Periportal fibrosis and portal hypertension were induced by periodic retrograde biliary injections of sesame oil for two to three months in 12 cholecystectomized dogs equipped with Thomas cannulas. Stable portal hypertension between 18 and 24 cm of water occurred in four of 12 dogs (baseline: 10.4 +/- 0.5 cm of water); the remaining eight dogs required continuous biliary oil injections to maintain the portal pressure in that range. A woman in her sixties with portosystemic shunt and hepatic encephalopathy underwent open mesenteric vein ligation, resulting in improved portal flow and blood ammonia. In this case, 4D flow MRI was a valuable diagnostic and follow-up tool, visualizing and quantifying physiological portal hemodynamics with features distinct from those of contrast-enhanced CT and digital subtraction angiography. Our case study highlights the value of 4D flow MRI for managing portosystemic shunts.

BACKGROUND: Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF) is one of the important causes of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage in patients in tropical countries. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and laboratory profile of 68 patients with NCPF.

BACKGROUND: Clear visualization of the portal vein is essential for managing liver diseases such as those requiring transplantation and portal hypertension. However, abdominal computed tomography angiography (CTA) is often challenged by poor vascular contrast and lingering arterial signals, complicating manual segmentation. This study assesses the feasibility and effectiveness of using contrast-enhancement boost (CE-boost) and black-blood computed tomography (BBCT) techniques to improve image quality and reduce the manual segmentation time of the portal venous system in abdominal CTA.

OBJECTIVE: Study of liver explants of biliary atresia (BA) patients with successful Kasai portoenterostomy (KP).
METHODS: Pathology and medical records of BA liver explants from January 2009 to June 2018 with successful KP were reviewed along with appropriate controls.
RESULTS: Fourteen out of 68 (20.6%) BA patients with LT had a successful KP. Median age at BA diagnosis, KP and LT was 60.5 days, 61 days, and 10 years, respectively, with conjugated bilirubin (c-bil) normalizing at 12.5 weeks after KP.
