OBJECTIVE: Based on the Clark and Wells cognitive model of social anxiety, this study constructed a chain mediation model to explore the potential mechanisms underlying the association between cyberbullying victimization and social anxiety among college students.
METHODS: A total of 3,710 college students were surveyed with the Cyberbullying Victimization Scale, the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Ruminative Responses Scale, and the Interaction Anxiousness Scale; after data screening, 3,625 valid responses were analyzed.
RESULTS: (1) Significant positive correlations were found

Despite frequent familial visits, loneliness remains high among long-term care (LTC) residents. Existing research on LTC visitation fails to distinguish care coordination from social visitation. These forms of interaction may have distinct barriers of engagement and impacts on residents. This study aimed to investigate barriers of care coordination versus social visitation. Participants were adults (N = 175) with a close friend or relative residing in a LTC facility. Participants were recruited via ResearchMatch and completed an online survey regarding their visitation in LTC facilities and re

Socially withdrawn children frequently refrain from social activities in the presence of peers. The lack of social interaction in childhood may result from a variety of causes, including social fear and anxiety or a preference for solitude. From early childhood through to adolescence, socially withdrawn children are concurrently and predictively at risk for a wide range of negative adjustment outcomes, including socio-emotional difficulties (e.g., anxiety, low self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and internalizing problems), peer difficulties (e.g., rejection, victimization, poor friendship quali…

Social skills enable us to adapt to situational contexts in accordance with specific social and cultural norms. Problems with social skills are frequently observed in people with autism. Adapted speech therapy can be offered in order to help each patient become better integrated into society and to interact with others.

BACKGROUND: Social communication skills are critical for full participation in social activities in primary life contexts for adolescents and young adults with neurodevelopmental disorders.
METHOD: Two young adults with Prader Willi syndrome participated in an online socialisation programme with elderly and adolescent conversational partners. We used a multiple baseline across conversational partners design for each participant to investigate the effects of textual prompts and constant time delay on the number of initiations and follow-up questions. We evaluated the social validity.
RESULTS:

Brand communities represent highly valuable marketing, innovation management, and customer relationship management tools. However, applying successful marketing strategies today, and in the future, also means exploring and seizing the unprecedented opportunities of social network environments. This study combines these two social phenomena which have largely been researched separately, and aims to investigate the existence, functionality and different types of brand communities within social networks. The netnographic approach yields strong evidence of this existence; leading to a better under

Using the dot-probe paradigm, it has been shown that high social anxiety is associated with an attentional bias toward negative information. … sults showed that the training was effective in changing attentional bias in Group T. Scores of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in Group T were reduced compared to Group C, while the scores of Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and scores of Negative Evaluation Scale (FNE) showed no difference between the two groups, which suggested a limited reduction of social …

INTRODUCTION: Survivors of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and their families frequently experience persistent physical, cognitive and psychological impairments following critical illness, collectively described as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) and post-intensive care syndrome-family (PICS-F). These sequelae often emerge during the recovery period after hospital discharge and may affect long-term functioning and quality of life. Social connectivity-the extent to which individuals maintain meaningful social relationships and supportive interactions-has been associated with improved he

Social interactions in rodents are rewarding and motivating and social isolation is aversive. Accumulating evidence suggests that disruption of the social environment in adolescence has long-term effects on social interactions, on anxiety-like behavior and on stress reactivity. In previous work we showed that adolescent isolation produced increased reactivity to acute and to repeated stress in female rats, whereas lower corticosterone responses to acute stress and decreased anxiety-related behavior were noted in isolated males. These results indicate a sex specific impact on the effects of soc…

Social touch, provided by body tactile stimulation (TS), is known to trigger appeasement behavior and social stability in mammals. Recent studies have shown that TS also plays a role in regulating social interactions in fish by reducing aggression between individuals. While this effect may stem from decreased aggression in dominants, the potential contribution of increased appeasement behavior in subordinates has been overlooked. Here, we investigated whether TS facilitates the onset of appeasement behavior in the cichlid fish Geophagus iporangensis, a species that exhibits clear dominance-sub…

INTRODUCTION: Adverse social experiences profoundly alter animal behavior, yet the processes underlying context-appropriate behavior selection based on prior social interactions remain poorly understood. Existing models capture statistical patterns but are not framed in mechanistic frameworks that explain individual variability and predict behavioral outcomes.
METHODS: We address this gap by modeling social defeat in mice as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), implementing a heterarchical agent architecture-a structured network of interacting modules balancing exploration …

OBJECTIVES: Oxytocin (OT) has long been implicated in maternal bonding, sexual behavior and social affiliation behaviors. This paper reviews the wide effects of oxytocin and its key role in well-being.
METHODS: Studies were identified through Medline, Pubmed, and PsychINFO search of the English-language literature from the past sixty years (1959 to 2009) using the key word "oxytocin" in human studies. Of the 287 articles identified, 102 were selected for review.
RESULTS: OT induces a general sense of well-being including calm, improved social interactions, increased trust, and reduced fear a…

Although kin-selection theory has been widely used to explain the tendency of individuals to bias beneficial behaviors towards relatives living within the same social group, less attention has focused on kin-biased interactions between groups. For animal societies in which females emigrate, as is the case for mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), encounters between males in different groups often involve aggressive displays that can escalate to physical violence and fatal injuries. However, recent findings on the little-studied western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) indicate that interacti

Individuals exhibiting high social anxiety (HSA) typically encounter challenges in identifying threatening stimuli with varying levels of intensity in different social scenes, ultimately affecting their social interactions. However, it is not well understood how social scenes, emotional intensity, and interaction influence the recognition of threat stimuli among HSA individuals (HSAs). To address this issue, a face recognition task was administered to 20 HSA participants and 22 individuals exhibiting low social anxiety (LSA) in this study. Results indicated that during the social scene present…

Social dysfunction is the core syndrome of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and lacks effective medicine. Although numerous risk genes and relevant environmental factors have been identified, the convergent molecular mechanism underlying ASD-associated social dysfunction remains largely elusive. Here, we report aberrant activation of canonical Wnt signaling and increased glycolysis in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC, a key brain region of social function) of two ASD mouse models (Shank3-/- and valproic acid-treated mice) and their corresponding human neurons. Overexpressing β-catenin in the A

The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) is one of the major targets of research in neuroscience, with respect to social functioning. Oxytocin promotes social skills and improves the quality of face processing in individuals with social dysfunctions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although one of OT's key functions is to promote social behavior during dynamic social interactions, the neural correlates of this function remain unknown. Here, we combined acute intranasal OT (IN-OT) administration (24 IU) and fMRI with an interactive ball game and a face-matching task in individuals with ASD (N = 20…
