A noninvasive spinal device for measuring adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: validity, reliability, and factors influencing measurement difference.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common deformity, requiring regular screening and monitoring. While radiological measurements are considered the gold standard, X-ray exposure poses significant risks. A noninvasive spinal device offers a radiation-free alternative for measuring spinal curvature. This study evaluates the validity and reliability of its measurements and explores factors associated with measurement discrepancy. METHODS: This study involved AIS patients in an outpatient setting from June to August 2023. Participants underwent device measurements to assess th

Preliminary study on the treatment of prepubescent adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with Schroth exercises combined with core exercises.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity affecting 1%-3% of adolescents aged 10-18, characterized by a lateral curvature with a Cobb angle ≥10°. Current treatments, including bracing and surgery, have limitations in patient compliance and invasiveness, highlighting the need for effective non-surgical alternatives. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included five prepubescent patients (age 10-14 years, Tanner Stage 1-2) with moderate AIS (Cobb angle 20°-40°). The intervention combined Schroth exercises with core exercises, performed 3-4 times daily o

Resolution of Resting Tremors and Cervical Radiculopathy Following Chiropractic Treatment In a 58-Year-Old Male: A Case Report With 2-Year Follow-Up.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this case report is to describe chiropractic management of a patient with neck pain, cervical kyphosis, cervical radiculopathy, and resting tremors of the left arm. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 58-year-old White male presented with an insidious onset of severe neck pain and burning pain down the left arm with accompanying involuntary resting tremors of the left arm. The pain and tremors limited his ability to sit, walk, work, drive, sleep, and perform household chores, with driving and sleeping reportedly being the most substantial activities affected. Clinical testing revea

Genetics and pathogenesis of scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is defined as a lateral spine curvature of at least 10° with vertebral rotation, as seen on a posterior-anterior radiograph, often accompanied by reduced thoracic kyphosis. Scoliosis affects all age groups: idiopathic scoliosis is the most common spinal disorder in children and adolescents, while adult degenerative scoliosis typically affects individuals over fifty. In the United States, approximately 3 million new cases of scoliosis are diagnosed annually, with a predicted increase in part due to global aging. Despite its prevalence, the etiopathogenesis of scoliosis rem

Analysis of the sacroiliac joint vacuum phenomenon in adolescent thoracic idiopathic scoliosis (Lenke types 1 and 2).

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is the largest axial joint in the human body, and the SIJ vacuum phenomenon (SIJ VP) is a common finding in computed tomography studies of the abdomen, pelvis, and lumbosacral spine in adults, with the incidence increasing with age. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is an abnormal spinal curvature that appears during adolescence and places abnormal stress on the SIJs. This retrospective observational study aimed to investigate the incidence of the SIJ VP in thoracic AIS (Lenke types 1 and 2). Sixty-seven patients with AIS (age: 12-19 years) and 76 controls (age:

Increased proximal vertebral rotation is associated with shoulder imbalance after posterior spinal fusion for severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Residual shoulder imbalance is associated with suboptimal outcomes following the surgical correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) including poor patient satisfaction. In this retrospective study, we evaluate the radiographic parameters and the relationship between the global and local indices of spinal alignment with shoulder balance pre- and postoperatively utilizing EOS imaging and 3D reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective radiographic analysis was performed on patients with AIS, treated with posterior spinal fusion. Postoperative radiographs were obtained immediately

Neuromuscular scoliosis in the presence of spina bifida occulta and a transitional lumbosacral vertebra: A case report.

Common and minor birth defects, such as spina bifida occulta (SBO) and lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV), are largely asymptomatic and overlooked. However, it is important for clinicians to consider their potential impacts on spinal stability. Neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that affects children with pre-existing neuromuscular conditions that are often complex to manage. The purpose of this case report is to describe the association of dual lumbosacral anomalies with complicated NMS. A 12-year-old boy was brought to the chiropractor by his mo

Scoliosis in Pediatric Patients With Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is an anterior horn disorder that manifests as rapid onset muscle weakness or paralysis. Development of scoliosis in pediatric AFM patients has been anecdotally reported, but associated risk factors or incidence have yet to be determined. METHODS: Pediatric AFM patients treated over a 10-year period at a tertiary care center were identified. Patients were considered to have scoliosis if there was radiographic evidence of coronal curvature ≥15 degrees. Number of limbs affected, independent ambulation and head control, ventilator requirement at initial a

Teratogenic effects of 4-nonylphenol on early embryonic and larval development of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis.

Alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEs), which are widely used in detergents, paints, herbicides, insecticides, and in many other formulations, have been widely detected in aquatic environments. 4-Nonylphenol (NP) is an important APE detected at microgram levels per litre (0.1-336 μg/L) in water. The objective of the present study was to evaluate NP's toxic effects at low and high sublethal concentrations (0.1 and 1 μg/L) on embryonic development of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis at different time intervals. The data show that fertilization rate was decreased and cleavage and blastula were sev

Complications with cervical arthroplasty.

OBJECT: Spinal arthroplasty is becoming more widely performed in the treatment of degenerative cervical disc disease. Although this new technology may offer benefits over arthrodesis, it also requires that the surgeon acquire new operative techniques, and new potential complications are introduced. To determine the incidence and distribution of perioperative complications, the authors analyzed their early data obtained in a series of patients treated with the Bryan Cervical Disc prosthesis. METHODS: The authors prospectively recorded operative data, complications, and clinical and radiographi

Pedicle Screw Combined With Lateral Mass Screw Fixation in the Treatment of Basilar Invagination and Congenital C2-C3 Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical evaluation of a surgical fixation technique featuring combined use of pedicle screw and lateral mass screw (LMS). OBJECTIVE: Introduction of a novel technique for the treatment of congenital C2-C3 fusion and basilar invagination (BI). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: Posterior occipitocervical fixation using C2 pedicle screw was widely used for BI. However, in cases where BI is concurrent with congenital C2-C3 fusion, the C2 pedicles tend to be thinner than that in normal population and hence more likely to fail. We prompted to tackle the issue by combining the pedicle screw wit

Posterior vertebral column resection in early onset spinal deformities.

PURPOSE: Early onset spinal deformities (EOSD) can be life-threatening in very young children. In the growing spine, surgical intervention is often unavoidable and should be carried out as soon as possible. A deformed section of the spine not only affects the development of the remaining healthy spine, but also that of the chest wall (which influences pulmonary function), the extremities and body balance. Posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR) represents an effective surgical solution to address such problems. However, reports in the literature concerning PVCR are mostly limited to its us

The impact of curve severity on obstetric complications and regional anesthesia utilization in pregnant patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a preliminary analysis.

OBJECTIVE Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the most common type of scoliosis, often presents immediately prior to a woman's childbearing years; however, research investigating the impact of AIS on women's health, particularly pregnancy delivery outcomes, is sparse, with existing literature reporting mixed findings. Similarly limited are studies examining the change in scoliotic curve during or after pregnancy. Therefore, this study aims to determine 1) the impact of scoliotic curvature on obstetric complications (preterm births, induction of labor, and urgent/emergency caesarean section
