Positive affect regulation in anxiety disorders.

Although individual differences exist in how people respond to positive affect (PA), little research addresses PA regulation in people with anxiety disorders. The goal of this study was to provide information about responses to PA in people with symptoms of social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The tendency to dampen PA and the ability to savor PA were examined in an undergraduate sample. Analyses examined the unique links between these reactions and symptoms of anxiety disorders, controlling for a history of depression. Gi

Parent, teacher, and peer ratings of physically abused and nonmaltreated children's behavior.

Behavior ratings by parents, teachers, and classmates of physically abused fourth to sixth graders, identified from the New York City Maltreatment Register, and case-matched classroom controls, showed substantial concurrence among informants: Parents and teachers both rated significantly more behavioral disturbance in the abused children, and peers' ratings were significantly correlated with adults' ratings, especially those by teachers. Children's exposure to spouse or partner physical abuse, which had a substantial prevalence among both child-abusing and control families, reduced the differe

Levels and causes of maternal mortality in southern India.

Most studies of maternal mortality are hospital based. However, in developing countries, where many such deaths take place in the home, hospital statistics do not reflect the true extent of maternal mortality. Furthermore, the socioeconomic and demographic factors and health behavior affecting maternal mortality are rarely known. A study conducted in 1986 in South India demonstrates a new approach to investigating maternal mortality that combines the collection of information from hospital and health-facility records, field surveys, and case-control studies. The findings from this study indica

Type A behavior pattern: new perspectives on theory, assessment, and intervention.

Research on the Type A behavior pattern (TA) has been plagued by inadequate theory, insensitive assessment, and insufficient interventions. These problems (e.g., using global dichotomous ratings of TA) have contributed to several failures of TA to predict cardiovascular outcomes prompting concern for new approaches. Conceptual models are discussed, such as a transactional model of TA, social cognitive theories (e.g., self-evaluative processes), and associative network theory (e.g., how emotions distort information). The view of hostility as the only pathogenic feature of TA is questioned. The

Low-Intensity Social Care for Dementia Caregivers: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Resource needs increase strain among dementia caregivers. We tested the impact of CommunityRx-Dementia, a low-intensity resource referral intervention that provides education about common resource needs, a personalized list of nearby resources, and navigation support via a navigator and online resource finder. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind RCT comparing usual care (control) versus usual care plus CommunityRx-Dementia (intervention). We enrolled (12/2020-2/2024) English-speaking dementia caregivers agreeing to receive text messages who lived in a 62 ZIP code geography around

[Trauma Disorders - A Relevant Health Problem].

Trauma Disorders - A Relevant Health Problem Abstract. In medical practice traumatic stress disorders are underdiagnosed. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) must be considered in case of pronounced need for control, severe anxiety and restlessness, jumpiness, mental torpor, dissociative disorders, social withdrawal, distrust or vegetative over-arousal. Simple screening instruments such as the "Primary Care PTSD Screen" are suitable for an initial assessment. As long as symptoms are not serious and long-lasting and there are no risk factors for the development of severe PTSD, it is a matter

The Link between Individual Personality Traits and Criminality: A Systematic Review.

In addition to social and environmental factors, individual personality traits have intricately linked with maladaptive behaviour. Thus, the purpose of this article was to review the link between individual personality traits and criminality. A systematic review was conducted to obtain information regarding the link between individual personality traits with criminal behaviour in the Sage, Web of Science, APA PsycNet, Wiley Online Library, and PubMed databases. The results indicate that individual personality traits that contribute towards criminality are (i) psychopathy; (ii) low self-control

Integrating predictive frameworks and cognitive models of face perception.

The idea of a "predictive brain"-that is, the interpretation of internal and external information based on prior expectations-has been elaborated intensely over the past decade. Several domains in cognitive neuroscience have embraced this idea, including studies in perception, motor control, language, and affective, social, and clinical neuroscience. Despite the various studies that have used face stimuli to address questions related to predictive processing, there has been surprisingly little connection between this work and established cognitive models of face recognition. Here we suggest th

[Placebo Effects in Acute Pain Therapy].

Placebo and nocebo effects are currently within the focus of clinical and experimental pain research. Neurophysiological and psychophysiological mechanisms might play an important role. Placebo and nocebo effects might be mediated through the descendent inhibitory pain pathway via endogenous opioids. Apart from that three different psychological mechanisms might be relevant for placebo and nocebo effects: classical conditioning, social learning and pain expectation. An open analgesic drug application, detailed patient information about efficacy and possible adverse events (without an extensive

Venetian rule and control of plague epidemics on the Ionian Islands during 17th and 18th centuries.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, measures were taken by the Venetian administration to combat plague on the Ionian Islands. At that time, although the scientific basis of plague was unknown, the Venetians recognized its infectious nature and successfully decreased its spread by implementing an information network. Additionally, by activating a system of inspection that involved establishing garrisons along the coasts, the Venetians were able to control all local movements in plague-infested areas, which were immediately isolated. In contrast, the neighboring coast of mainland Greece, which

[Detecting phobic vertigo!].

The syndrome of phobic postural vertigo is characterized by a combination of non-rotational dizziness, subjective disturbance in the upright stance and gait, despite normal clinical balance tests. Phobic postural vertigo most frequently occurs in form of attacks. It may be accompanied by anxiety and panic symptoms. It is almost invariably associated with particular constellations of perceptual stimuli or social situations. There is a tendency for rapid conditioning, generalization, and avoidance behavior to develop. Frequently, onset of condition follows periods of particular psychosocial stre

An ethnographic account of opium consumers of Rajasthan (India): socio-medical perspective.

This communication gives an ethnographic account of 200 opium users in selected villages of three Western districts in the desert state of Rajasthan. The region is known for its traditional use of raw opium in the form of amal or doda, due to its climate and difficult living conditions. The ethnographic information suggests that opium use is in many ways integrated into the socio-cultural fabric of the local community. Self-medication with opium mitigates various health problems and the drug is also used to relieve mental distress. Besides these uses for relief of distress, the drug is used re

Anxiety, social responsiveness, and grit among patients with KCNJ11-related neonatal diabetes compared to unaffected siblings.

AIMS: Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) occurs before 6-12 months of age and is commonly caused by activating mutations in KCNJ11 (KCNJ11-NDM) or ABCC8. Because of brain expression of these mutant ATP-dependent potassium channels, a spectrum of divergent neurodevelopmental difficulties have been described, including developmental delay, epilepsy, and neonatal diabetes (DEND). However, information on anxiety, social responsiveness, and grit is limited. METHODS: Individuals with KCNJ11-NDM (N = 12) and their unaffected siblings (N = 12) were recruited through the University of Chicago Monogenic

Distinctive behavioral and neurochemical profile of social stress in male and female adolescent mice.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by increased vulnerability to social stress, closely associated with the emergence of long-term neurobiological alterations. The present study aimed to investigate the short- and long-term effects of social stress during adolescence in mice, using the classical social defeat (SD) model in males and the vicarious social defeat (VSD) model in females, and examining the role of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway in resilience and susceptibility phenotypes. METHODS: A total of 264 OF1 mice were exposed to SD or VSD between PND 26

History of childhood mistreatment and the psychological health consequences of COVID-19 for older adults.

OBJECTIVES: We examine the associations between childhood mistreatment (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional neglect) and older adults' changes in depressive symptoms from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic (September 2018-June 2020). METHODS: Using a community-based sample of older adults in North Florida (N = 581), we used ordinary least-squares regression to estimate associations between childhood mistreatments and depressive symptoms in June 2020, controlling for baseline symptoms and demographic characteristics. Additional models tested whether emotion regulat

Treatment Effect of Bumetanide in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The therapeutic effect of bumetanide on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) seems to be controversial. To obtain better evidence on the efficacy of bumetanide, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed. Methods: Randomized, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) of bumetanide treatment in children with ASD were identified through systematic review from database inception to January 17, 2021. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was carried out to examine the effect of bumetanide on the severity of symptoms of ASD as assessed by the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Social Responsiv

Public Stigma Across Addictive Behaviors: Casino Gambling, eSports Gambling, and Internet Gaming.

The negative psychological effects of public stigma on disordered gamblers have been well documented. Public stigma deters treatment-seeking and other help-seeking behaviors, and negatively impacts individuals' view of themselves. Different types of disordered gambling activities may attract different degrees of stigma. One increasingly popular form of gambling involves placing bets on the outcomes of competitive video games, also called eSports gambling. This activity shares characteristics with Internet gaming and gambling. The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of public stigma
