Among 38 cases of hypoparathyroidism, 32 patients were found to have hypocalcemic cataract. The morphology and mechanism of cataract formation were studied by clinical observation and biochemical calcium determinations, which indicated that the development of hypocalcemic cataract was related to the calcium level in blood but not to the duration of disease. The results suggest that early diagnosis and treatment of hypocalcemia may be useful in controlling the development of cataract. A case is presented in which calcium hydroxide was used in endodontic treatment of external root resorption in a tooth with a necrotic pulp, during active orthodontic movement. A calcified deposit formed, filling a defect, and the tooth was subsequently obturated with gutta-percha. Thus, both types of therapy--endodontic and orthodontic--were performed simultaneously.

Previous work in this laboratory has shown that supplemental dietary calcium using milk as the source can lower blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels. Attempting to circumvent lactose intolerance, a 6-month crossover study of blood pressure and serum lipids in 50 free-living volunteers was done comparing 1,150 mg/day of supplemental calcium via yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk to 32 oz/day of orange juice. Twelve healthy subjects received a single oral dose of theophylline, 5 mg/kg alone, and after 7 days of oral verapamil, 120 mg every 8 hours, diltiazem, 90 mg every 8 hours, and nifedipine, 20 mg every 8 hours, in randomized crossover fashion. The biochemical effects of a calcium supplement (1 g/d) given for between 6 and 36 months were studied in 20 postmenopausal osteoporotic women who had normal calcium absorption.
