Candidemia and invasive candidiasis remain significant causes of late-onset sepsis and mortality in very-low-birth-weight infants, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This narrative review synthesizes studies published between 2008 and 2025 in Latin America, addressing epidemiology, species distribution, antifungal susceptibility patterns, risk factors, therapeutic approaches, and clinical outcomes, with international comparisons. Accordingly, we present a qualitative narrative synthesis (see Methods) rather than a formal year-over-year temporal trend quantification. Globally, five

Echinocandins are the preferred agents for treating invasive candidiasis; however, rising resistance in Candida species poses a significant challenge for patient care. This study aimed to improve the efficacy of echinocandins against clinical Candida isolates by enhancing their noncanonical membrane activity. The mechanisms of action of anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin on lipid membranes were investigated using a range of biophysical methods and molecular dynamics approaches. Antifungal activity was assessed using a panel of clinical Candida isolates. The results indicated that echin

Candida infections are among the most common fungal diseases globally, with candidemia posing a serious threat in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. In Portugal, though Candida albicans is the predominant species identified, other species such as Candida parapsilosis and Nakaseomyces glabratus (formerly Candida glabrata) are increasingly detected, particularly in intensive care units and patients with invasive devices. Emerging multidrug-resistant strains, notably Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris), have raised significant concern, with the first Portuguese cases reported rec

Candida albicans, responsible for approximately 70% of all Candida infections, is a leading cause of invasive candidiasis and poses a significant global health threat. With the emergence of drug-resistant strains, mortality rates have reached a staggering 63.6% in severe cases, complicating treatment options and demanding the discovery of novel therapeutic targets. To address this pressing need, using a unique multidisciplinary approach, we attempted to identify some the critical metabolic pathways that can be targeted to modulate the virulence of CAL. Condition-specific genome-scale metabolic

Candida albicans is one of the most common human fungal pathogens. C. albicans infections can range from superficial conditions, such as oral and vaginal candidiasis, to more severe, invasive infections, which can lead to life-threatening systemic diseases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. In this study, the oxidative effects of C. albicans infection on the non-vertebrate model Galleria mellonella, were investigated. Levels of oxidative damage indicators, lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde (MDA), and antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione S-transferase (GST), superox

Gastric perforation is a life-threatening surgical emergency most commonly caused by peptic ulcer disease. Fungal involvement, particularly by Candida albicans, is exceedingly rare but associated with poorer outcomes than bacterial peritonitis. We report a case of a 52-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with acute abdominal pain and hemodynamic instability. Emergency laparotomy revealed a 5 mm perforation on the anterior gastric wall, which was repaired primarily. Postoperatively, the patient developed persistent sepsis, acute kidney injury, and hypoalbuminemia. Two weeks

Biofilm eradication remains a significant challenge in clinical practice and contributes substantially to healthcare costs. Medical devices serve as a common substrate for biofilm formation and are implicated in a considerable proportion of invasive candidiasis cases. Rezafungin, a next-generation echinocandin, exhibits broad-spectrum fungicidal activity against Candida spp. and in vitro studies have confirmed its efficacy against Candida biofilms. A literature review up to July 2025 was conducted, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and gray literature, focusing on the real-world use of

Aspergillus fumigatus is an environmental mold that forms ubiquitous airborne conidia and can cause life-threatening infections in immunocompromised individuals. Invasive aspergillosis occurs in patients with quantitative or qualitative neutrophil defects, who often receive systemic antibiotics to prevent or manage bacterial infections. Antibiotic-induced bacterial dysbiosis has been linked to impaired neutrophil bactericidal activity and to intestinal commensal bacteria escape during systemic candidiasis, though it remains unclear whether receipt of antibacterial antibiotics impairs neutrophi

Infections caused by yeasts of the genus Candida are likely to occur not only in immunocompromised patients but also in healthy individuals, leading to infections of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and respiratory tract. Due to the rapid increase in the frequency of reported Candidiasis cases in recent years, diagnostic research has become the subject of many studies, and therefore, we developed a polyclonal aptamer library-based fluorometric assay with high specificity and affinity towards Candida spec. to quantify the pathogens in clinical samples with high sensitivity. We recentl

Candida spp. are the fourth leading cause of bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients and the most common cause of invasive fungal infection. No vaccine against Candida spp. or other fungal pathogens of humans is available. We recently discovered the Blastomyces Dectin-2 ligand endoglucanase 2 that harbors antigenic and adjuvant functions and can function as a protective vaccine against that fungus. We also reported that the adjuvant activity, which is mediated by O-mannans decorating the C terminus of Blastomyces Dectin-2 ligand endoglucanase 2, can augment peptide Ag-induced vaccine i

Candida parapsilosis and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa are opportunistic pathogens affecting mostly immunocompromised hosts. Both species have emerged as causes of invasive candidiasis and sepsis respectively. Here we present high-quality long-read genome assemblies for a strain of C. parapsilosis isolated from human breast milk, with multiple predicted signatures consistent with Candida Drug Resistance CDR1/CDR2 and Multi Drug Resistance MDR1-type genes, also for an environmental strain of R. mucilaginosa with multiresistance to azole antifungals. The genome sequencing was performed using the R9.4

Antibiotic prophylaxis sets the stage for an intestinal bloom of Candida albicans , which can progress to invasive candidiasis in patients with hematologic malignancies. Commensal bacteria can reestablish microbiota-mediated colonization resistance after completion of antibiotic therapy, but they cannot engraft during antibiotic prophylaxis. Here we use a mouse model to provide a proof of concept for an alternative approach, which replaces commensal bacteria functionally with drugs to restore colonization resistance against C. albicans . Streptomycin treatment, which depletes Clostridia from t

Coronavirus infectious disease-19 caused by Severe acute respiratory distress syndrome-coronavirus-2 has emerged to be an emergency global health crisis for more than a year. And, as the disease has spread, a number of new clinical features have been observed in these patients. Immunosuppression caused by this disease results in an exacerbation of pre-existing infections. While corticosteroids are considered a life-saving therapeutic intervention for this pandemic, they have proved to be a double-edged sword and their indiscriminate use has produced some deleterious results. Recently, in the b

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has caused a devastating pandemic lasting for more than a year. To date, 47 million individuals have been infected and 1.2 million individuals have died worldwide. Some of the most important coinfections in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are opportunistic invasive fungal infections (OIFIs), which are sometimes not rapidly diagnosed and are often diagnosed after death. Aspergillosis and candidiasis are the most prevalent OIFIs in patients with COVID-19. Mycormycosis, cryptococcosis, and other fungal diseases have also been docum

The oral cavity is colonized by several species of microorganisms that can cause dental caries, periodontal diseases, candidiasis, endodontic infections, and, among other diseases related to the dental field. Conventional treatment consists of mechanical removal associated with systemic administration of antimicrobials, which can cause various side effects and microbial resistance. In this context, alternative therapies have been developed, including Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT). For the improvement of therapy, the implementation of nanotechnology is very important to optimize the

A paradigm shift of candidiasis from Candida albicans to non-albicans Candida species has fundamentally increased with the advent of C. auris. C. auris, despite being a newly emerged multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, is associated with severe invasive infections and outbreaks with high mortality rates. Initially reported from Japan in 2009, C. auris have now been found in different countries on all the continents except Antarctica. Due to its capability of nosocomial transmission and forming adherent biofilms on clinically important substrates, a high number of related hospital outbreaks ha

The human fungal pathogen Candida glabrata appears to utilise unique stealth, evasion and persistence strategies in subverting the onslaught of host immune response during systemic infection. However, macrophages actively deprive the intracellular fungal pathogen of glucose, and therefore alternative carbon sources probably support the growth and survival of engulfed C. glabrata. The present study aimed to investigate the role of the glyoxylate cycle gene ICL1 in alternative carbon utilisation and its importance for the virulence of C. glabrata. The data showed that disruption of ICL1 rendered

Epidemiological data about mycotic diseases are limited in Peru and estimation of the fungal burden has not been previously attempted. Data were obtained from the Peruvian National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, UNAIDS and from the Ministry of Health's publications. We also searched the bibliography for Peruvian data on mycotic diseases, asthma, COPD, cancer and transplants. Incidence or prevalence for each fungal disease were estimated in specific populations at risk. The Peruvian population for 2015 was 31,151,543. In 2014, the estimated number of HIV/AIDS and pulmonary tuberculosi
