Equity of African American Men in Headache in the United States: A Perspective From African American Headache Medicine Specialists (Part 1).

Migraine and severe headache affect approximately 1 in 6 U.S. adults and migraine is one of the most disabling disorders worldwide. Approximately 903,000 to 1.5 million African American (AA) men are affected by migraine in the United States. Racial disparities in headache medicine exist. In addition, there are limited headache studies that attest to the inclusion of or have robust data on AA men in headache medicine in the United States. Racial concordance between provider and patient may ameliorate some aspects of care disparities. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that diversity and inclusi

Dimorphism in axial and appendicular dimensions, cortical and trabecular microstructure and matrix mineral density in Chinese and Caucasian women.

INTRODUCTION: Appendicular fractures are less common in Chinese than Caucasian women. Bone mineral density (BMD) is lower, not higher than in Caucasians because Chinese have smaller appendicular dimensions than Caucasians. However, smaller bones may offset the liability to fracture by being assembled with a more robust microstructure. We hypothesized that Chinese assemble an appendicular skeleton with a thicker, less porous and more mineralized cortex that is less deteriorated in advanced age than in Caucasians. METHODS: We compared anthropometry in 477 Chinese and 278 Caucasian women and com

A Prospective Examination of Racial Microaggressions in the Medical Encounter.

Disparities in healthcare and health outcomes between whites and non-whites continue to plague the US healthcare system. A large literature suggests that people of color face obstacles at various points in the healthcare system. This article examines one such obstacle: whether patients of color experience microaggressions from physicians during primary care medical visits. A majority of microaggression studies are qualitative and retrospective in nature. In the current study, we use a prospective approach to broaden how microaggressions are measured, as well as understand differential treatmen

Race Attribution Modifies the Association Between Daily Discrimination and Major Depressive Disorder Among Blacks: the Role of Gender and Ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: Although the association between discrimination and depression among Blacks is well-known, we do not know if this effect is influenced by race attribution. In this current study, we investigated the effect modification of race attribution on the association between everyday discrimination and major depressive disorder (MDD) among Blacks in the United States, and whether this effect modification is influenced by the intersection of ethnicity and gender. METHODS: With a cross-sectional design, this study used data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. The study

Psychohistory and Slavery: Preliminary Issues.

"Psychohistory and Slavery: Preliminary Issues," begins an examination of slavery in the antebellum South. The paper suggests that how slavery and the group-fantasy of white male supremacy were perpetuated among slaveholders is a question of fundamental importance for psychohistorians. The family and childrearing are the focus of attention. Given the ferocity of slavery, it is argued that the psychological and emotional consequences of this barbarism were not limited to the slaves themselves, but had significant impact on the slaveholders as well-their parenting, their children, and their chil

Barriers to appealing, effecti … mmendations that address the unique features of residential treatment. Manifestations of anti-Black racism in the US within and outside of the medical system make these changes particularly salient for Black patients. Burden of Unfair Treatment and Subclinical Atherosclerotic Risk Among Black Adults: The Moderating Role of Religious Coping.

BACKGROUND: This study examined whether religious coping modified the longitudinal associations between lifetime discrimination and subclinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk among Black individuals, and if these effects differed by sex. METHODS: Data were collected from 753 Black adult participants (44.5% men; mean age=49.3 years) in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured using ultrasonography at baseline (Wave 1: 2004-2009) and a subsequent follow-up visit (Wave 4: 2013-2017). Abnormal CIMT

The interaction of patient race, provider bias, and clinical ambiguity on pain management decisions.

UNLABELLED: Although racial disparities in pain care are widely reported, much remains to be known about the role of provider and contextual factors. We used computer-simulated patients to examine the influence of patient race, provider racial bias, and clinical ambiguity on pain decisions. One hundred twenty-nine medical residents/fellows made assessment (pain intensity) and treatment (opioid and nonopioid analgesics) decisions for 12 virtual patients with acute pain. Race (black/white) and clinical ambiguity (high/low) were manipulated across vignettes. Participants completed the Implicit As

Effects of perceived racial discrimination on health status and health behavior: a differential mediation hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective data tested a "differential mediation" hypothesis: The relations (found in previous research) between perceived racial discrimination and physical health status versus health-impairing behavior (problematic substance use) are mediated by two different types of affective reactions, internalizing and externalizing. METHOD: The sample included 680 African American women from the Family and Community Health Study (M age = 37 years at Time 1; 45 years at Time 4). Four waves of data were analyzed. Perceived discrimination was assessed, along with anxiety and depression (inter
