Cold War interrogation scholarship generated a research literature that included many prominent 20th century psychologists. The return of Korean War prisoners, many of whom had confessed falsely or otherwise collaborated with the enemy during confinement, amplified the intense anti-Communist fears of the Cold War. These events prompted substantial military and other government responses. Many scholars in psychology committed their time, scholarship, and expertise to the protection of United States military personnel in the event of capture. In this article, we reconstruct some of these efforts

RATIONALE: It is very likely that we will miss Bing-Neel syndrome (BNS) when its initial sign is anemia.Patient concerns: A 59-year-old woman presented with episodic loss of consciousness, anemia, and extremity muscle strength scores (5-) and extremity tendon reflexes (++).
DIAGNOSES: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed abnormal signal in the left hippocampus, left insula, and right occipital lobe. Quantitative serum immunoglobulins showed elevated immunoglobulinm (IgM) (60.6g/L). Bone marrow biopsy showed lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL) and tested positive for the MYD88 L265P mutation s

The patient is a 73-y-male who was referred after a fall without losing consciousness or secessus. Clinical exam revealed disorientation, ophthalmoparesis, hemianopia to the left, left hemineglect, hypoacusis, quadruparesis, general wasting, generally reduced tendon reflexes, mild rigor, occasional myoclonic jerks of the right lower limb, and ataxia of the left lower limb. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a stroke-like lesion (SLL), generalized atrophy, white matter lesions, and ponsgliosis. The previous history was positive for diabetes, hypoacusis, arterial hypertension, hype

Syncope is a sudden but reversible brief loss of consciousness secondary to an acute reduction of cerebral perfusion. Reflex syncope denotes neurologically mediated syncope, which includes vasovagal, carotid sinus syndrome, and other situational syncope. The most frequent form of syncope is vasovagal, which is triggered by emotional stress or prolonged standing, and may be diagnosed with the tilt table test. A thorough investigation of syncope is necessary as serious cardiovascular disorders may also be a cause. A tilt table test is a widely used tool utilized by clinicians to diagnose vasovag

Bacterial meningitis is an infectious pathology that remains a public health challenge. The most frequent etiological agent is Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is also associated with higher rates of mortality and sequels. However, less is known about the clinical presentation of atypical non-pneumoniae streptococcal meningitis. Here, we studied a 23-year-old man with no medical background who presented with projectile vomiting, states of consciousness alteration, unilateral cranial nerve palsy, and meningeal signs. Neuroimaging showed tonsillar herniation, regions of empyema, right transverse

In this report, we describe unilateral medial pontomedullary junction (MPMJ) syndrome as a novel brain stem stroke syndrome. A 68-year-old woman suddenly developed vertigo, ipsilateral facial paresis, contralateral thermal hypoalgesia (TH) and dysphagia without lateral gaze palsy, curtain sign and hoarseness. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a small infarction at the right MPMJ. MR angiography did not show vertebrobasilar arterial dissection, thrombosis or vasospasm. Finally, her dysphagia regressed over 4 weeks in synchronization with recovery of TH. To the best of our knowledge and bas

We highlight the case of a woman who had elective gynaecological surgery with bilateral prophylactic ureteric catheterisation, indicated for the excision of a mucinous cystadenoma arising from the right ovary. Surgery was successful with no intraoperative complications. Anuria and subsequent acute kidney injury developed within 12 hours of surgery. A CT of the kidneys, ureters and bladder revealed mild bilateral hydronephrosis and perinephric stranding surrounding the left kidney with no discernible injury to the lower urinary tract. Further investigation did not reveal a clear cause for her a

Astrocytoma as one of the most common central nervous system (CNS) tumors is rarely reported in veterinary literature. A 7-year-old Persian Lori-Bakhtiari ewe was presented to the clinic with a two months history of progressive blindness, nystagmus to the right, bilaterally decreased pupillary reflexes, head pressing and paddling. At necropsy, a whitish well-circumscribed mass with dimensions of 3.50×2.50×1.50 cm was observed in the dorsal parietal lobe of the left cerebral hemisphere. Microscopically, the mass was well-circumscribed and highly cellular, consisted of round to elongated cells w

In this study, quercetin-loaded zein-based nanofibers were developed using electrospinning technique. The therapeutic effect of these quercetin-loaded nanofibers on neuropathy in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetes in rats was assessed. Diabetic condition was induced in male Wistar rats by STZ, after which a crush injury of the right sciatic nerve was performed to induce mononeuropathy. Functional recovery was assessed using walking track analysis, measurements of foot withdrawal reflex, nerve conduction velocity, and morphological analysis. The oxidative stress status and the ratio of pho

Autoimmune encephalitis is rare. Several auto- antibodies are described in autoimmune encephalitis. We describe a case of autoimmune limbic encephalitis associated with positive voltage gated potassium channel (VGKC) antibodies and positive leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 antibodies (LGI1). A 33-year-old Saudi housewife, she presented with 2 months history of cognitive deterioration and recurrent left facio-brachial dystonic seizures followed by generalized tonic clonic seizures. At times the seizures are preceded by rising epigastric aura and shortness of breath. The neurological ex

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide both in adult and pediatric population. Although flaccid paralysis is the hallmark of this disease, there are some rare variants which may be easily missed unless suspected. Here, we present a very rare variant of GBS - acute bulbar palsy plus syndrome in a pediatric patient. A 13-year-old female child presented with right-sided lower motor neuron type of facial palsy and palsy of bilateral glossopharyngeal and vagus nerve of 2 weeks duration. On detailed neurological examination, motor and sensory syst

An 11-month-old baby girl presented with white reflex in her left eye. On examination, there was a 6.5×5 mm(2)haemangioma present over her face involving on her lower lip. Systemic examinations were within normal limits. The left eye was small, with an axial length of 16.08 mm and had a cataract. Ultrasonography of the left eye was suggestive of the presence of a vascular stalk, persistent hyperplasia of a primary vitreous, or persistent fetal vasculature with vitreous haemorrhage. On MRI, the left eye was small with vitreous haemorrhage. Left eye lens aspiration was performed and the bleeding

Clinical manifestations of 16 patients with spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma were presented. We examined the point similar to that of stroke. During the initial visit of our hospital, the patients showed the hemiplegia in 10 cases (62.5%), Horner syndrome in 4 cases (25%), the painless onset in 1 case (6.3%). And one case showed the impairment of consciousness due to vagal reflex in severe pain onset, which was similar to those of subarachnoid hemorrhage. MRI images are useful to confirm the diagnosis. The frequent site of hematoma was the lower cervical spinal cord. The oval shaped hemato

BACKGROUND: The use of cold nasal packs on the nose and nape of the neck is currently recommended for patients with epistaxis as this is thought to induce reflex nasal vasoconstriction, which decreases the bleeding. There have been a few investigations on the effect of cold compress application to the nose, but none of these focused specifically on nasal cooling of the skin of the nose.
METHODS: Acoustic rhinometry was performed to obtain baseline measurements. Nasal dorsal skin was then cooled with two ice packs that were held on the left and right side of the nose for a total of 10 minutes

A neonate with an estimated gestational age of 32 weeks who had post-partum sepsis (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA] and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and MRSA meningitis was found to have blunted light reflexes and microphthalmia in both eyes on routine screening for retinopathy of prematurity. Retrolenticular membranes precluded visualization of the fundi. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of intraocular calcifications, an interval development over 6 weeks from previously normal scans. Referral was made and diagnostic enucleation of the right eye was performed, revealing

A 29-year-old man was referred to our hospital with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) and stage III hepatic coma (somnolence and confusion). Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) was planned for 2 days after admission to our hospital. However, on the day after admission, he lapsed into stage IV hepatic coma: no right reflexes and no response to pain stimuli. Emergency cranial computed tomography revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), but no aneurysm was seen on magnetic resonance angiography. We speculated that the cause of the SAH may have been bleeding of intracranial veins secondary to

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is an infrequently-reported consequence of recreational drug abuse. Although there are sporadic reports of hearing loss from heroin and cocaine ingested separately, there are no reports of hearing loss resulting from the combination of both drugs ingested simultaneously in the form of speedballing.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to document a case of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss associated with an episode of speedballing.
RESEARCH DESIGN: Case Report.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: The subject of this report was a 40-year-old man with a 20-year histor

We report the first non-Caucasian case of facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) syndrome partially responding to various immunotherapies. A 55-year-old man had first felt paresthesia on his right cheek at age 45. This gradually extended to the scalp. Paresthesia of bilateral fingers and dysphagia appeared 6 years later. On admission, facial sensory impairment and bulbar palsy were found. There were no sensory or motor deficits evident in any limb, except for decreased deep tendon reflex and vibratory sensation. Videofluorography (VF) revealed decreased pharyngeal clearance. The s

The authors describe a rare case of lumbar discal cyst which produced manifestations similar o lumbar disc herniation. A 33-year-old man, who had had a crick in the back 3 months previously, suffered from severe low back and right lower-extremity pain. The neurological examination showed the L5 radiculopathy through the positive straight leg-raising test, no motor weakness nor sensory disturbance with normal reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an oval shaped extradural lesion with a low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and a high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Addi
