Uterine tumors with neuroectodermal differentiation. A report of 4 cases.

We report four cases of uterine tumors with neuroectodermal differentiation. One tumor had neuroectodermal component only; in the three other tumors, the neuroectodermal component was admixed with another component, namely rhabdomyosarcoma (1 case), and endometrioid adenocarcinoma (2 cases). Histologically, the neuroectodermal component consisted of small to medium sized cells arranged in diffuse sheets. The tumor cells had round nuclei with stippled to coarsely granular chromatin, mostly with non-prominent nucleoli, and scant eosinophilic or amphophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, 4/4 t

From the archives of the AFIP. Primary tumors of the spine: radiologic pathologic correlation.

Primary tumors of the spine are relatively infrequent lesions compared with metastatic disease, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma. However, when a solitary lesion of the spine occurs, these neoplasms represent an important group of entities for diagnostic consideration. A wide variety of benign neoplasms can involve the spine, including osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, giant cell tumor, enostosis, and osteochondroma. Common primary nonlymphoproliferative malignant neoplasms of the spine include chordoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma or primitive neuroectodermal tumor, and os…

Cesium therapy in cancer patients.

The effect of cesium therapy on various cancers is reported. A total of 50 patients were treated over a 3 year period with CsCl. The majority of the patients have been unresponsive to previous maximal modalities of cancer treatment and were considered terminal cases. The Cs-treatment consisted of CsCl in addition to some vitamins, minerals, chelating agents and salts of selenium, potassium and magnesium. In addition, a special diet was also instituted. There was an impressive 50% recovery of various cancers, i.e., cancer of unknown primary, breast, colon, prostate, pancrease, lung, liver, lymp

Primary Renal Mesenchymal Tumors: A Study from North India, Emphasizing Rare Entities and Molecular Profiles.

Primary renal mesenchymal tumors (PRMT) are uncommon, heterogeneous, and diagnostically challenging neoplasms. Comprehensive institutional data on the prevalence, clinicopathological features, immunohistochemical and molecular profiling, and outcomes of PRMTs in South Asia are limited. This retrospective study analyzed 64 surgically resected PRMTs from 1975 nephrectomies performed at our institution between January 2014 and June 2024. Tumors were categorized according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2022 classification system. Clinico-radiological and histopathological, treatment and fo

Radiation management of a late thoracic metastasis from an intracranial solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are a rare soft tissue sarcoma. We present a case of a male patient with an SFT of the right posterior fossa, with a late metastasis to the right lung and chest wall identified 18 years later.A small number of late metastases of SFTs have previously been reported. Metastases are typically managed surgically, although there is limited evidence suggesting that radiotherapy may be effective for primary SFTs.In this case, the patient declined treatment for his metastasised cancer for 5 years. He then only agreed to radiation treatment without surgery, which uniquely

Relationship between the timing of chemotherapy and surgical complications following surgical biopsy in children with malignant solid tumors.

BACKGROUND: Biopsies for diagnosis before chemotherapy is common in children with malignant solid tumors. Wound healing is delayed by chemotherapy; however, the ideal interval between biopsy and chemotherapy remains unknown. We aimed to summarize the relationship between chemotherapy timing and postoperative surgical complications. PROCEDURE: We retrospectively reviewed patients with malignant solid tumors who underwent chemotherapy after surgical biopsy at our institution between January 2014 and August 2020. The primary outcomes were postoperative surgical complications (within 30 days) and

[Incidence and risk factors for ifosfamide-related encephalopathy in sarcoma patients].

CONTEXT: Ifosfamide remains one of the major cytotoxic drugs for sarcoma management. Ifosfamid-related encephalopathy (IRE) is a rare but severe adverse event, without clearly identified risk factors. METHOD: We have carried out a single-center, retrospective study to assess the occurrence and the risk factors for IRE after the two first cycles of chemotherapy. We have collected the data-describing patients, biological data, tumors characteristics (histology, leptomeningeal metastasis) and ifosfamide administration modalities. RESULTS: From September 2008 to November 2013, we have identified

Two cases of clear cell sarcoma with different clinical and genetic features: cutaneous type with BRAF mutation and subcutaneous type with KIT mutation.

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS), also known as malignant melanoma of soft parts, is a rare malignancy constituting approximately 1% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. It occurs predominantly in the lower extremities of young adults, manifesting as a deep, painless, slow-growing mass. CCS is sometimes confused with other types of melanoma because of its melanocytic differentiation. Although BRAF and KIT mutations are well-known melanocytic tumour-promoting mutations frequently found in cutaneous melanoma, they are rare or absent in CCS. We present two cases of CCS with different clinical and genetic feature

Intestinal Clear Cell Sarcoma-A Case Presentation of an Extremely Rare Tumor and Literature Review.

Background: Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is an extremely rare form of sarcoma representing less than 1% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. It has morphological, structural, and immunohistochemical similarities to malignant melanoma, affecting young adults and equally affecting both sexes, and is usually located in the tendinous sheaths and aponeuroses of the limbs. Gastrointestinal localization is exceptional, with less than 100 cases reported thus far. The gene fusion of activating transcription factor 1 (ATF1) and the Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 (EWSR1) are pathognomonic for clear cell sarcoma,

CIC-DUX4 Sarcoma Involving the Skull Base: A Rare Presentation and Review of the Literature.

Background  CIC-DUX4 sarcoma is a rare, aggressive tumor that is difficult to diagnose. Although it is closely related to Ewing's sarcoma, each is a distinct pathologic entity and both have been previously reported in the skin, lymph nodes, and viscera. We report the first description of CIC-DUX4 involving the posterior cranial fossa and review the distinctive symptomatology, morphology, immunoprofile, and genetic signature that differentiate this rare tumor. Case Report  A 32-year-old man presented with an enlarging right lateral neck mass, progressive hoarseness, and orofacial pain. Biopsy r

Distal Tibial Reconstruction in the Management of Primary Bone Tumors in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Distal tibial primary bone tumors are rare, and options for limb salvage surgery are limited and challenging. Importantly, local control has shown to be crucial and necessary for cure, and radical surgery is one of the most important components of therapy for some bone sarcomas. We investigated the feasibility and functional and oncological outcomes of distal tibial reconstruction using endoprosthesis in children with malignant bone tumors. METHODS: Fourteen patients (median age 13.6 years) with primary bone tumors (4 Ewing sarcoma [ES], 10 osteosarcoma) of the distal tibiae were

FDG-PET CT in the evaluation of primary and secondary pancreatic malignancies.

PURPOSE: Primary pancreatic carcinoma and pancreatic metastases are rare in the pediatric population. Pancreatoblastoma is the most common pancreatic malignant tumor in young children and solid-pseudopapillary tumor in teenagers. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is extremely rare under the age of 40 and is usually associated with underlying genetic abnormalities. Secondary malignancies of the pancreas occur more frequently than primary pancreatic malignancies in children and are most commonly seen with non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and mesenchymal sarcomas. The purpose of this study was to characterize

Gait performance in an original biologic reconstruction of proximal femur in a skeletally immature child: a case report.

Biologic reconstruction of the femoral head by a sophisticated autotransplantation of the proximal growing fibula associated with a massive bone allograft has been performed in a 4-year-old girl affected by Ewing's sarcoma. The child was treated in 1997 and then followed: clinical and functional tests were performed 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 years after surgery. Gait and specific motor tasks were assessed by means of motion analysis instruments. The patient was followed by a specific rehabilitation program, aimed at controlling load on the treated limb, resuming good muscle function, and recovering a
