Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries in Mice during Adolescence Cause Sexually Dimorphic Behavioral Deficits and Neuroinflammatory Dynamics.

Adolescent brain injuries have devastating impacts on lifelong health given that adolescence is a critical period for brain development. Adolescents are susceptible to mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) acquired from collisions in contact sports, which are often sustained in a repetitive nature (repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries; RmTBIs), and cause compounding, sexually dimorphic neurological deficits. Neuroinflammation accompanies RmTBIs and may be a central driving force for chronic neurological decline. To date, the impact of neuroinflammation and sex-specific dynamics during adol

A Qualitative Study of Factors That Influence Contraceptive Choice among Adolescent School-Based Health Center Patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods can prevent teen pregnancy yet remain underutilized by adolescents in the United States. Pediatric providers are well positioned to discuss LARCs with adolescents, but little is known about how counseling should occur in pediatric primary care settings. We explored adolescent womens' attitudes and experiences with LARCs to inform the development of adolescent-centered LARC counseling strategies. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of one-on-one interviews. SETTING: Participants were recruited from 2 urban school-based, primary car

Adolescent varicocele: a surgical conundrum.

Adolescent varicocele is a common yet clinically complex condition, affecting up to 15% of postpubertal boys. The natural history and long-term reproductive implications in adolescents are not as well understood as the association of varicocele with infertility in the adult population. As such, the primary challenge in the management of adolescent varicocele lies in identifying the subset of boys at risk for impaired spermatogenesis while avoiding unnecessary intervention in those who may normalize testicular development as puberty progresses. The pathophysiology of varicocele-related testicul

Differential gene responses 3 days following infarction in the fetal and adolescent sheep heart.

There are critical molecular mechanisms that can be activated to induce myocardial repair, and in humans this is most efficient during fetal development. The timing of heart development in relation to birth and the size/electrophysiology of the heart are similar in humans and sheep, providing a model to investigate the repair capacity of the mammalian heart and how this can be applied to adult heart repair. Myocardial infarction was induced by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in fetal (105 days gestation when cardiomyocytes are proliferative) and adolescent sheep (6 mo

Teacher-student relationships and social support as drivers of learning and behaviour in Malaysian gifted students.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships among parental involvement, teacher-student relationships, child/adolescent social support, self-regulated learning, and behavioural outcomes (strengths and difficulties) among Malaysian gifted students. Specifically, the study investigated whether teacher-student relationships mediate the relationship between parental involvement and student outcomes and whether child/adolescent social support moderates the relationship between parental involvement and self-regulated learning and behavioural outcomes. METHODOLOGY: A total of 308 gifted students

Family Conflict and Neighborhood Context in Latino Adolescent Depression: An ABCD Study.

Latino adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of depressive symptoms relative to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States, yet the multilevel factors shaping these disparities remain understudied. Family conflict is an important predictor of adolescent mental health, particularly within Latino communities where family relationships occupy a central role in social and emotional development. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study four-year follow-up (N = 1,796), we examined whether neighborhood social vulnerability moderated the associati

Striatum on the anxiety map: Small detours into adolescence.

Adolescence is the most sensitive period for the development of pathological anxiety. Moreover, specific neural changes associated with the striatum might be related to adolescent vulnerability to anxiety. Up to now, the study of anxiety has primarily focused on the amygdala, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), while the striatum has typically not been considered as part of the anxiety system. This review proposes the addition of the striatum, a complex, multi-component structure, to the anxiety network by underscoring two lines o

Family obligation values as a protective and vulnerability factor among low-income adolescent girls.

Adolescents' beliefs about family obligation often reflect cultural variations in their family context, and thus are important for understanding development among diverse youth. In this study, we test hypotheses about the role of family obligation values in risk behavior and mental health in a sample of 194 low-income adolescent girls (mean age = 15.2; 58% Latina, 28% African-American/Black). We hypothesized that family obligation values can be both a protective and vulnerability factor, depending on the type of outcome and the presence of other risk factors. Across the sample, higher family o

Adolescent alcohol consumption alters sex-specific behaviors associated with prefrontal functional connectivity in mice.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is one of the last brain regions to fully mature, making it particularly sensitive to stress and drug use early in life. Both human and rodent studies find long-lasting behavioral changes after adolescent alcohol exposure that implicate underlying disruptions in PFC development, including structural abnormalities and altered brain functional connectivity. Few rodent studies have been conducted to understand the network-level implications of these disruptions. We assessed how adolescent binge-like alcohol consumption in a drinking in the dark (DID) model affected adu

Evaluation of the effects of antiepileptic monotherapy on pubertal hormones in adolescent girls with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy often begins in childhood or adolescence, a period marked by significant hormonal changes. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) like valproic acid (VPA) and levetiracetam (LEV) are commonly used, but VPA is associated with notable endocrine side effects, particularly in adolescent girls. This raises concerns about drug choice during puberty. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of VPA and LEV monotherapy on pubertal hormone profiles, menstrual characteristics, physical development, and gynecologic ultrasound findings in adolescent girls with primary epilepsy. METHODS: This prospectiv

An integrated model: marital effect on adolescent behavioral problems through siblings.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have simultaneously focused on the effects of marital conflict and marital intimacy on adolescent development, and little is known about the role of sibling relationships. Thus, this study examined the association between marital relationships and adolescent behavioral problems, including depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior. At the same time, we explored the mediating role of sibling hostility and sibling affection and the moderating effect of birth order in multichild families in China. METHODS: Participants included 842 adolescents (Mage = 12.60, 46.2% boys…

Targeting retrieval of methamphetamine reward memory in the context of REM sleep deprivation: Age-dependent role of GABAB receptors.

GABAB receptors play a modulatory role in the mechanisms underlying drug addiction, sleep problems, and aging; however, there are few studies addressing their relationships to each other. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether blockade of these receptors affects methamphetamine (METH) reward memory in adult and adolescent rapid-eye movement sleep-deprived (RSD) rats. Adolescent and adult male Wistar rats were subjected to RSD for seven days. They were then conditioned to receive methamphetamine (METH; 2 mg/kg, ip) during an eight-day conditioning period. METH reward memory was then rea

Psychological maltreatment and adolescent internet harassment perpetration: The mediating role of deviant peer affiliation and the moderating role of self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Psychological maltreatment has been regarded as a risk factor for adolescent internet harassment. However, previous studies failed to take family, peer, and individual factors into account comprehensively when comes to adolescent internet harassment perpetration. OBJECTIVE: Based on the Social-Ecological Diathesis-Stress Model, the present study established a moderated mediation model to investigate the mediating role of deviant peer affiliation in the association between psychological maltreatment and adolescent internet harassment perpetration, as well as the moderating role of

Skin surface lipidomics revealed the correlation between lipidomic profile and grade in adolescent acne.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a multifactorial skin disorder frequently observed during adolescence with different grades of severity. The crucial factors of acne are the increase of lipids secretion and the change of composition on the skin surface lipid (SSL). However, there are no studies on the changes of lipid composition and content between different grades of adolescent acne in lesional skin and nonlesionsal skin. AIMS: This study was to investigate correlation in the composition of SSL and different grades in order to understand the tendency of SSL alterations in this disease for successful acn

Global and gene-specific DNA methylation alterations in the adolescent amygdala and hippocampus in an animal model of caregiver maltreatment.

Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation are part of an emerging story on how early-life experiences can alter behavioral trajectories and lead to the development of disease and psychological disorders. Previous work from our laboratory has demonstrated alterations in methylation of DNA associated with the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (bdnf) gene within the amygdala and hippocampus of infant and adult rats that were repeatedly exposed to caregiver maltreatment outside the home cage during their first week of life. In the current study we examine changes in global levels of DNA methyl

Pathways to empowerment of adolescent mothers: a policy-oriented approach for improving postpartum self-efficacy and health service access within Iran's health system.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent motherhood is a complex public health and social challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where cultural norms and policy frameworks intersect. Teen mothers often enter parenthood without adequate emotional readiness, social support, or access to youth-friendly healthcare. Self-efficacy, defined as an individual's belief in their ability to manage and succeed in specific tasks, is crucial for empowering adolescent mothers to navigate postpartum challenges, improve parenting outcomes, and maintain mental well-being. In Iran, existing adolescent and mate

Neural, cognitive and psychopathological signatures of a prosocial or delinquent peer environment during early adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period for brain development, yet the impact of peer environments on brain structure, cognition, and psychopathology remains poorly understood. Here, we capitalized on data from 7806 adolescents (age = 12.02 ± 0.67) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, to determine associations between two distinct peer environments (proportion of prosocial or delinquent friends) and the structural and functional architecture of the brain, cognition, as well as behavioral and emotional dysregulation. A higher proportion of prosocial friends was associated with
