OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of the volume of fluid administered at 1 and 6 hours after presentation, with survival and the occurrence of the adult respiratory distress syndrome, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, and persistent hypovolemia during the resuscitation of children with septic shock.

The outcome of treatment for trigeminal neuralgia was evaluated in 145 patients treated with cryotherapy, 265 patients treated with radiofrequency thermocoagulation and 65 patients treated with microvascular decompression. We used a meta-analysis protocol to evaluate the results of 18 controlled trials that measured the effectiveness of perioperative total parenteral nutrition. The pooled results of 11 trials that were randomized or quasi-randomized showed trends suggesting that total parenteral nutrition reduced the risk for complications from major surgery (p = 0.21) and fatalities (p = 0.21). Consideration of these pooled estimates of the effectiveness of this intervention must be offset by the poor quality of the trials' methodologies and the iatrogenic complications (pneumothorax, septicemia) that occurred

A review of 467 cases of supraglottic laryngectomy operated during the last 30 years is presented. Cases have been subdivided into groups according to stage and TNM classification. By far the most numerous in this series were T2 cases. No cases prevailed over N+ by 4:1. Stage II cases represented about 60% of the total. Results are analyzed according to TNM and staging. The relationship between hypnotizability and clinical improvement following brief psychotherapy was investigated. Prior to treatment 32 patients were assessed for hypnotizability utilizing an objective standardized measure of hypnotizability. Measures of psychopathology were obtained at the conclusion of ten sessions and six months post-treatment. A positive relationship was found between outcome and hypnotizability. Rehabilitation services for people with mental illnesses have been extensively researched. However, services with similar aims and specifications for patients with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have had little focus.
