Acinetobacter baumannii is a high-priority pathogen due to its extensive antimicrobial resistance and persistence in clinical environments. Quorum sensing (QS) and toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems regulate virulence and stress tolerance, yet their interconnection remains unclear. We analyzed transcriptomic data (GSE87009) from A. baumannii treated with 3-oxo-C12-HSL using WGCNA, differential expression, and machine learning (LASSO and Random Forest). To identify potential inhibitors of the HigBA TA system, we performed molecular docking of 202 chemically diverse compounds - comprising approved dru…

Polymicrobial infections with Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) are increasingly frequent in urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, experimental data describing their interactions in clinical isolates under co-culture conditions remain limited. In this study, three clinical isolates of both A. baumannii and C. albicans were co-isolated from urine samples with UTIs, then mono-cultured and co-cultured at 24, 48, and 72 h for biofilm quantification by crystal violet assay. The expression levels of bacterial (ompA, bap, abaI) and fungal (ALS3, HWP1, ERG11…

Acinetobacter baumannii is a formidable nosocomial pathogen whose biofilm production is a key contributor to its multidrug resistance. This study reveals the significant antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of Salvia abrotanoides essential oils (EOs) against MDR and XDR A. baumannii. GC-MS analysis identified 19 novel compounds within the leaf (L-EO) and flower (F-EO) extracts. F-EO exhibited greater potency, inhibiting bacterial growth and biofilm formation at 1.75 mg/mL and 0.9 mg/mL, respectively. At sub-inhibitory concentrations, both EOs caused substantial downregulation (>84%) of the …

Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterococcus faecalis are opportunistic bacteria frequently associated with hospital-acquired infections. A. baumannii nosocomial infections in intensive care units are a worldwide problem, with high mortality rates. It may also develop rapidly multidrug resistance (MDR), extensive drug resistance (XDR), and even pan-drug resistance (PDR). Colistin resistance which is an example of pan-drug resistance, is highly alarming as it's used as a last-line antibiotic. Microbes capable of crossing epithelial barriers such as E. faecalis have developed novel strategies to cou…

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae are opportunistic bacterial pathogens responsible for hospital-acquired infections in veterinary medicine. Infection with these bacteria always requires urgent antimicrobial therapy. However, there is no evidence of studies that have investigated the antimicrobial drug resistance profile of these organisms in a veterinary setting in South Africa. This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae from clinical specimens obtained from dogs presented at a veterinary academic hospital.…
