BACKGROUND: Low frequency linear (translational) oscillation is an important stimulus in provoking motion sickness in a variety of modes of transport.
HYPOTHESIS: Lower frequencies of horizontal linear oscillation would be more nauseogenic. The somatogravic illusion (SGI) would be affected by frequency.
METHODS: Subjects (n = 12) were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at three different frequencies (0.205 Hz, 0.350 Hz, 0.500 Hz) at one week intervals, with order randomized between subjects. Subjects were seated in the upright position, with motion through the X head bo

BACKGROUND: Regan and Price (1994) investigated the frequency of occurrence and severity of side-effects of using an immersion virtual reality system in 150 subjects: 61% of the subjects reported symptoms of malaise at some point during a 20-min immersion and 10-min post-immersion period. This paper describes a double-blind placebo-controlled study that investigated whether 300 microgram of hyoscine/scopolamine hydrobromide administered to subjects prior to immersion in virtual reality was effective in reducing side-effects experienced during immersion.

BACKGROUND: Evidence in support of the sensory conflict hypothesis for space motion sickness (SMS) is still needed.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that sensory conflict and recovery processes should be demonstrated in intact fish during initial days of microgravity exposure, as a disturbance and restoration of the dorsal light response (DLR; a functional model of visual-graviceptor interaction), respectively. We also expected that this would be true in an otolith-removed fish if it had been fully compensated for dysfunction before the exposure.
METHODS: The DLR of carp (Cyprinus carpio) was exa

METHOD AND RESULTS: Subjects underwent cross-coupled rotation of the head (i.e., Coriolis stimuli) during which the upper body was tilted from side to side during horizontal rotation of the whole body about the Earth-vertical axis. In Experiment 1, the angle between the two axes of cross-coupled rotation was changed to vary the magnitude of gyroscopic angular acceleration without wide variations in Coriolis linear acceleration. The severity of nausea evoked by cross-coupled rotation stimuli varied relative to the magnitude of gyroscopic angular acceleration. It is noteworthy that nausea was no

BACKGROUND: The relative importance of visual and vestibular information in the etiology of motion sickness (MS) is not well understood, but these factors can be manipulated by inducing Coriolis and pseudo-Coriolis effects in experimental subjects.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that visual and vestibular information are equivalent in producing MS. The experiments reported here aim, in part, to examine the relative influence of Coriolis and pseudo-Coriolis effects in inducing MS.
METHODS: We induced MS symptoms by combinations of whole body rotation and tilt, and environment rotation and tilt,

BACKGROUND: A new nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protective garment has been designed for use in hot environments. This NBC battle dress uniform (NBC-BDU) is intended to be worn over the skin or, at most, over underwear and an undershirt. It is unclear whether the documented reductions in heat strain associated with wearing this clothing configuration represent simply the removal of the combat clothing layer normally worn underneath a NBC protective overgarment or an improved heat transfer through the new NBC-BDU.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that the removal of the combat clothing

BACKGROUND: With the potential for higher aircraft and cabin altitudes, the way in which altitude decompression sickness (DCS) presents continues to be of interest. The majority of previous papers on the symptomatology of DCS are retrospective reviews of patients treated hours or days post-exposure. The initial presentation while still at altitude is the form of DCS that aircrew must be able to recognize in order to respond correctly. This paper reports the initial manifestations of DCS that occurred during a series of prospective hypobaric chamber studies. These studies had been specifically

METHOD: We examined the thermoregulatory and hemodynamic responses of 12 miniswine (31 +/- 3.9 kg) during 25-30 min of treadmill exercise (5.4 km.h-1, 5% grade) under cool (10 degrees C), moderate (20 degrees C) and warm (30 degrees C) ambient temperature (Ta) conditions.
RESULTS: Within 15-20 min of exercise at Ta = 30 degrees C, the miniswine demonstrated significant hyperventilation, hypersalivation, and unsteady gait. Exercise-heat endurance time (T) at Ta = 30 degrees C decreased by 35% and 40% in comparison to T at Ta = 20 degrees C and 10 degrees C, respectively. This resulted from a s

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the in-flight muscular strain of fighter pilots.
HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to measure fighter pilots' mean and peak muscular strain during aerial combat maneuvering exercises. The results obtained were compared against existing ergonomic recommendations.
METHODS: Six pilots volunteered to serve as test subjects. Their mean age (+/- SD) was 28.5 +/- 5 yr, height 181 +/- 7 cm, and weight 75 +/- 10 kg. They performed one-to-one dog-fight exercises in the morning and in the afternoon. During the flights, the pilots' electromyographic activity (EM

Continuing advances in the performance of new fighter aircraft have engendered requirements for more sophisticated protective clothing and life support systems. A major goal is prevention of acceleration-induced loss of consciousness. The USAF's Advanced Technology Enhanced Design G-Ensemble (COMBAT EDGE) increases acceleration tolerance by providing positive pressure to the oxygen mask; the work of pressure breathing is reduced by adding a counter-pressure bladder over the chest. However, the addition of impermeable layers over the chest reduces the area available for evaporation of sweat. Th

This report details the findings of 1476 Canadian Forces pilot candidates screened with echocardiography and Doppler. All candidates had previously been medically screened at a recruiting center. We found 115 (7.8%) to have disqualifying findings. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) was the most common (4.8%). Other abnormalities included aortic regurgitation (2.3%), bicuspid aortic valve (0.9%), left ventricular hypertrophy, asymmetric septal hypertrophy, and atrial septal defect (< 0.05%). Of the 71 candidates found to have mitral valve prolapse, 40 had positive clinical findings on careful ausculta

Gas microbubbles were detected in the left ventricle of a supine subject being screened for an atrial septal defect as a participant of a hypobaric decompression study. This determination was made using the saline echocontrast procedure. We found provocation by a Valsalva maneuver not to be necessary in this individual for right-to-left passage of contrast microbubbles into the left heart and middle cerebral artery. When this same individual underwent hypobaric decompression to a simulated altitude of 21,000 ft, numerous gas microbubbles were detected in the right heart, but no gas bubbles wer

This descriptive, correlational study examined meal frequencies and dietary intakes as they related to airsickness in a population of novice civilian pilots. Food and nutrient intakes and dietary patterns of pilots prior to flight were measured for association with airsickness. A 24-h dietary recall was used in recording dietary intake and meal frequencies during a typical flight day. Correlation analysis was used to determine relationships between dietary intake and airsickness. Of the female pilots, 75% experienced airsickness; and 24% of the male pilots experienced it. Female pilots' mean 2

The aim of this study was to determine whether varying the predetermined malaise level at which provocative motion challenges were stopped would affect the habituation rate. At the rate of 2 per day, 21 motion challenges were delivered, stopping either at initial symptoms or at moderate nausea, on a cross-over design randomized between subjects (n = 20). The cross-coupled motion challenge had an incrementing profile of rotational velocity from 2-90 degrees.s-1 in steps of 2 degrees.s-1 every 30 s, with 8 head movements per 30 s, of approximately 45 degrees. The number of head movements tolerat

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of P6 acupressure on nausea associated with visually-induced motion sickness.
METHOD: There were 64 subjects randomly divided into 4 groups: P6 acupressure, dummy-point acupressure, sham P6 acupressure, and control. Each subject sat in an optokinetic drum for a 12-min baseline and 12-min drum rotation period. Subjects' electrogastrograms (EGG's) and subjective symptoms of motion sickness were obtained.
RESULTS: The results indicated that the subjects in the P6 acupressure group reported significantly less nausea [F(3,60) = 8.

BACKGROUND: Inverted immersion (II) offers a unique opportunity to swing the orientation of the gravity vector 180 degrees from its usual configuration with vestibular end organs. During II, extrathoracic fluid dynamics are identical to those of upright immersion (UI). II exposes individuals to a novel gravitoinertial environment and, therefore, should produce motion sickness (MS).
HYPOTHESIS: II is more provocative of signs and symptoms of MS than UI.
METHODS: Nine subjects were exposed once to II and UI. Conventional SCUBA gear was worn. In II, the subject wore a wetsuit which provided 5-7

Motion sickness experiences were obtained from participants in a 9 month, round the world yacht race. Race participants completed questionnaires on their motion sickness experience 1 week prior to the start of the race, during the race, and following the race. Yacht headings, sea states, and wind directions were recorded throughout the race. Illness and the occurrence of vomiting were related to the duration at sea and yacht encounter directions relative to the prevailing wind. Individual crewmember characteristics, the use of anti-motion sickness drugs, activity while at sea, and after-effect

BACKGROUND: Previous research in our laboratory has shown that symptoms of motion sickness are accompanied by the loss of normal 3 cpm activity and the development of tachyarrhythmia in the electrogastrogram (EGG).
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that dimenhydrinate would prevent the development of gastric tachyarrhythmia and reduce symptoms of motion sickness.
METHODS: Twenty health volunteers were tested in a counter-balanced, within-subject, double-blind design. Subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum to induce vection after receiving either dimenhydrinate (100 mg) or a placebo o
