Pure somaesthetic alexia: somaesthetic-verbal disconnection for letters.

We studied a patient who manifested a bilateral reading disorder through the somaesthetic modality, without deficit of elementary tactile sensation or tactile object naming, due to a left parietal infarct. Detailed investigation established the following points. (i) The patient showed normal function on elementary somaesthetic examination, normal function on high level tactile perception, except for minimal impairment of the right hand on the two-point discrimination test, and normal latencies on the somatosensory evoked potential in both hands. (ii) The patient had difficulty in reading lette

[Comparative study of normal subjects and obsessive compulsive subjects on intrusive thoughts and memory].

Four surveys have shown that more than 80% of normal subjects have obsessive thoughts with content similar to those found in obsessive compulsive patients. "Abnormal" and "normal" intrusive thoughts do not differ in content but in duration, frequency and rejectability. Thirteen DSM III-R non-depressed obsessive compulsive patients with checking rituals were compared with 13 sex-, age-, and education matched control subjects. Our study compared the content of abnormal and normal obsessions. No between-group difference was found suggesting that a sub-group of obsessive compulsive patients with c

Sign language and motor functioning in students with autistic disorder.

Sign language production of 14 low-functioning students diagnosed with autistic disorder was examined. Videotapes of the students signing with their teachers were analyzed for frequency and accuracy of sign location, handshape, and movement production. The location aspect of signs was produced more accurately by the subjects than either the handshape or movement aspects. Wide individual differences were evident among the students in the number of signs they produced, accuracy of sign formation, and performance on measures of motor functioning. Students' sign vocabulary size and accuracy of sig

Severe anterograde amnesia with onset in childhood as a result of anoxic encephalopathy.

Our patient (M.S.) had an abrupt onset of amnesia due to a respiratory arrest at the age of 8 years and has been followed by one of us (A.L.R.) for 19 years. A specially designed MRI study indicated that the neuroanatomical localization of his lesion is restricted to the hippocampal formation bilaterally. Comparison of M.S.'s present IQ and academic scores with earlier scores revealed that his literacy skills, certain basic language functions and vocabulary development were arrested by his memory disorder. In contrast, development of mathematical skill was less curtailed, and verbal and nonver

[Combined verbal and sign language for promoting communication development in non-verbal or or pre-verbal children and adolescents with mental retardation].

Conveying alternative and augmentative approaches to communication is becoming necessary for increasing numbers of persons with mental retardation with no or poor oral skills. The preverbal and nonverbal forms of communicating, hence, have special relevance in a developmental context. A natural extension of gestic messages, it in particular is the use of signing that is apt to enhance speech and language acquisition and bring about distinct improvement in understanding and making oneself understood. Exchanging messages by sign language can reveal to the child the significance of his/her own be

Contributions of right inferior temporal-occipital cortex to visual word and non-word priming.

Little is known about the neural substrates of indirect forms of memory such as priming. Electrophysiological (ERP) and behavioral data were recorded from controls and three patients with damage in the right parahippocampal and lingual gyri, with variable extension into posterior hippocampus and striate/extrastriate cortex. Visually presented words and non-words were repeated after one of three delays in a lexical decision task. The late positive ERP deflection related to stimulus repetition was diminished at all scalp sites, suggesting dysfunction in a neural system associated with priming. T

The interaction of phonetics and phonology in developmental verbal dyspraxia: two case studies.

Approaches to the treatment of developmental verbal dyspraxia based upon current theories about phonological development are explored. The author presents the concept of "bridging"; for example, making the transition from one sound to another or from one word to the next, as a reflection of the child's ability to generate hierarchical linguistic structures. The author suggests that children who have developmental dyspraxia must build phonological systems despite the fact that their ability to discover and use these hierarchical structures is impaired. Idiosyncratic patterns are expected, and s

Diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing using few-shot learning.

Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a common and clinically significant disorder characterized by recurrent airflow limitation and oxygen desaturation during sleep, which can lead to serious cardiovascular and metabolic complications. Accurate and early diagnosis of SDB is crucial for timely clinical intervention and risk stratification, yet diagnostic results are often influenced by substantial variations in physicians' clinical experience and diagnostic skills across different regions, particularly in large-scale screening and real-world medical settings. However, existing diagnostic methods

Transitive inference in a clinical childhood sample with a focus on autism spectrum disorder.

Transitive inference (TI) has a long history in the study of human development. There have, however, few pediatric studies that report clinical diagnoses have tested trial-and-error TI learning, in which participants infer item relations, rather than evaluate them explicitly from verbal descriptions. Children aged 8-10 underwent a battery of clinical assessments and received a range of diagnoses, potentially including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders (AD), specific learning disorders (SLD), and/or communication disorders (CD). The profile of very preterm children on academic achievement. A cross-population comparison with children with specific learning disorders.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm (VPT) children showed delays in reading, spelling and maths, but their academic achievement profile is not clearly understood. AIMS: VPT children were compared with children with specific learning disorders (SLD) and typically developing (TD) children on academic achievement, considering cognitive and linguistic phenotypic markers. A learning profile analysis was also performed. METHODS: We included 170 10-year old monolingual Italian-speaking children (37 VPT, 28 SLD, 105 TD) assessing cognitive, linguistic and academic skills. RESULTS: On academic achievements VPT

Study of a set of reading precursors among Chilean children with Down syndrome.

Learning to read for children with Down syndrome is relevant because of the impact this ability has on learning and the development of autonomy. Previous research has described reading development in this population, but it is not clear if the process and precursors are the same in a transparent language like Spanish. This study explores performance in a set of precursors (phonological awareness, visual recognition, vocabulary, letter knowledge and verbal reasoning) in 42 children with Down syndrome between 6:0 and 10:11 years. We hypothesized that the participants would have a lower performan

Understanding the Unfamiliar: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Pediatric Residents' Learning about Children with Severe Motor and Intellectual Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMIDs) require complex care involving both technical skill and emotional presence. Pediatric residents often lack meaningful exposure to such patients, and little is known about how they make sense of these learning experiences. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore how pediatric residents experienced a three-month rotation at a facility for children with SMID in Japan. Four residents were interviewed twice during their rotations. Interviews were transcribed

The modulation of acute stress on model-free and model-based reinforcement learning in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Experiencing acute stress is common in behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder. Additionally, like most substance-induced addictions, aberrant decision-making wherein a reactive habit-induced response (conceptualized as a Model-free [MF] in reinforcement learning) suppresses a flexible goal-directed response (conceptualized as a Model-based [MB]) is also common in gambling disorder. In the current study we investigated the influence of acute stress on the balance between habitual response and the goal-directed system. METHODS: A sample of N = 116 problem gamblers

Onset Age of Substance Use and Neuropsychological Performance in Hospital Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have found neurocognitive deficits in adolescents following substance abuse. Predisposing risk factors may further impact vulnerability to neurocognitive deficits. Little is known about the cognitive performance of adult onset substance users compared to earlier onset users. This study aims to explore differences in neuropsychological functioning between early (EOAs) and late onset substance abusers (LOAs) when the effects of confounding factors are controlled. METHOD: Data for this cross-sectional study was collected from hospital patients. A total of 164 patients

Numerous biological and psychological factors associated with impaired neurological functioning have been identified as common among the hom … reading abilities were found to be relatively low, and the incidence of impairments in reading, new verbal learning, memory, and attention and concentration was high. These findings suggest that the homeless men in this study had considerable assessment and treatment needs that were not being met by most of the health and social services offered to them.

[A pilot study: neuropsychological rehabilitation of patients with solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy].

Fourteen patients with chronic toxic encephalopathy underwent a neuropsychological intervention comprising crisis therapy, information about the disease, and cognitive training. Evaluation showed the patients to have experienced substantial improvement in their daily life and family relations as a result of the intervention. Their affective symptoms decreased and their verbal memory improved. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measurements showed training-dependent changes of functional activity related to change in memory strategy. This rCBF change had disappeared six months later, however,

Persistent disturbances of cognitive functions in patients with pseudotumor cerebri.

In a series of 20 consecutive patients with pseudotumor cerebri, five patients had a protracted course of the disease with complaints of persistent disturbances in learning and memory functions. Neuropsychological examination disclosed a light general intellectual impairment with most marked disturbances in verbal tests. After intensive medical treatment or ventriculo-atrial shunt operation, psychological re-examination showed improvement in the test results in accordance with the improvement of the patients' occupational and social situation.
