Impact of suicidality on delayed-onset post-traumatic stress disorder is modified by age: A two-year longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between early suicidality and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) onset in patients with physical injuries, focusing on age as a modifying factor. METHODS: At baseline, 1014 patients were evaluated for suicidality, age divided into younger (<60 years) vs. older (≥60 years) groups, and potential covariates. PTSD was diagnosed at follow-up at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, and then were categorized into early-onset (within the first six months after trauma) and delayed-onset (more than six months after trauma). Logistic regression models

Moderating role of functioning level on the association between suicidal ideation and delayed-onset post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between suicidal ideation at baseline and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals who have experienced physical injuries, with a specific focus on how this relationship is moderated by the patient's functioning level. METHODS: Participants were consecutively recruited from a trauma center and prospectively followed for two years. At baseline, suicidal ideation was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and functioning level was evaluated using the Social and Occupational Functioning Assess

Ground-based adaptive horsemanship lessons for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder: a randomized controlled pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Equine-assisted services (EAS) has received attention as a potential treatment strategy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as existing literature indicates that symptoms may decrease following EAS. Relatively little is known about the mechanisms at play during lessons and if physiological measures are impacted. The objectives of this pilot study were to 1) explore the effects of adaptive horsemanship (AH) lessons on symptoms of PTSD, hormone concentrations, and social motor synchrony; 2) determine if physiological changes occur as veterans interact with horses; and 3) exp

Validating the Spanish translation of the posttraumatic stress disorder checklist (PCL-5) in a sample of individuals with traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: There is controversy regarding the comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The present study translated the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) to Spanish and validated it in a sample of patients with TBI 6 months after the injury. METHODS: The study included 233 patients (162 males and 71 females) recruited from four Spanish hospitals within 24 h of traumatic brain injury. A total of 12.2% of the sample met the provisional PTSD diagnostic criteria, and the prevalence was equal between male and female participants. RESULTS: The analysi

Civilians under missile attack: post-traumatic stress disorder among the Jewish and Bedouin population of Southern Israel.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, Jewish and Bedouin civilians in southern Israel have faced the ongoing threat of missile attacks from Gaza, with possible mental health consequences. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Jewish and Bedouin adult civilians in southern Israel in a period with few missile attacks from Gaza, and no military operations. METHODS: The study population included 389 participants (246 Jews, 143 Bedouins) living within 40 km/25 mi from Gaza for at least 2 years and interviewed between January and March 2023 (before t

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy variants for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Background: While there are well-established treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these interventions appear to be less effective for individuals with comorbid borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for PTSD and DBT Prolonged Exposure (PE) are both effective interventions for treating these patients, but a comprehensive analysis evaluating the efficacy of these two interventions is lacking. Objective: To determine the effect sizes of PTSD-specific DBT treatments. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and pre-registered meta-analysi

Distinguishing vulnerability and resilience to posttraumatic stress disorder evaluating traumatic experiences, genetic risk and electronic health records.

What distinguishes vulnerability and resilience to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unclear. Levering traumatic experiences reporting, genetic data, and electronic health records (EHR), we investigated and predicted the clinical comorbidities (co-phenome) of PTSD vulnerability and resilience in the UK Biobank (UKB) and All of Us Research Program (AoU), respectively. In 60,354 trauma-exposed UKB participants, we defined PTSD vulnerability and resilience considering PTSD symptoms, trauma burden, and polygenic risk scores. EHR-based phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) were condu

Social support and the association between post-traumatic stress disorder and risk for long-term prescription opioid use.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common in patients with chronic pain, adversely affects chronic pain outcomes, and is associated with opioid use and adverse opioid outcomes. Social support is a robust predictor of PTSD incidence and course as well as chronic pain outcome. We determined whether the association between PTSD and persistent opioid use was modified by emotional support in a cohort of patients receiving opioids for noncancer pain. Eligible participants were ≥18 years and had completed a new period of prescription opioid use lasting 30 to 90 days. Bivariate associations betw

The burden of psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder among adults with congenital heart disease: PTSD in ACHD.

Psychological trauma, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mental health conditions are common in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). There is a gap in research examining PTSD in ACHD using the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) criteria in assessing patient characteristics and experiences with trauma-focused treatment. Surveys were offered to outpatients over a 6-month enrollment period to be completed by way of a QR code on their personal smart phone. Patient-reported items include a detailed medical and psychosocial hist

Prevalence and associated factors of post-traumatic stress disorder in pediatric populations in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent challenge faced by individuals following traumatic events. Given the substantial impact of PTSD on the well-being of young people, comprehensive assessment of the available evidence can inform more effective prevention and intervention strategies to support the mental health and resilience of children in the African context. Despite its high incidence, there has been no up-to-date systematic synthesis of evidence to measure the magnitude of PTSD in pediatric populations in Africa. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios and systemic immune-inflammation index in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade systemic inflammation has been reported in many psychiatric diseases and is described as a non-severe state of the inflammatory response. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by symptoms of avoidance, re-experiencing and hyperarousal that develop secondary to a serious traumatic event. The trauma itself creates psychological and biological changes in the individual, apart from PTSD. This complex situation has still not been clarified and researchers have tended to research on inflammatory processes. Systemic immune inflamma

Effects of blast exposure on anxiety and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among displaced Ukrainian populations.

Generalized anxiety and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among individuals forcibly displaced during war and conflict. Blast exposure may be one important contributor of such symptoms. The aims of this study were to provide data on blast-related experiences of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and to assess the influence of blast exposure on generalized anxiety, and PTSD flashbacks and nightmares. An online health needs survey was distributed to Ukrainian IDPs and refugees between April and July 2022 using Faceb

Association of pro-inflammatory cytokines with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder visiting a tertiary care hospital in Kathmandu.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that can occur after trauma. Although inflammatory markers such as cytokines are found altered in trauma and PTSD, there is no consensus regarding which can be considered as biomarkers. Studies from South Asia region is also rare. We studied cytokines among trauma affected patients and matched healthy controls. Fifty patients (cases) with trauma, visiting the University hospital in Kathmandu and thirty-nine healthy controls were selected, and the levels of cytokines were determined using a Luminex IS 200. We compared the levels of the

The devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria: Post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health issues among the victims.

Natural catastrophes like earthquakes have the potential to be fatal by claiming lives and harming infrastructure, the environment, and mental health. Victims may experience symptoms such as anxiety, despondency, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria caused enormous destruction and a high number of fatalities, which is growing by the day. The past examples of earthquakes in China, South Asia, and Turkey imply that there is a possibility that the victims may feel isolated and under psychological stress. Our article outlines the high strategies to minimise th
