Bees remain heat tolerant after acute exposure to desiccation and starvation.

Organisms may simultaneously face thermal, desiccation and nutritional stress under climate change. Understanding the effects arising from t … bee heat tolerance. We found that neither the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) nor the time to heat stupor was significantly impacted by sublethal desiccation exposure in either species. Similarly, starvation followed by moderate sublethal desiccation did not affect the average CTmax estimate, but it did increase its variance. Our results suggest that su …

Prognostic Factors For Functional Outcome in Patients with Mesencephalic Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Mesencephalic hemorrhage (MH) is a rare presentation of spontaneous intraparenchymal hemorrhage. This study aims to evaluate p … s studied, 26 (38%) presented with normal consciousness, 22 (32%) with lethargy , and 20 (29%) with stupor or coma. There was no cause of hemorrhage in 26 (65%) patients with FO and 12 (43%) with UO (p=0.059). In univariate analyses, neither arteriovenous malformations (p=0.33) nor cavernomas (p=0.19) were associated with outcome. Multiple logistic regre …

The phenotype of delirium based on a close reading of diagnostic criteria.

OBJECTIVE: Although delirium is well known to acute care clinicians, the features required for its diagnosis and how to understand and opera … tivity describes a third core feature, including motor and sleep/wake cycle disturbances. Excluding stupor (wherein mental content cannot be assessed due to reduced arousal) from delirium, as in DSM-5-TR, is appropriate for a psychiatric diagnosis, but the brain injury exclusion in ICD-11 is unjustified. CONCLUSIONS: The delirium phenotype involves a di …

Acute right ventricular failure evoked by trauma induced thyroid storm supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Cardiac arrest due to thyroid storm is a very rare clinical feature with high mortality that presents as multiorgan dysfunction. The mortality rate under this condition is close to 30%, even with appropriate treatment. Most thyroid storms occur in patients with long-standing untreated hyperthyroidism. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old woman, who had no specific medical history, was admitted with stupor mentality after a pedestrian traffic accident. DIAGNOSIS: The patient had a Burch and Wartofsky score of 80, well beyond the criteria for diagnosis of a thyroid storm (>45 points). I…

COVID-19-Associated Acute Brain Dysfunction Related to Sepsis.

In global term, as of November 30, 2020, over 30 million people has been infected by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and more than 10,000,000 of them died of acute organ failure. Our reviews have shown that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have life-threatening acute brain dysfunction (ABD), ranging from altered mental status/delirium to stupor/coma. Altered mental status/delirium was the most common manifestation of ABD caused by severe COVID-19. The prevalence of altered mental sta…

The Development of Kraepelin's Mature Diagnostic Concept of Catatonic Dementia Praecox: A Close Reading of Relevant Texts.

Through a close reading of texts, this essay traces the development of catatonia from its origination in Kahlbaum's 1874 monograph to Kraepe … ly noted, and outcome was frequently good. While agreeing on the importance of key catatonic signs (stupor, muteness, posturing, verbigeration, and excitement), Kraepelin narrowed Kahlbaum's concept, dropping the phasic course, emphasizing positive psychotic symptoms and poor outcome. In his fourth to sixth editions, as he tried to integrate his three DP …

Why do neurologists miss catatonia in neurology emergency? A case series and brief literature review.

Catatonia is a well-described clinical syndrome characterized by features that range from mutism, negativism and stupor to agitation, mannerisms and stereotype. Causes of catatonia may range from organic brain disorders to psychiatric conditions. Despite a characteristic syndrome, catatonia is grossly under diagnosed. The reason for missed diagnosis of catatonia in neurology setting is not clear. Poor awareness is an unlikely cause because catatonia is taught among conditions with deregulated consciousness like vegetative state, locked-in state and akinetic mutism. We determined the proportion…

[Single burr hole surgery for acute spontaneous subdural hematoma in the aged: patient reports of three cases].

The method of treatment for acute spontaneous subdural hematoma in aged patients is controversial. Three cases of acute spontaneous subdural hematoma in aged patients, treated by single burr hole drainage without irrigation, were reported. The first case, an 80-year-old male was admitted with complaints of headache and stupor without any history of head trauma. CT revealed a left subdural hematoma with mixed density. Intractable facial convulsion occurred three days after admission. Single burr hole drainage was performed to remove the hematoma, and facial convulsion disappeared one week after…

A fatal case of chlorate poisoning: confirmation by ion chromatography of body fluids.

A 49-year-old male chemical industry worker was admitted to intensive care with a 24-hour history of respiratory failure, vomiting, headache, stupor, arterial hypotension, and cyanosed face and limbs. He had acute haemolysis (3.9 g/L plasma haemoglobin concentration) and 30% methaemoglobinaemia. Whereas the search for alcohol, barbiturates and opiates was negative, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants were present. The patient was in fact being treated with fluvoxamine, amitryptiline, and alprazolam. As the clinical and biological signs suggested chlorate poisoning, chlorate was looke…

Valproate-induced coma: case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of hyperammonemia without hepatic dysfunction as a possible cause of lethargy, stupor, and coma in a woman after valproic acid (VPA) administration, and discuss the possible different mechanisms of ammonia elevation and coma. CASE SUMMARY: A woman diagnosed with complex partial seizures that secondarily generalize was treated with phenytoin (PHT) 250 mg/d for 18 years. Three months before admission, this dosage was increased to 300 mg/d and phenobarbital (PB) 100 mg/d was added because the seizures were incompletely controlled. The patient developed a progressive i…

Naltrindole retards tolerance development to morphine-induced effects on EEG and EEG power spectra.

In the present study, EEG and EEG power spectra were used to assess the effects of naltrindole, a selective delta opioid antagonist, on the development of tolerance to morphine. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with cortical EEG electrodes and permanent indwelling i.c.v. and i.v. cannulas. Twice daily for 7 days, rats were pretreated with either i.c.v. naltrindole (20 nmol) or i.c.v. water, 20 min before i.v. morphine (10 mg/kg) injections. The treatments produced EEG slow-wave bursts and associated behavioral stupor. The amount and duration of these effects decreased less rapid…

Thalamic stroke. Presentation and prognosis of infarcts and hemorrhages.

Thalamic strokes in 62 patients selected from the Stroke Data Bank were studied to determine differences among 18 infarctions (INF), 23 localized hemorrhages (ICH), and 21 hematomas with ventricular extension (IVH). Stupor or coma at onset occurred more frequently in the IVH (62%) than in the INF (6%) or ICH (13%) groups and was reflected in significantly lower median Glasgow Coma Scores in the IVH group (7) than in the INF (15) and ICH (14) groups. Although ocular movements were more frequently abnormal in the IVH group compared with the ICH and INF groups, no significant differences were fou…
