Iterative reconstruction technique vs filter back projection: utility for quantitative bronchial assessment on low-dose thin-section MDCT in patients with/without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of the iterative reconstruction (IR) technique for quantitative bronchial assessment during low-dose computed tomography (CT) as a substitute for standard-dose CT in patients with/without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. METHODS: Fifty patients (mean age, 69.2; mean % predicted FEV1, 79.4) underwent standard-dose CT (150mAs) and low-dose CT (25mAs). Except for tube current, the imaging parameters were identical for both protocols. Standard-dose CT was reconstructed using filtered back-projection (FBP), and low-dose CT was rec

Technical considerations for lower limb multidetector computed tomographic angiography.

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enables imaging of the entire arterial tree non-invasively. Optimal technical considerations for performing MDCT angiography (MDCTA) are essential for accurate diagnosis and atherosclerotic disease stratification. This review article focuses on the various technical aspects necessary for peripheral computed tomographic angiography (CTA) acquisition. Common clinical indications for peripheral MDCTA and the latest scan protocols are described. The essential issue of radiation dose reduction is discussed, along with methods of optimal contrast bolus detect

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT in a patient with esophageal and genital leiomyomatosis.

Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis is a rare benign tumor, which can be associated with leiomyoma in female genital tracts involving the uterus, vagina, and vulva. Alport syndrome, an inherited disorder that includes the kidneys, eyes, and sensorineural hearing loss, is also rarely associated with these multiple leiomyomatosis. In our case, (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography was used to distinguish esophageal and genital leiomyomatosis from malignant masses.

MDCT assessment of tracheomalacia in symptomatic infants with mediastinal aortic vascular anomalies: preliminary technical experience.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal aortic vascular anomalies are relatively common causes of extrinsic central airway narrowing in infants with respiratory symptoms. Surgical correction of mediastinal aortic vascular anomalies alone might not adequately treat airway symptoms if extrinsic narrowing is accompanied by intrinsic tracheomalacia (TM), a condition that escapes detection on routine end-inspiratory imaging. Paired inspiratory-expiratory multidetector CT (MDCT) has the potential to facilitate early diagnosis and timely management of TM in symptomatic infants with mediastinal aortic vascular anomal

Chronic appendicitis "syndrome" manifested by an appendicolith and thickened appendix presenting as chronic right lower abdominal pain in adults.

In this short report, we describe a small series of adult patients with chronic appendicitis presenting with chronic right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The clinical presentation was unusual and atypical for classic appendicitis because of the absence of fever, peritoneal tenderness on focused graded compression of the abdomen, and leukocytosis. Computed tomography (CT) findings included the presence of an appendicolith and appendiceal thickening, without mesenteric infiltration, abscess, or collection. In this series, the appendicolith appeared to represent a marker rather than an actual cau

Two-dimensional fusion imaging of planar bone scintigraphy and radiographs in patients with clinical scaphoid fracture: an imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now considered the gold standard in second-line imaging of patients with suspected scaphoid fracture and negative radiographs, bone scintigraphy can be used in patients with pacemakers, metallic implants, or other contraindications to MRI. Bone scintigraphy is highly sensitive for the detection of fractures, but exact localization of scintigraphic lesions may be difficult and can negatively affect diagnostic accuracy. PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of image fusion of planar bone scintigraphy and radiographs on image interpretatio

A pilot study of a novel method to visualize three-dimensional dose distribution on skin surface images to evaluate radiation dermatitis.

Predicting the radiation dose‒toxicity relationship is important for local tumor control and patients' quality of life. We developed a first intuitive evaluation system that directly matches the three-dimensional (3D) dose distribution with the skin surface image of patients with radiation dermatitis (RD) to predict RD in patients undergoing radiotherapy. Using an RGB-D camera, 82 3D skin surface images (3DSSIs) were acquired from 19 patients who underwent radiotherapy. 3DSSI data acquired included 3D skin surface shape and optical imaging of the area where RD occurs. Surface registration betw

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings of Crystalloid-Containing Parotid Cysts.

Crystalloids are occasionally encountered on fine needle aspiration of cystic parotid lesions. This goal of this study was to retrospectively characterize the MRI features of a series benign crystalloid-containing parotid cysts. A total of 4 patients with fine needle aspiration findings of crystalloids and available parotid MRI scans were identified. Review of the imaging revealed that the cystic lesions contain layering material that corresponds to crystals.

Serial MRI studies over 12 months using manual and atlas-based region of interest in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of upper and lower motor neurons. There is a need for an imaging biomarker to track disease progression. Previously, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown loss of grey and white matter in the brain of patients with ALS compared to controls. We performed serial diffusion tractography imaging (DTI) study of patients with ALS looking for changes over time. METHODS: On all subjects (n = 15), we performed three MRI studies at 6 month intervals. DTI changes were assessed with tract-based spatia

Brain positron emission tomography with 2-18F-2-deoxi-D-glucose of patients with dystonia and essential tremor detects differences between these disorders.

We studied patients with dystonia (D) and essential tremor (ET) using positron emission tomography (PET) equipped with Cortex ID software. This allowed PET brain visualisation to be compared to scans of a control group by means of the z-score. The study revealed hypo-metabolism in both D and ET groups, and additionally revealed a difference between these two groups of patients in certain areas of the brain. These two nosological forms overlap in clinical features and are difficult to differentiate. The PET picture may help to provide a differential diagnosis in addition to the biochemical diff

Surgical Treatment for Posterior Dislocation of Hip Combined with Acetabular Fractures Using Preoperative Virtual Simulation and Three-Dimensional Printing Model-Assisted Precontoured Plate Fixation Techniques.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hip dislocation combined with acetabular fracture remains a challenging condition for orthopedic surgeons. In this study, we utilized a computer-assisted simulation and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to treat patients with hip dislocation combined with acetabular fracture. We hypothesized that the 3D printing-assisted method would shorten the internal fixation time and surgical time. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients diagnosed with traumatic posterior dislocation of hip combined with acetabular fractures and treated with plate fixation from S

Image guidance can support scaphoid K-wire insertion: an experimental study and initial clinical experience.

PURPOSE: In the treatment of small bone fractures, such as the scaphoid bone, conventional navigation is limited by its dependence on fixed reference arrays. We introduce a new technique based on reference markers in surgical instruments. If visible on a standard fluoroscopic image, static trajectories are overlaid in this image to guide implant insertions. Fixed markers are not required. The purpose of this study was to identify the possible advantages of the new guidance technique. METHODS: For this study, 20 artificial hand specimens were randomized into two groups and blinded with polyure
