INTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell hyperproliferative disorder resulting in a classic presentation including anemia, renal dysfunction, bone pain, and hypercalcemia. Many patients with MM also develop unrelated comorbid conditions, such as hypertension or congestive heart failure, that warrant the prescription of calcium-channel blockers (CCBs). Little is known about how MM-associated hypercalcemia could be impacted by CCB use. This study aimed to determine how CCBs could impact outcomes in patients with MM.
METHODS: Utilizing TriNetX's US Collaborative Network and ICD-10 co

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and demand in Ontario for catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias guided by advanced nonfluoroscopy mapping systems. Particular attention was paid to ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF).
CLINICAL NEED: Tachycardia Tachycardia refers to a diverse group of arrhythmias characterized by heart rates that are greater than 100 beats per minute. It results from abnormal firing of electrical impulses from heart tissues or abnormal electrical pathways in the heart because of scars. Tachycardia may be asymptomatic, or it may adversely affect

INTRODUCTION: Chronic total occlusions (CTO) are commonly associated with multivessel coronary disease (MVD). Although coronary artery revascularization via percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has demonstrated better outcomes than medical therapy alone for single-vessel disease in various clinical trials, the best approach to revascularization in MVD remains complex and less explored. This observational study compared the acute in-hospital outcomes of PCI and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in the revascularization of chronic total occlusion with multivessel disease. Considering th

Over the past seven decades, significant advancements and innovations have occurred in the field of percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure using transcatheter-based devices. This article focuses on the current literature surrounding the three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved devices for ASD and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure in the United States, namely, the Amplatzer Septal Occluder (ASO), Amplatzer Cribriform Occluder, and Gore Cardioform ASD Occluder. The ASO has been widely used since its FDA approval in 2001. Studies have shown its high success rate in closing ASDs

AIMS: Several studies demonstrated that tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with poor clinical outcomes. However, data on patients with TR who experienced acute heart failure (AHF) remains scarce. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between TR and clinical outcomes in patients admitted with AHF, using a large-scale Japanese AHF registry.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The current study population consisted of 3735 hospitalized patients due to AHF in the Kyoto Congestive Heart Failure (KCHF) registry. TR grades were assessed according to the routine clinical practice at each

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers of atrial dysfunction or "cardiopathy" are associated with embolic stroke risk. However, it is unclear if this risk is mediated by undiagnosed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or flutter (AF). We aim to determine whether atrial cardiopathy biomarkers predict AF on continuous heart-rhythm monitoring after embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS).
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study including all patients with ESUS undergoing 30 days of ambulatory heart-rhythm monitoring to look for AF between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2015. We reviewed medical

BACKGROUND: The transcatheter closure of the atrial septal defect (ASD) has become an alternative technique to surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the immediate, short, and intermediate-term results of the transcatheter closure of the secundum ASD with the Amplatzer Septal Occluder (ASO) in adult Iranian patients.
METHODS: Between December 2004 and July 2008, the transcatheter closure of the ASD using the ASO was attempted in 58 consecutive, adult patients. The mean age of the patients was 37.1 ± 12.7 years (range = 19 - 75 years). All the procedures were performed under

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare direct current and radiofrequency ablation of the atrioventricular (AV) junction in a prospective randomized fashion.
BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation of the AV junction can be performed using either direct current shocks or radiofrequency energy. To date, these two techniques have never been compared prospectively or in a randomized study.
METHODS: Forty patients with drug-refractory uncontrolled atrial fibrillation-flutter (38 patients) or inappropriate sinus tachycardia (2 patients) were randomly assigned to undergo direct current ablation

AIMS: We aim to assess the risk of thrombus-associated events (TAE) in patients with heart failure (HF) without atrial fibrillation (AF) and develop an effective scoring system for a risk stratification model.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective study included 450 patients (median age 64.0 years, interquartile range [55.0, 75.0]; 31.6% women) hospitalized for HF without AF and atrial flutter, but with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 55% and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class of III-IV. A median follow-up of 47 months was conducted. In the present study, TAE d

BACKGROUND: Atrial and junctional tachyarrhythmias occur frequently during the perioperative period for congenital cardiac surgery and can be a cause of increased morbidity and mortality. These rhythm disturbances that may be well tolerated in a normal heart can cause significant hemodynamic instability in patients with congenital heart defects, particularly during the postcardiopulmonary bypass period. Management of these arrhythmias presents more of a challenge, since currently available antiarrhythmic drugs can be ineffective and poorly tolerated. In this study, we examined the possible eff

Cardiac arrhythmias can present as benign ectopics or as life-threatening arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Clinical cardiac electrophysiology is the study of the electrophysiology of the heart and all aspects of management of cardiac arrhythmias. The invasive electrophysiological study was initially purely diagnostic, but recent advances in technology has allowed us to intervene and hence the term interventional electrophysiology. The interventional therapies include permanent pacing for bradyarrhythmias, arrhythmia surgery for arrhythmias, percutaneous catheter ablation and implantable d

OBJECTIVE: To determine the basis for cardiac consultations for pediatric patients in an academic hospital setting.
METHODS: The activities of the cardiology consultation service were tabulated for 12 months, from July 2001 to June 2002. Patients were identified from 4 sources, ie, a monthly log of patient encounters maintained by the consultation service, encounter forms submitted to the billing office, consultation notes maintained in a central file, and a departmental list of echocardiography studies. Patients who required clearance for noncardiac surgical procedures were generally evaluat

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common and serious arrhythmia that frequently complicates cardiac amyloidosis (CA), a rare condition characterized by amyloid deposits in the heart. The coexistence of AF in CA patients significantly increases the risk of heart failure, stroke, and other life-threatening complications; however, the therapeutic approach to managing AF in CA patients remains underexplored. Thus, this review discusses the features of AF in CA patients, recent research on the development of effective treatment options, and strategies for future therapies. A comprehensive review of the
