The potential value of the pinnal-pedal scratch reflex as an aid to diagnosing canine scabies was assessed in 588 dogs with skin disease. The reflex was assessed by vigorously rubbing the tip of one earflap on to the base of the ear for five seconds, and it was considered positive if the ipsilateral hind leg made a scratching movement. INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular side-effects are less frequent with moclobemide than with tricyclic or monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants. We performed a detailed assessment of cardiovascular reflexes in 15 patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for social phobia, before treatment and whilst taking a stable dose of moclobemide for a median of 7 weeks.

Inhalation cough challenge is a useful tool in the physiological and pharmacological investigation of the cough reflex. There are three types of challenge used, capsaicin and the vanilloids, organic acids, and distilled water challenge. In addition, challenge may be administered in a single dose or cumulative dose fashion. The correct combination of inhalation technology and tussive stimulus produces a sensitive and specific method for estimating the cough reflex.

Using a technique that we have previously described, intermittent breaths of low concentrations of ammonia vapour were used to measure the effect of ethyl alcohol 0.55-0.66 g/kg on UARS in ten healthy male volunteers. In a double-blind, cross-over study, we have investigated the effect of oral diazepam 20 mg and placebo on the sensitivity of upper airway reflexes in 10 male volunteers (aged 25-35 yr). Upper airway reflex sensitivity (UARS) was assessed using small concentrations of ammonia vapour as a stimulus to upper airway receptors. A threshold concentration of ammonia, at which reflex glottic closure occurred in response to the ammonia stimulus, was used as a measure of UARS. With diazepam, there was significant depression of UARS from 30 to 150 min after administration.

The on-off effect of the acoustic stapedius reflex was found in association with several kinds of ear disease: otosclerotic stapes fixation, incudostapedial dislocation and sensorineural hearing loss. The purpose of the present study was to assess the mechanical behavior of an expiratory muscle during defensive reflexes. Transversus abdominis muscle length changes were measured using sonomicrometry in anesthetized dogs.
