Circumstances of bat encounters and knowledge of rabies among Minnesota residents submitting bats for rabies testing.

Minnesota residents who submitted a bat to the Minnesota Department of Health for rabies testing in 2003 were surveyed by telephone regarding the circumstances of the bat encounter and their knowledge of bats and rabies. Of 442 bats submitted for testing, 12 (3%) tested positive for rabies, and 410 (93%) tested negative; 17 (4%) bats were unsuitable for testing, and three (1%) had equivocal results. A case-control study found that rabid bats were more likely than non-rabid bats to be found in September, found outside, found in a wooded area, unable to fly, acting ill, or acting aggressively. R

Experimental rabies infection in haematophagous bats Desmodus rotundus.

In order to determine the susceptibility and serum neutralizing antibody response of Desmodus rotundus to rabies virus, bats were inoculated with a virus isolated from a naturally infected haematophagous bat. Bats were divided into four groups of 10 animals each. Dilutions of rabies virus containing 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000 MICLD50 (lethal dose 50% for mice inoculated by the intracerebral route) were administrated in the pectoral muscle. The presence of rabies virus was detected in brain and salivary glands by fluorescent antibody, mouse inoculation and RT-PCR. The observed mortality for

Vectors of Chikungunya virus in Senegal: current data and transmission cycles.

Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to human beings by Aedes genus mosquitoes. From 1972 to 1986 in Kédougou, Senegal, 178 Chikungunya virus strains were isolated from gallery forest mosquitoes, with most of them isolated from Ae. furcifer-taylori (129 strains), Ae. luteocephalus (27 strains), and Ae. dalzieli (12 strains). The characteristics of the sylvatic transmission cycle are a circulation periodicity with silent intervals that last approximately three years. Few epidemics of this disease have been reported in Senegal. The most recent one occurred in 1996 in Kaffrine where t

A search for Ebola virus in animals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon: ecologic, virologic, and serologic surveys, 1979-1980. Ebola Virus Study Teams.

More than 30 years after the first outbreak of Marburg virus disease in Germany and Yugoslavia and 20 years after Ebola hemorrhagic fever first occurred in central Africa, the natural history of filoviruses remains unknown. In 1979 and 1980, animals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon were collected during the dry season near the site of the 1976 Ebola hemorrhagic fever epidemic. The study objectives were to identify local animals and search for evidence of Ebola virus in their tissues. A total of 1664 animals representing 117 species was collected, including >400 bats and 500

Non-rabies Lyssavirus human encephalitis from fruit bats: Australian bat Lyssavirus (pteropid Lyssavirus) infection.

A 39-year-old woman died of encephalitis a few weeks after being scratched by fruit bats. Autopsy disclosed meningoencephalomyelitis, and revealed neuronal intracytoplasmic inclusions which had similarities to Negri bodies of rabies. Laboratory investigations detected a Lyssavirus type previously identified only in fruit bats. This appears to be the first human case of encephalitis due to this Lyssavirus type.

Plaque variant analysis of Entebbe bat virus reveals an envelope residue governing virus release from vertebrate cells.

Entebbe bat virus (ENTV) is a bat-associated orthoflavivirus with no known arthropod vector. The ENTV isolate UGA125 produces plaques of distinct sizes, designated large (L) and small (S), suggesting underlying genetic heterogeneity. While such variation may influence viral phenotypes, biological differences beyond plaque morphology remain uncharacterized. In this study, we identified single-amino-acid substitutions in the envelope (E) responsible for each phenotype. Growth curve analysis using infectious-clone-derived viruses revealed that rL (H86N) had similar kinetics relative to rWT, where

Six new Bartonella species isolated from bats in Senegal.

Bartonella species are host-associated Pseudomonadota causing various human diseases and a broad range of clinical manifestations. These bacteria are primarily maintained in animal reservoirs and transmitted to humans through direct contact or via haematophagous vectors. In this study, six novel Bartonella species - Bartonella numerosa sp. nov. strain CB178T (=CSUR B1106T=JCM 36790T), Bartonella vaga sp. nov. strain CB169T (=CSUR B1103T=JCM 36788T), Bartonella occidentalis sp. nov. strain CB175T (=CSUR B1104T=JCM 36789T), Bartonella rhinolophi sp. nov. strain CB74T (=CSUR B1102T=JCM 36787T), B

SARS-CoV-2 nsp1 mediates broad inhibition of translation in mammals.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) non-structural protein 1 (nsp1) promotes innate immune evasion by inhibiting host translation in human cells. However, the role of nsp1 in other host species remains elusive, especially in bats-natural reservoirs of sarbecoviruses with a markedly different innate immune system than humans. We reveal that nsp1 potently inhibits translation in Rhinolophus lepidus bat cells, which belong to the same genus as known sarbecovirus reservoir hosts. We determined a cryoelectron microscopy structure of nsp1 bound to the R. lepidus 40S ribosoma

Inhibiting viral entry of bat-derived coronavirus HKU5-CoV-2: Targeting spike protein S1 subunit with FDA-approved antivirals-A structural dynamics and energetics study.

The ongoing risk of zoonotic transmission from bat-derived coronaviruses underscores the urgent need for broad-spectrum antiviral strategies. In this study, we investigate the potential of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved antiviral drugs to inhibit the S1 C-terminal domain of the spike protein from HKU5-CoV-2, a Merbecovirus closely related to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). A structure-based virtual screening approach was employed, followed by 3000 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and binding free energy estimation using MM-PBSA analysis. Among the sc

Molecular characterization and prevalence assessment of Durettenema sp. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) in the great leaf-nosed bats (Hipposideros armiger) in South China.

The viruses associated with bats have generated significant concern; however, there is limited knowledge regarding the endoparasites that affect these mammals. This study involved the collection of seven nematode specimens (three males and four females) from the intestines of Hipposideros armiger in Shaoguan City, Guangdong, China. Next-generation sequencing was employed to obtain the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome, which was determined to be 14,130 base pairs in length. The mitochondrial genome comprised 12 protein-coding genes, 21 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and an AT-rich non-coding region.

SARS-CoV-2 Spike displays multiple adaptive changes in addition to the furin cleavage site.

Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 from bat sarbecoviruses involved multiple changes in Spike in addition to insertion of the furin cleavage site (FCS). Analysis of the closely related Spike of BANAL-20-52 reveals key adaptations in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike beyond the FCS that occurred prior to the spillover of SARS-CoV-2's immediate progenitor to humans. Bat sarbecoviruses have enteric tropism and spread mostly by the gastrointestinal route. Their Spike proteins predominantly assume the locked form, which is able to resist the low pH of the bat gastrointestinal tract. Initial changes during the SARS-CoV-2 e

Genetic diversity of pathogenic Leptospira spp. harbored by bats in Japan.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira species. In Japan, human and canine leptospirosis cases are reported annually. Although wild animals, including bats, are known to harbor pathogenic Leptospira spp., infection of bats in this region has never been explored. This study aimed to determine the presence of leptospires and their genetic diversity in five Japanese bat species. Kidney tissue and blood samples were collected from 115 bats captured in the Yamaguchi Prefecture and Hokkaido, Japan. Pathogenic Leptospira spp. were detected in the kidneys by rea

An inhibitor of leukotriene-A4 hydrolase from bat salivary glands facilitates virus infection.

SignificanceAn immunosuppressant protein (MTX), which facilitates virus infection by inhibiting leukotriene A4 hydrolase (LTA4H) to produce the lipid chemoattractant leukotriene B4 (LTB4), was identified and characterized from the submandibular salivary glands of the bat Myotis pilosus. To the best of our knowledge, this is a report of an endogenous LTA4H inhibitor in animals. MTX was highly concentrated in the bat salivary glands, suggesting a mechanism for the generation of immunological privilege and immune tolerance and providing evidence of viral shedding through oral secretions. Moreover

First report on the detection of Japanese encephalitis virus in fruit bats from India.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito borne viral zoonotic disease and JE virus (JEV) is responsible for causing several children deaths every year in India. Since 1978, cases of JE have been reported from Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh state annually. The knowledge on the role played by wildlife reservoirs in the sylvatic transmission and maintenance of JE virus remains limited. Bats are reservoir hosts for several emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens but their role in zoonotic cycle of JEV has not been elucidated yet. In Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, 52 fruit bats were fou

RTP4 Is a Potent IFN-Inducible Anti-flavivirus Effector Engaged in a Host-Virus Arms Race in Bats and Other Mammals.

Among mammals, bats are particularly rich in zoonotic viruses, including flaviviruses. Certain bat species can be productively yet asymptomatically infected with viruses that cause overt disease in other species. However, little is known about the antiviral effector repertoire in bats relative to other mammals. Here, we report the black flying fox receptor transporter protein 4 (RTP4) as a potent interferon (IFN)-inducible inhibitor of human pathogens in the Flaviviridae family, including Zika, West Nile, and hepatitis C viruses. Mechanistically, RTP4 associates with the flavivirus replicase,

Novel therapeutic approaches toward Hantaan virus and its clinical features' similarity with COVID-19.

Zoonotic virus spill over in human community has been an intensive area of viral pathogenesis and the outbreak of Hantaan virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV2) after late December 2019 caused a global threat. Hantaan virus is second to the COVID-19 outbreak in China with seven cases positive and one death. Both RNA viruses have opposite sense as in (-) for Hantaan virus and (+) for SARS CoV2 but have similarity in the pathogenesis and relevant clinical features including dry cough, high fever, shortness of breath, and SARS associated with pneumonia and certain r
