Triatoma brasiliensis is considered the main vector of Chagas disease in the semiarid zones of North-eastern Brazil. In this work, we describe the spatial pattern of defecation in T. brasiliensis and the spatial relationship of faeces with the shelters of these bugs. Afterwards, we analyse the attraction response of T. brasiliensis larvae to potential odour cues present in their dry faeces, to substances present in their cuticule (footprints) and to the dry faeces of Triatoma pseudomaculata. We show that faecal spots are deposited in a larger density inside the shelter than in the remaining ar

BACKGROUND: Little is documented on key community-based One Health (OH) approach implementation, pro-activeness and effectiveness of interactions and strategies against Mpox outbreak public health emergency in international concern (PHEIC) in various African countries in order to stamp out the persisting Mpox outbreak threat and burden. Prioritizing critical community-based interventions and lessons learned from previous COVID-19, Mpox, Ebola, COVID-19, Rift Valley Fever and Marburg virus outbreaks revealed critical shortcomings in funding, surveillance, and community engagement that plague pu

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global public health concern affecting animals, humans, and the environment. Given its ubiquity, Escherichia coli may play a key role in the dissemination of AMR across these domains. Peri-urban regions where urban and rural systems intersect present unique challenges for controlling AMR. Despite this, limited data are available on AMR dissemination across the One Health continuum in peri-urban settings such as the Fraser Valley region of Canada. This study adopted a One Health approach to assess associations in AMR traits between E. coli

As a tropical country, Colombia hosts a wide range of arthropods that can act as vectors of disease-causing pathogens, particularly those carrying hemopathogens. Ticks play a crucial role in the transmission of zoonotic pathogens, impacting both human and veterinary health. The pathogen load of ticks from wildlife is of particular concern, as it can contribute to the spillover of infectious agents to domestic animals and humans, highlighting the need for surveillance and control strategies to mitigate emerging tick-borne diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the presence of microo

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans from infected animals. During May-June 2017, three persons with probable cutaneous anthrax were reported in Arua District, Uganda; one died. All had recently handled carcasses of livestock that died suddenly and a skin lesion from a deceased person tested positive by PCR for Bacillus anthracis. During July, a bull in the same community died suddenly and the blood sample tested positive by PCR for Bacillus anthracis. The aim of this investigation was to establish the scope of the problem, identify exposures associated w

The anaerobic gut fungi (AGF) inhabit the alimentary tracts of herbivores. In contrast to placental mammals, information regarding the identity, diversity, and community structure of AGF in marsupials is extremely sparse. Here, we characterized AGF communities in 61 fecal samples from 10 marsupial species belonging to four families in the order Diprotodontia: Vombatidae (wombats), Phascolarctidae (koalas), Phalangeridae (possums), and Macropodidae (kangaroos, wallabies, and pademelons). An amplicon-based diversity survey using the D2 region of the large ribosomal subunit as a phylogenetic mark

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes can be isolated from both symptomatic and asymptomatic cats, yet the role of skin commensals in modulating disease expression remains unclear. This study investigates whether microbial skin communities influence the clinical presentation (symptomatic or asymptomatic) of dermatophyte infection in Persian cats.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: We hypothesised that the fungal and bacterial skin microbiota differ between Persian cats with and without clinical signs of dermatophytosis. The objectives of this study were to compare the fungal and bacterial skin microbiota among healt

Background/Objectives: Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (dEDS) is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in ADAMTS2, which encodes the primary N-proteinase responsible for fibrillar procollagen processing. Although defective procollagen cleavage is the defining molecular feature of dEDS, how ADAMTS2 deficiency disrupts extracellular matrix (ECM) organization and tissue integrity remains incompletely understood. Here we characterized the structural, molecular, and cellular consequences of a knock-in Adamts2 mouse model harboring a dis

BACKGROUND: Animal development is frequently supported by microbial symbionts that contribute to host nutrition, metabolism, and physiology. While the functional importance of microbiomes in adult hosts is increasingly recognized, the role of symbiotic microbes during gametogenesis and embryogenesis remains poorly understood, particularly in early-diverging metazoans. Sponges represent an ideal system to investigate these processes due to their dense and diverse microbial communities. Here, we examined host-symbiont dynamics across the reproductive cycle of the marine sponge Halichondria panic

Current cat management approaches are outdated and ineffective, failing to reduce stray cat numbers or related complaints and negatively impacting the job satisfaction and mental health of veterinary, shelter, and municipal staff. We undertook a situational analysis prior to implementing a Community Cat Program based on free sterilization of owned, semi-owned, and unowned cats in the city of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. The study involved 343 residents in three suburbs in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia with high per capita intake of cats into the receiving shelter and municipal pound. We in

Despite extensive research, little is known about the composition of eukaryotic protists in environmental samples. This is due to low parasite concentrations, the complexity of parasite diversity, and a lack of suitable reference databases and standardized protocols. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study used 18S rRNA short amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing approaches to profile protozoan microbial communities as well as their functional pathways in treated and untreated wastewater samples collected from different regions of South Africa. Results demonstrated that protozoan divers

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-resistant pathogens pose high risks to human and animal health worldwide. In recent years, the role of gut microbiota as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in humans and animals has been increasingly investigated. However, the structure and function of the gut bacterial community, as well as the ARGs they carry in migratory birds remain unknown.
RESULTS: Here, we collected samples from migratory bird species and their associated environments and characterized their gut microbiomes and resistomes using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. We found that migrator

Many contaminants persist in the environment for decades or more, influencing ecosystem health. Environmental contamination with mercury (Hg) is a particular concern due to its ability to biomagnify in food webs and its lethal and sub-lethal effects in exposed organisms. Despite the known impacts of anthropogenic contamination, there remains a need for data on wildlife exposure to Hg and other contaminants, and the effects of exposure on wildlife health. The objectives of this study were to: 1) quantify differences in concentrations of mercury and other trace elements among three sympatric sem

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are steadily becoming part of routine practice in fragrance safety assessment rather than remaining research curiosities. This manuscript describes how the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) currently applies these methods and identifies where they are most likely to expand. It includes current applications across all the endpoints, including read-across and structural profiling for skin sensitization, genotoxicity, and repeated-dose and reproductive toxicity; metabolism prediction with simulators such as TIMES; inhalation d

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasingly recognised as a systemic disorder associated with gut dysbiosis and impaired gutlung communication. COPD-associated gut dysbiosis suggests potential bidirectional interactions between the gut and lung, which may be mediated by circulating immune cells, gut microbiota-derived metabolites and systemic inflammatory mediators. Emerging evidence suggests that exercise may improve COPD-related symptoms and quality of life not only through direct cardiopulmonary adaptations but also by reshaping gut microbiota composition and metabolic func

The human microbiota encompasses diverse microbial communities inhabiting the gut, oral cavity, skin, respiratory tract, and urogenital system, each contributing uniquely to host physiology and health. While the gut microbiota has been extensively studied in the context of brain development and behavior through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, emerging evidence highlights that non-gut microbial ecosystems also shape neuroimmune processes and neurological outcomes. However, evidence supporting non-gut microbiota-brain interactions remains heterogeneous and is often indirect, with causal relations

Female reproductive tract (FRT) disorders such as maternal conditions and gynecological cancers represent a significant global health burden. However, women's health, and particularly locally acting therapies targeting the FRT, has historically been underprioritized in drug development and translational research. Developing safe and effective therapies requires a clear understanding of drug transport across FRT barriers. Conventional in vitro culture systems and animal studies fail to recapitulate the physiological complexity of the human FRT, including stratified mucosal architecture, functio

Here, we report a microfluidic dermal fibroblast-macrophage co-culture on-chip that directly links macrophage-driven inflammatory signalling to dermal barrier function within a three-dimensional collagen microenvironment. The platform integrates spatially compartmentalized co-culture of dermal fibroblasts and macrophages separated by a micropillar-confined collagen type I matrix, enabling non-contact paracrine communication while preserving extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture. Upon lipopolysaccharide stimulation, the system rapidly reproduced of acute inflammation within 6 h and 12 h, incl

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common fetal anomaly worldwide. The definite etiology of most CHD is not recognized. A direct genetic etiology is considered for a minority of patients. Most etiologies are attributed to epigenetic and environmental factors. Placental malformation is an overlooked cause of CHD that has recently received attention. This narrative review presents a hypothesis based on clinical reports and animal studies. The placenta and fetal heart have concomitant developmental regulatory pathways, and their diseases have a two-way communication. Placental insufficien

The Tibetan sheep is an ideal model animal for investigating adaptations to hypoxia and an important livestock species; however, the reproductive mechanisms that characterize its adaptive responses in extreme environments remain poorly understood. In this study, we employ single-nucleus RNA sequencing to characterize the transcriptomic landscape of the Tibetan sheep testis at four key developmental stages: newborn, pre-sexual maturity, and post-sexual maturity to adulthood. We constructed a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas and identified two distinct subtypes of spermatogonial stem cells (S
