From a single alkene to two different alkenes! An iron-catalyzed four-component reaction involving an aldehyde, two different alkenes and TMSN3 is developed to assemble these four reactants in an orderly fashion based on the inherent nucleophilic/electrophilic reaction activity of the radicals and alkenes via a double radical addition, providing various multifunctional compounds containing an azido group and two carbonyl groups.

The protocol of micro-flow nucleophilic pentafluoroethylation using pentafluoroethane (HC2F5, HFC-125), a nontoxic, inexpensive, and commercially available greenhouse gas, is described. The micro-flow pentafluoroethylation by HFC-125 proceeded smoothly at room temperature or at -10 °C in DMF or toluene in the presence of a potassium base, namely, t-BuOK or KHMDS. A broad range of ketones, aldehydes, and chalcones with various substituted benzene rings were successfully converted to the corresponding pentafluoroethyl carbinols instantly with good to high yields.

1-Substituted and 1,1-disubstituted tetrahydro-β-carbolines undergo sodium periodate oxidative ring expansion in the presence of formaldehyde and other aldehydes to form 5,6-dihydro-7H-1,4-methanobenzo[e][1,4]diazonine-2,7(3H)-diones in 30-81% yield. In most cases, the reaction to form this new 6/8/5-tricyclic ring system proceeds with high diastereoselectivity. These benzannulated medium-ring keto imidazolidin-4-ones expand the menu of tetrahydro-β-carboline oxidation products.

Yellowing is the key processing technology of yellow tea, and environmental conditions have a significant impact on the yellowing process.
