individual characteristics like personality and routine driving habits…

Interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder among first responders: implications for public health response and system resilience.

INTRODUCTION: First responders, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, police officers, firefighters, and disaster responders, are at increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to repeated exposure to traumatic events. Although EMS personnel face unique occupational stressors, much of the available evidence on PTSD interventions is derived from broader first-responder populations. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness, feasibility, and sustainability of psychological interventions for PTSD among first responders, with particular…
