Glenohumeral joint tuberculosis that mimics frozen shoulder: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of osteoarticular tuberculosis is increasing, glenohumeral joint tuberculosis is rare and often misdiagnosed in its early stages. Our objective was to study the incidence of the initial misdiagnosis as frozen shoulder and the duration of the prediagnostic period among patients with glenohumeral joint tuberculosis. METHODS: The clinical records of 21 patients with tuberculosis of the shoulder joint were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 16 patients with glenohumeral joint tuberculosis, 14 (87.5%) were initially diagnosed as having frozen shoulder

Osteoarticular complications of brucellosis in an Atlantic area of Spain.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency and clinical manifestations of osteoarticular brucellosis in an Atlantic area of Spain. METHODS: The case histories of all patients older than 14 years of age with active brucellosis diagnosed at the Hospital Xeral-Calde, Lugo, Spain, between October 1979 and October 1997 were reviewed. Diagnosis of brucellosis was by one of the following criteria: isolation of brucella species in blood or other fluids or tissue samples; or a clinical picture compatible with brucellosis in the presence of raised titers of specific antibodies by seroagglutination or Rose-Beng

Intra-articular pressure, elastance and range of motion in healthy and injured racehorse metacarpophalangeal joints.

The objective of this study was to determine if intraarticular pressure, elastance of the soft tissue forming the dorsal pouch, and range of motion in flexion measurements are significantly different in Thoroughbred metacarpophalangeal joints with clinical evidence of idiopathic synovitis, primary synovitis, synovitis/capsulitis, or osteoarthritis relative to clinically normal joints. Forty-two metacarpophalangeal joints, in 25 active or retired Thoroughbred racehorses, were categorised by palpation and visual inspection of the palmar pouch into one of 4 increasing grades of distention. Intra-

Acute knee injury. How to determine if the knee is stable.

Knee injuries are common in patients of all ages. A detailed history concerning the mechanism of injury and symptoms is helpful in establishing a tentative diagnosis, and the physical examination can easily provide confirmation. X-ray films occasionally are helpful, but stress views and arthrograms should not be relied on for definitive diagnosis. Arthroscopy may be required for definitive evaluation of internal derangement of the knee and can be used therapeutically in meniscal injuries and other problems. Proper rehabilitation is mandatory for a good outcome; therefore, physical therapy is e

Driving Safety After Hip Injections: Brake Response Times.

AIMS: Hip inflammatory conditions such as trochanteric bursitis and osteoarthritis significantly impact functional ability. While hip arthroplasty is common, hip injections are a less invasive pain management option for these conditions. Concerns about driving safety post-injection have led to guidelines advising against driving for 12-24 hours. This study assesses brake response time (BRT) before and after hip injections to determine driving fitness. METHODS: In this prospective study, 55 patients scheduled for steroid and local anaesthetic hip injections at a National Orthopaedic Hospital w…

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome in Patients with Degenerative Lumbar Spine Disease: Clinical Findings and Short-Term Outcomes in a Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) may coexist with lumbar degenerative spine disease (LDSD) and complicate pain attribution. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the observed frequency and short-term clinical course of GTPS in a selected tertiary-care LDSD population and explored factors associated with a previous surgical recommendation. Among 153 consecutive eligible patients with clinically compatible and MRI-documented LDSD, 63 had clinical suspicion of GTPS; all 63 underwent hip MRI, demonstrated findings consistent with trochanteric bursitis, received ul…

Spinopelvic parameters in greater trochanteric pain syndrome: a retrospective case-control study.

PURPOSE: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a condition resulting in lateral hip pain, most commonly caused by tendinosis or tear of the gluteus medius and minimus tendons, and greater trochanteric bursitis. Our aim was to assess pelvic parameters and proximal femoral anatomy in patients suffering from surgical-stage GTPS compared with a control group. METHODS: This retrospective, case-control study assessed 43 patients suffering from GTPS, matched according to age, gender, body mass index and level of sport and physical activity to 43 control patients, between 2013 and 2018. Pelvic…
