3D intraoral scanning techniques support the effects of crown morphology on dental caries.

BACKGROUND: With the development and utilization of three-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanning (IOS) technology, the morphological characteristics of teeth were quantitatively assessed. In this research, we aimed to explore the prevalence of dental caries in relation to each measurable morphological indicator of the tooth body via 3D intraoral scanning techniques. METHODS: A hospital-based single-centre study was conducted at our hospital from Dec. 2021 to Apr. 2023. A total of 53 patients were involved in the study, providing complete morphological data for 79 teeth. Each patient completed an

Static Loading of Different Intraradicular Preparation Depths of Trinia Endocrowns in Maxillary Canines.

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the fracture resistance of canine teeth restored using TRINIA Endocrowns with three different types of preparations (2, 3, and 4 intracanal preparations). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty maxillary-extracted canines were collected. All teeth were fixed in orthodontic acrylic resin and decapitated at the level of the proximal cemento-enamel junction (CEJ). After being endodontically treated, specimens were distributed equally between 3 groups (n = 10) with different preparation depths (GT: 2 mm Intraradicular Preparation, GH: 3 mm Intraradicular Preparatio

Gummy Smile and Short Tooth Syndrome - Part 2: Periodontal Surgical Approaches in Interdisciplinary Treatment.

One of the most frequent causes of gummy smile is an altered eruption, ie, the gingival margins are located at a more coronal position than normal. These cases can be successfully treated with a periodontal surgical approach. Several techniques may be used, depending on the different anatomic variations. The surgery must be carefully planned so as to avoid discrepancies between the soft tissues and the teeth. Clinical examination and radiographic evaluation will allow clinicians to determine the position of the gingival margin, bone crest, and cemento-enamel junction and thus elicit a correct

A case report of patient practising yoga leading to dental erosion.

The article presents the case of a patient who was practising Yoga (Kunjal kriya) which led to dental erosion. Dental erosion can be due to extrinsic or intrinsic causes. The intrinsic causes include vomiting due to anorexia nervosa, regurgitation due to abnormality in gastro-intestinal tract or rumination. A 38-year-old male patient presented with a rare aetiology of dental erosion. He had practiced kunjal kriya one of the yogic exercises described in ancient India. In kunjal kriya the patient vomits on an empty stomach in order to clean his or her gastro-intestinal tract. The patient had pra

Bilateral connation of permanent mandibular incisors: a case report.

Connated teeth are the consequences of developmental anomalies leading to the eruption of joined elements. According to current definitions, gemination occurs when one tooth bud tries to divide, while fusion occurs if two buds unite. Clinical experience shows, however, that diagnosis can be complicated due to superimposed anomalies. This report describes a unique case of bilateral fusion of permanent mandibular incisors and discusses the differential diagnosis and possible future treatment options anticipated for this particular case.

Early root migration after a mandibular third molar coronectomy.

PURPOSE: This prospective cohort study aimed to assess early root migration after a coronectomy of the mandibular third molar at 2 and 6 months after surgery. METHODS: We included all patients treated with a coronectomy of an impacted mandibular third molar. The primary outcome measure was the extent of postoperative root migration after 2 and 6 months. Migration was measured as the distance between the root complex and a fixed point on the inferior alveolar canal. The secondary aim was to identify factors (age, impaction pattern, and patient sex) that affected the extent of root migration.

Influence of Post Length, Post Material, and Substance Loss on the Fracture Resistance of Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Laboratory Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of post length, post material, and substance loss on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 96 extracted human mandibular first premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 12 test groups (n = 8 each) based on the number of residual walls (one/two), post material (glass-fiber/titanium), and post length (5 mm, 7.5 mm, and 10 mm). After luting the posts, specimens received a composite resin core and a crown preparation with a 1.5-mm ferrule. Cast cobalt-chromium crowns were cemented usi

Regulation of dental enamel shape and hardness.

Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions guide tooth development through its early stages and establish the morphology of the dentin surface upon which enamel will be deposited. Starting with the onset of amelogenesis beneath the future cusp tips, the shape of the enamel layer covering the crown is determined by five growth parameters: the (1) appositional growth rate, (2) duration of appositional growth (at the cusp tip), (3) ameloblast extension rate, (4) duration of ameloblast extension, and (5) spreading rate of appositional termination. Appositional growth occurs at a mineralization front alon

Lateral incisor root resorption and active orthodontic treatment in the early mixed dentition.

AIM: To evaluate the presence of root resorption in the lateral incisor after active orthodontic treatment in the early mixed dentition. METHODS: Twenty-six children treated at the Children's Clinic of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario were examined radiographically for lateral incisors root resorption before and after early active treatment to align upper incisors (2 x 4 appliance). In addition, canine inclinations to the midline and to the long axis of the lateral incisor as well as the most medial position of the canine crown were measured a

Molar development in common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Numerous studies have reported on enamel and dentine development in hominoid molars, although little is known about intraspecific incremental feature variation. Furthermore, a recent histological study suggested that there is little or no time between age at chimpanzee crown completion and age at molar eruption, which is unlikely given that root growth is necessary for tooth eruption. The study presented here redefines growth standards for chimpanzee molar teeth and examines variation in incremental features. The periodicity of Retzius lines in a relatively large sample was found to be 6 or 7

Health economic evaluation of forced orthodontic extrusion of extensively damaged teeth: up to 6-year results from a clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical data on retaining extensively damaged teeth using forced orthodontic extrusion followed by restorative rehabilitation are scarce, and economic evaluations are basically absent. A health economic evaluation of this method was performed based on a clinical study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a convenience sample of individuals recruited from routine care, extensively damaged teeth were orthodontically extruded prior to restoration. Patients were followed up for up to 6 years. The health outcome was tooth retention time. Direct medical, non-medical, and indirect initial and fol

Continuous tooth eruption adjacent to single-implant restorations in the anterior maxilla: aetiology, mechanism and outcomes - A review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Dental trauma and congenital anodontia are common causes of anodontia in the anterior maxilla. The proposed restorative treatment constitutes a challenge for many dentists, particularly if it is a question of a young patient who has not yet completed skeletal and dental development. Current treatments for anterior maxillary anodontia include: fixed or removable partial dentures; orthodontic closure of interdental spaces; and dental implants. Dental implants do not move with the dento-alveolar complex during the growth period of the maxilla. Therefore, many researchers maintain th
